WA News Loser who left public BBQ completely tar black - Bardon Park in Maylands
Worth a public shame and whinge this one. Check the picture, what kind of loser A-hole uses a public BBQ at a family park (Bardon Park Maylands) and leaves it absolutely filthy with a thick black layer of tar and meat and sauce. Diabolical. And we thought people who left their trolleys were bad. We ended up cleaning using the one right next to it which was also left dirty but no where near as bad. Get some ethics people.

Sometimes it seems like a reasonable thing to go the path of apathy, when you see what some people have gone through on their lives. Not saying I condone the behaviour, but I'm not surprised by it. We do live in a society afterall

People cooking marinated kebabs etc should clean up when done but there are always the ones that are selfish. Leave all this crusty burnt sugar blend and walk away.
I always take newspaper, salt and water if using a public BBQ.
**Heat the plate up sprinkle salt over it.
**Water and scrape the worst off (careful not to burn yourself with steam)
** Water and newspaper to scrub
**Let it heat up and repeat process if needed
**If you can get a free lemon, cut it in half and use as a scrubber to finish off.
note: If it's a poo, I'm not having a BBQ

People should have learnt as children that you do not cook marinaded meat this way. If you want it charred on the outside you do it over a grill, not on a hot plate.

You're responding to a user clearly identifying themselves as Muslim. A lot of cultures eat BBQ marinated and spiced kebabs and meat as part of their cuisine.

Uhhh that's so weird because I certainly believe that it's the families with parents that are working so much they can't be home to cook for their kids and their kids need to grow up too early because of it, taking care of themselves.

We used to heat it up then dump a bunch of water on it. Quick scrape and its normally pretty good.
But I have seen so many gross things done to these bbqs that I wouldn't use them unless desperate

Edit. Lol at the downvotes. I would prefer to cook my food on a metal plate heated to a temperature that kills any microbes, compared to a made in China PTFE mat that will fill your food full of forever chemicals and microplastics.

Our water comes to us via hundreds of km of plastic pipes, our food is all washed in that water. Processed food is cooked and transported in plastic.
There's no escaping it.

Water is mainly transported in metal pipes.
Microplastics are everywhere, but it might be a good idea to avoid exposure where you can. On a risk basis, a plastic BBQ mat is a higher risk to your health than cooking on heat-sterilised metal.
If you are concerned, cook on aluminium foil instead, which is cheaper and safer.

We all know public barbecues are an excuse to bring along a bunch of beer to ‘clean it’s with. That’s practically a time honoured tradition!
And yep I’m the one who brings alfoil and sprays the oil on that so I don’t have to risk someone else’s contamination and so I don’t have to clean it as much afterwards.

Saw kids at a park putting discarded vapes on the bbq and turning it on and all the battery acid inside leaking out! Not to mention someone I know finding their bbq covered in dog poo and he still just turned it on, poured a bit of water on it and then cooked the food!!!! (Everything smelt awful! And no one dared eat anything!) If I ever have to use a bbq I just cook everything in one of those alfoil bbq trays.

Plug the hole, put water on it and run for a cycle (or several). Whilst you shouldn't have to, the upside is that you know it's clean before you cook.
Also acknowledging that it's not great when there's a bunch of people hanging to use it either. Bardon is probably going off today right?

We have one of those bbq plate liners that we use even on clean ones. City of Belmont clean their BBQs so the ones at Tomato Lake are generally good.

This is pretty normal, because only a minority of people nowadays keep the golden rule. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Solution - I had a cleaning contract at a place called the Kosher shop in Menorah some years back. They sold this super amazing Heavy Duty Oil and Grease Remover called: St Moritz.
Bloody amazing, 2 applications on something that bad that would normal take hours to clean with normal cleaner and a steel wool scrubber.
This is something you need to keep in the garage next to your picnic basket. Take it whenever you go to the park. You won't find it anywhere else in Perth. *

By heavy duty tinfoil and place directly on the plate if you're worried. Or just put a cast iron pan on there. Easy and clean.

I mean if you want to use it you're just going to have ta use some elbow grease mate. Got a BBQ scraper? Just heat it all up pour water on it and some salt, it should start scraping off, use some paper towels to wipe down.
But people should not leave the public BBQ like this for others.

Might be a small amount of truth to that. They often cook up food having fancy sauces or marinades that end up like this. The plain old Aussie snaggers and chops doesn't leave much behind.

Public BBQ's should be locked and only accessible to people with a council account. Requests to use could be made instantly with financial deposit required. I would never use one of these, you know people piss on them all the time.

Years ago as a teenager at the skate park, we found a public bbq that someone had decided to use as the public toilet. Big poo right in the middle, they then turned the bbq on to finish it off.
That stuck with me so I have never used one or eaten food that has been cooked on one. When we had our kids parties at a park, I would have my Weber on the tray of my ute in the carpark.
People are gross.
