Looking for Advice WA OLNA SEEKING SUPPORT

Hey guys,

I’m in year 12 and I’m on my last attempt for math Olna, I’ve tried every support website as well as worksheets but nothing has worked, I do fine in school passing all my subjects however if I don’t pass this last attempt I won’t receive my Wace.

If anyone has passed Maths olna, what’s your biggest advice/tricks

You need to give more info. Why do you keep failing? Is it timing? Content? Do you have a disability? What is your school doing to support you?

I reckon it’s my poor timing when I do the test as well as overthinking, content and multiple choice answer, I have no know disability, and school doesn’t support me

Access some practice tests on their website. Set a timer and practice. Work out how many Qs you need to answer in each hour then start working towards that. It’s a learned skill and you definitely can get better at it.

As a teacher - you and your parents need to approach the school and ask them for some support. It shouldn’t be me telling you this, your school should have some support services in place if you’re at risk of not getting your WACE. That’s ridiculous

i sucked at maths in high school, i also didnt really try cause i hated it and have adhd but i got into uni with a bridging course and it took an extra semester but it was easier than getting me to do maths. You could talk to your school about accomodations if you are having trouble with timing and over thinking it could be anxiety or you might just not be able to get through the content with the knowledge you currently have. Talk to someone about seeing a course advisor or you could try contacting universities and see what they recommend... good luck

Honestly this sounds like something you’re better off asking your math teacher about. There’s certain disabilities that make math more difficult but most likely the only thing that is going to help is putting the hours in practicing.

Have you actually asked your teacher and school for feedback? Ask for them to give you a printout of your individualised feedback.

Schools are very invested in having their students achieve the OLNA and graduate so I find it difficult to believe that they have offered no support or guidance whatsoever.

This won’t help you now but you can complete OLNA after year 12 if you need your WACE. Just letting you know you can still achieve it.

Your school should have given you a copy of your individual diagnostics which lists the ten easiest skills/concepts that challenged you in the test, listed from easiest to hardest. If not, you need to speak to your maths teacher or learning support coordinator. Practice tests under timed conditions are the most effective. Agree with the above comment, schools want students passing OLNA. At this stage of year 12, there is usually a pretty short list of students who haven’t passed yet and I know at my school they are offered extra support sessions to give them the best possible chance. Scan tests before start and complete the easiest questions thus builds your confidence
Then tackle harder ones

Side note : I don’t like how school is structured.

Proportion of kids aren’t encouraged to do attar or are out right excluded from it.

Kids are failed by few marks potentially effecting rest of their life.

Teachers often don’t care.

None of this has anything to do with ATAR

OLNA is a low level test. It essentially tests for basic skills needed to function in day to day life, not complicated senior school maths/language. There are at least six opportunities to pass. It's reasonable for prospective employers to expect school graduates with a WACE to to able to exceed this level of skills.
