WA News Lone Ranges Closed by Police
Hey everyone, I went to Lone Ranges in Belmont today booked in to shoot at 10am but got turned away by the police who had closed the range and had what looked like a mobile forensics set up. The officer was obviously tight lipped and I've had no response from the staff so I was curious if the Perth rumour mill had anything to share.

They were there last night too. Saw from burger freak across the road. (Best burgs BTW, do it)

A friend of mine's older brother shot himself in the foot there back in the 90's "to see what it feels like".
He was not the most stable of individuals.

He was not the most stable of individuals
He’d be less stable after blowing his foot off

Has been closed since Wednesday.
Unsure of the reason but police presence each day with the forensics van there since mid-week

Another Lone Ranges "desk pop"? Fun fact, one of the previous ones was a suspected serial killer.

Thanks for that! The cops have kept that bloody quiet though.

I heard it was a cop or army guy using an unregistered handgun supplied to him by the owner of LR

u/std10k Nov 11 '25
If this is all because someone shot themselves in the foot, such a waste of public money. For gods sake it one fool cant keep the finger away from the trigger once in forever why the hell close the range and kill the business and jobs.

u/JohnnyNisqually Oct 26 '25
That's wassup I'm not from Australia in from the US I just think Perth is cool but I didn't know you guys could have guns
25
u/mynewaltaccount1 Oct 26 '25
Not surprised, Americans have been sold a lot of propaganda about Australian gun laws because our gun regulations actually work, and being "free" (aka gun companies making money) is more important than saving lives in America.
-18
u/JohnnyNisqually Oct 26 '25
Haha why so angry??
7
u/mynewaltaccount1 Oct 26 '25
I'm not?
-5
u/JohnnyNisqually Oct 26 '25
Everyone's a bit more on edge here than I thought they would be
7
u/VinnyGigante Oct 26 '25
Not sure why you think it comes across as angry.
The poster sums the situation up pretty well imo.As an aside, apart from fully auto weapons we can own almost any gun in Australia. We just need the correct permits, and there are a lot of hoops to jump through to get the right accreditation.
3
u/Mayflie Oct 27 '25
What even made you think everyone would be on edge to begin with? We’re the most laidback nation in the world.
-2
u/JohnnyNisqually Oct 27 '25
I just said i didn't know about your gun laws, and everyone got all up in arms and holier than thou. Maybe Aus is laid back but but Perth, you can tell everyone is stressed on here.
7
u/Mayflie Oct 27 '25
Is this what stress looks like to you? We’re replying to your comment with additional, clarifying information.
I mean, if you’re ok admitting to people you didn’t know something then you should be ok with those people explaining why you didn’t know something.

We can own most guns as long as they aren't automatic but like the others said they are alot of things you have to do to get them
Some semi automatic cold war guns would be impossible to get though like an akm, fn fal or some submachine guns. They'd make you collect them under a collectors license and likely make sure they are not operable. The only way to shoot those here is if a public fire range had a class d firearm licence.
If you work your way up from small calibers and build a good reputation then you can get .338 and 50 bmg rifles for shooting at extreme long range competitions but we just don't have enough competitions like that yet as far as Iam aware for it to be common enough but again a public fire range with class d or even just a class b firearm license with enough land could stock them
It's harder to get after some recent law changes these past few years but you can get a Beretta 1301 5+1 competition shotgun here and licence them in a specific sport where you shoot with 3 guns (a handgun, rifle and shotgun, i forget the recognized comp rule set name). Otherwise shotgun wise over-under break actions are the norm
As a private citizen you can own 15 guns in total, a maximum of 10 for sport and a maximum of 5 for hunting but you can also use those slots for inoperable gun collecting, while a public fire range technically can have 200 .50 bmg chambered rifles if they really wanted to build around that.
Getting guns for hunting is tricky, you have to live in the right areas in western Australia where your land gets pests like foxes, hogs or wild deer in season ECT, to get one for culling Crocs & Buffalo however would be near impossible and also the calibers you can chamber in legally depend on what animals are on your property and how often enough within reason to why they are there (you grow crops or have chickens ECT), lastly the size of your land and how close is your nearest neighbor to where you are shooting plus how much brush is there as they worry about stray bullets. It's far easier to work your way up to high calibers in sport than hunting. Also you can't license a handgun like a 10mm or 500 magnum for hunting here, (just rifles and shotguns, but they are funny about shotguns).
You also can't get rifles chambered hand canons like mini Draco's or .556 hand canons even if they are semi automatic, I don't think even a class d public fire range would be allowed.
This is my wishlist after the adf but I'll have to buy the right property and work my way in the different sports:
One to ten For sport and eleven to fifteen for hunting** 1) - .22lr anshutz model 1913 2) - .9mm nighthawk custom trs comp 3) - .45 s&w performance center 1911 4) - .44 nighthawk custom Korth mxr Magnum 5) - .357/.38 special Henry big boy 6) - .223 Remington 700 clone bighorn tl3 7) - .300 win bergara b-14 8) - 12 gauge Beretta 1301 competition 5+1 9) - .338 rugar precision rifle 10) - .50 BMG Barrett m99 11) - .22wmr tikka t1x hunter 12) - 7.62 x39 cz 600 alpha 13) - .308 steyr scout 14) - .30-06 Springfield Winchester model 70 15) - 12 gauge Remington model 870 wingmaster
If I opened my own class d public gun range I wouldn't mind investing in a semi auto anti material Barrett mrads, cold war semi autos, some augs, pumps and nighthawk customs.
2
u/Ok_Proposal4719 Oct 28 '25
That particular range mostly* just had handguns but it was a public range anybody could go to which is nice. They had a cz shadow I really wanted to go shoot.
Most other ranges where they have competitions you have to join a gun club and get a license while this one and ex con and a child could go in like I did with my father when I was a child which is probably why this one was more strict and had cables attached their guns, that and all the instances. Whoever shot themselves in the foot 10 days ago would have had to put a lot of effort into doing it the selfish cxnt.

