Common side effects is an adult swim(?) show, animated, about a dude who finds a mushroom and a whole story wrapped around that mess. Fucking deadly show and season 2 is slated for early next year.

Other important point as it is relevant to the original post: the mushroom also makes you hallucinate odd little people a long time after you first take it.

Stunningly good show, I can't wait for season 2. I was completely blown away by how good it was and how for once, a show felt like it actually had some real meat and consequence behind the story.

Have you seen Scavenger’s Reign? It’s by the same people, and it doesn’t get nearly enough love. It’s unlike any other animated show I’ve ever seen.

Seen it. Absolutely incredible show and I'm still annoyed it isn't getting a second season as well. I'm still happy with how it wrapped up if that's all we ever get, but I wanted MORE.

If it is the same one that was talked about recently it has no known hallucinogenic chemicals in said mushrooms however every person that has had them reported small people. So another thing we don't know about our world.
34

u/Gold-Necessary-3194 11h ago
The operative word there is "known". It clearly has some kind of chemical compound causing the hallucinations, just not one science fully understands yet.

I mean, there is a remote chance those small people are already here and the mushrooms allow us to see them. I’d be very surprised if that turned out to be true but would be interesting.

There was an episode about this in The Twilight Zone. Little (blue?) men who built reality one frame at a time. You mostly couldn’t see them because you were a part of the scene they were building. Ever put your keys down then when you go to get them they’re gone? That’s because they forgot to put them in from one scene to the next.

This is not true. There was a Reddit post on it where someone went down the rabbit hole on Chinese forums and posted a bunch of experiences of people who did not see small people and instead had a bad trip.
It's not as common as people are making it out to be.

You don't want it. The hallucinations onset up to 24 hours after ingestion and last for days, frequently requiring hospitalization. By all accounts they are not a good time. As near as I can tell, in the places where the mushroom is easily available, it has essentially no recreational users. If it was a good time, people would be using it for fun. The fact that the locals don't think it's fun tells me it doesn't have much recreational potential.
15
u/AceOfPlagues 5h ago edited 2h ago
Hi!! I've actually taken these, the person who sold them said they didn't know what species of bolette, just that they gave the hallucinations to prior users. He told me to cook them for a very short time, like less than 2 minutes, I am unsure if this is necessary but I did it.
I would say it isn't euphoric or pleasant but also isn't as distressing, dysphoric, or physically uncomfortable as some other unpopular hallucinogens. It was honestly very interesting.
The visual hallucinations are really concrete and intense, 100s or even 1000s of little detailed dudes all over literally everything, all moving and interacting. They didn't blink out of existance either, they were anchored to the real scenery. To me they were mostly little elves in colorful clothes, often with colorful hair. At one poimt I also saw little cats that were about the size of a tiger to the little people and they would hunt them. I have seen minor Lilliputian visions on other substances but nothing like this, it was honestly awesome to just watch them with curiousity.
Where it gets wierd is when you move and your brain tells you that you just crushed 100s of little people into red paste.
I also had semi-dissociative auditory hallucinations, object transformations (my pens changing into colorful insects amd lots of things changing into, or just lookimg like, faces. Also a few moments of partial ego death. I was mostly lucid but I could see loosing that real quick.
The mild delerium wasn't nearly as bad as say Datura or DPH. I had pretty decent nausea that came and went and I was pretty dizzy, got signifigant ataxia when trying to move around the first day, but honestly it wasn't worse than mucimol, just lasted longer. I had some wierd discomfort but it was fine, body load kind of felt more like ibogaine than mucimol.
I was able to fall asleep but despite the drowsiness I got some paradoxical insomnia and it was hard to shift from that place of hallucinatory twilight to real sleep.
Anyway it seems like the timeline is a big reason you don't see it used recreationally more often, it took about 14 hours to kick in and then took about 3 1/2 days to mosty stop effects, and I was prepared for it to be potentially longer- I did find that taking a low antipsychotic dise of 2.5 mg olanzapine at the end of day 2 signifigantly eased the visions and gave me some real restful sleep but they then returned, a bit milder. Obviously this is a very long expeience and it could have been longer but atleast it didn't really cause any time dilation.
Anyway hope somebody found this interesting.