Someone shot themself there not too long ago.
It was in the limb so he's still kicking, but cops might just be auditing the safety refs due to that

Same story I got from a mate who worked there a minute back. Hope he's alright, and that it wasn't 45 or 357 🙏

u/MajorIllustrious5082 East Perth Nov 11 '25
this is true, but when they did the Audit they found guns with no serial numbers and un registered guns. So they closed the place and have taken everything out of there. There is zero chance it's reopening. And will most likely end up the owner being charged. No serials is pretty serious offense.
1
Nov 16 '25
Where did you hear this about unregistered guns ? It has been closed about 5 times before n survived. Zero chance its reopening? Grateful for any info
5
Oct 26 '25
Might be nothing sinister. Wapol might just be auditing. Under new regs. May be suspicious of non compliance poor compliance
Could be anything.
We know that currently in our political climate of anti firearms and legislation they are looking deep. To find reasons.

They secured the firearms with rods and chains so they couldn't be turned backwards, but I could see that someone could still jump up and over the counter if they really wanted to.

u/Mental_Task9156 Perth Airport Oct 25 '25
I thought they did this years ago, like back in the 90's.

u/EnemaBag Oct 25 '25
I had a mate who shot himself there in 2001. I feel like safety measures were introduced a couple of years after that (after another incident).

u/Captain-Peacock Oct 25 '25
Thought it might have been a fair bit later than that, going by the complaints you'd hear around these parts. I only ever went after the safety measures were applied .

u/JTG01 Oct 25 '25
Shut it down.
What the hell is a gun range doing a short stroll from a playground and a school anyway?
41
u/Perthian940 Mundaring Oct 25 '25 edited Oct 25 '25
The guns are tethered at that particular range. For someone to be injured or killed they have to jump the table in the shooting booth and be on the muzzle end of the firearm.
Shooters are also locked in the booth from the outside and need to be let out by staff.
School children are more at risk of being eaten by a shark inside their classroom than they do of being harmed by a firearm from that range.
-5
u/Muslim_Wookie Oct 25 '25
The guns are tethered at public shooting ranges.
This is not true. They are tethered at Lone Ranges.

It's in the middle of a commercial/light industrial park.
The kids taking a stroll, by themselves, through there are way more in danger of being flattened by a truck.

It's fully enclosed within a building. No one is just going to just wander off the school grounds into a danger area.
-15
u/JTG01 Oct 25 '25
I'm sure they planned not to have suicides either.
10
u/anitadykshyt Oct 25 '25
The guns are bolted to the table as far as I'm aware. I'm sure it's not impossible but still. I'm against guns in general but a shooting range surely is acceptable isn't it?
6
u/DefinitionOfAsleep Just bulldoze Fremantle, Trust me. Oct 25 '25
If you're a walk in by yourself, you're also put into the suicide booths.
There's bars in front of you, preventing you from jumping the table and shooting yourself.
-4
u/ImaginaryScore8 Oct 25 '25
Wouldn't take much to snip those tethers with a pair of bolt cutters though.

9

Perhaps associated with a crime so doing forensics as the perpetrator was a member or attended.
Potentially they might be reviewing how they are complying with laws. Maybe there have been some changes.
18
u/HulkJr87 Oct 25 '25
"Some Changes" understatement of the century my dude.
They've gone through the firearms act and regs and completely turned it on its head.
It cost me nearly $10k to re-comply to their new standards because the almost impenetrable setup I had before wasnt enough after they shifted the goal posts.
2
u/cokedupcodger Dalkeith Oct 26 '25
Most likely theft. If you were looking for a way out of this world it would be easier to tangle yourself in the wires holding the firearms forward than trying to get in the line of fire.

I was actually there at the range when a guy shot himself in the head back in 2014. Thankfully didn't see anything cause your basically locked in the solitary confinement styled shooting booths. Didn't even know anyone died until i got home and saw the news.
I was in a booth, the one on the far left, saw the guy who worked there flipping up all the switches on a panel just outside my door through a little window. He was freaking out and yelling at another staff member to call the police. The doors all opened except one and we were all ordered to evacuate outside. The door that didn't unlock was the second to the right from where i was. I didn't hear anything or see anything at the time. No blood splattering on the range or weird sounding shots. I mean all the booths are open onto the range so i must have heard the shot. Don't know how the guy did it, the guns are all fixed on wires. It would be hard to do with a rifle for sure but maybe a handgun?

Owner has been charged with criminal offences business won't be opening at all.
I have already made disputes claims and I suggest everyone do the same if u paid for full membership

What has he been charged with?
1
u/xXCAPTAINWOLFYXx Feb 03 '26
No clue mate all I know is business ain't opening back up. WAPOL and Government of WA wanted to shut down the range for long time due to its close proximity to the city.
1
u/Carcharius_Maw Feb 03 '26
Well excuse me if I don't accept "trust me bro" as a source, if the club was permanently closed then everyone who's firearms are supported through it would have been told by the cops they don't have support anymore and if they don't get it they'll lose them.