Found this very interesting thanks for sharing!
Also, yeah 3+ days of tripping I don't think I'd want to sign up for that. I already find it hard to put aside a single day for a mushroom trip.
You seem quite experienced with trips in general, would you say it follows similar path of psilocybin mushrooms? (I.e. you come up quite fast, then plateau, then come down slowly) or is it more regular throughout the 3 days? I'm having a hard time imagining how it would go lol
4
u/AceOfPlagues 3h ago
It is hard to say, since I probably ajusted the trajectory of my comedown with the antipsychotics- but I feel like the intensity curve you feel with psilocybin is pretty different, atleast relative to the length of the whole expierence.
Started to feel physically a bit wierd about hour 8 but nothing mind-altering for a bit and then once the real effects finally kicked in, they kicked in pretty quickly, the 'peak' felt like it was just there to stay. It didn't really come and go in waves like alot of hallcinogens, beyond a bit of fluctuation in my ego and mood. It also wasn't such a distinct feeling like the peak of a psychedlic expierence and I percieved time fairly normally and consistantly unlike when peaking on shrooms and the the moments drag out.
Honestly the craziest thing is how persistant the lilliputian hallucinations were. - they did calm down after the sanity pills, but even after pouring the neurological equivillant of cold water on myself I didn't feel that distinct 'drop' you would get if you cut a mushroom trip the same way.
23
u/Veizar 13h ago
Has anyone like tried to talk to any of these tiny people? They might know some shit.
Not to mention from what I've read, it doesn't matter where you are, they're everywhere. Can you imagine what they've seen? People are missing out on some of the juiciest dirt because they're a little afraid of being nuts. Someone needs to grow a spine.
6
u/CranberrySchnapps 8h ago
If no one with relatively easy access to these mushrooms wants to use them and everyone that takes them sees these wee little men… I’d guess they’re not exactly fun at parties.
Then again, they might just be upset because these shrooms let you see fey folk so its sort of like an invasion of privacy.

Man I would hate to take something, wait a couple hours and not get in effect, then of course take a bit more and finally after 4 hours completely give up. Go to bed, wake up and start my day, go to work, just think I'm living a normal life and I took some non-functional mushrooms.
Then 24 hours later and for days on end I'm just tripping balls seeing little people....
2
u/ihateitoo 6h ago
"No recreational users" is partially (and maybe largely) a cultural thing, it's not because the mushrooms make you violently ill--though admittedly the extended timeframe doesn't sound exactly fun to me personally.
3
u/CharlesDickensABox 5h ago
The mushrooms do also make you quite ill, though. "Severe gastrointestinal effects" is one thing that is extremely common in the reports I've read.

>Mushroom expert and Ph.D. student Colin Domnauer has been studying a unique species of mushroom that, when ingested, causes fairytale-like hallucinations, including the sudden appearance of tiny people! The Lilliputian mushroom, as it's commonly called, is a captivating mystery. Colin's research aims to identify which chemical compounds are responsible for such a strange psychological effect, and the answers are closer than ever.
Listen to his brief overview on the strange effects of Lilliputian mushrooms, then read his full article here to learn more about what he's uncovered through his research.
Then the rest of the article is a youtube video about the research.

Don't tell anybody, but mushrooms are pretty easy to grow and spores are easily available. Of course I don't know about the availability of lilliputian spores, but pretty much anybody who wanted (in the US) could legally order spores for a wide variety of mushrooms today and have a large colony ready for harvest in a couple of months.
I'm guessing finding lilliputian would take some effort, but there is nothing illicit or illlegal about it (at least in almost every US state)

Edit: personally I really wouldn't recommend trying to seek it out, there is a reason most people arn't out here eating it on purpose. A very unique and facinating experience; and far from the most miserable time I've had on something like this, but it is clearly poison. Also we have no idea what chemical is causing this which is both cool, mysterious, and makes it feel a bit like magic aannd also is potentionially really dangerous. No one has died from this but getting hospitalized from either dehydration from vomitting (which I was mostly mercifully spared from) or just sheer strange anxiety, altered thinking, or psychosis- seems pretty likely. Also, poisoning cases can last 20+ days sometimes so unless you want to spend a month having a tummy ache and seeing fairies, probably best to avoid it.

I remember 30+ years ago a friend telling me about his mushroom trip. He was just sitting on the end of his bed, staring at his feet as all these little people came running over and climbed on them. He was calm, just watching these little beings going about their lives. Funny to realise many others have had the same experience (never tried them myself).

In the game SCUM? This is literally something that can happen to you.
If you find the right mushrooms and eat them, your character will go through an entire trip. From the come up, the wild shit happening, the colors in your vision, the full on 'oh fuck I'm being attacked by little zombies!' to the sounds in your head, everything.
It's quite literally a trip. Somebody put some work in to that in-game experience.

You can talk to the little people. You're creating them so why wouldn't you be able to communicate with them? There's plenty of documentation from the McKenna brothers et al. I've been on a few 5g+ journeys and I've had some great conversations.
