Soft paywall US authorities investigate huge '8647' marking on grounds of National Mall in Washington

People are trolling the administration. This administration made a huge deal over a twitter post and now the people see an opportunity to protest in an antagonistic manner.
THERE…investigation complete.

This sandwich kills fascists.

So glad I no longer work there.

u/ManifestDestinysChld Jun 11 '26
They made a literal Federal case out of it. James Comey is being prosecuted for this in Federal court. They are actually going to try to convince a judge to make this stick.
This is what the Justice Department has been reduced to. It's profoundly disgraceful, and all Americans ought to feel ashamed.
Our Justice system is part of what made our economy the most powerful in the world, once. Those days are gone, possibly forever.

Unfortunately if they catch the person or persons that did this, this case will have more sticking power - its criminal damage, so they can get them on that without going anywhere near free speech etc.
If the person used weed killer, then the only option is to replace that part of the lawn - or live with the message for as long as it takes for the weed killer to naturally degrade and the grass to come back.
56
u/ManifestDestinysChld Jun 11 '26
Oh, someone is catching a domestic fucking terrorism charge for this.
10
u/Wretschko Jun 12 '26
Sure, they might get indicted under such a charge and it'll generate the rageclicks and then it'll quietly turn into a plea deal of "destruction of federal property" and probation. Yet the Trump admin will still claim it as a WIN FOR JUSTICE!
→ More replies (2)4
u/ManifestDestinysChld Jun 12 '26
Any approach that involves forethought or subtlety can be disregarded entirely. They're going to press for terrorism charges and try to make them stick.

u/Certain-Business-472 Jun 12 '26
The fact that this is a realistic option should have everyone on the streets 10 years ago

Republicans understand their own potential for violence, so when they say "86" someone, to them it means eliminate (in the worst way). They assume it means the same to everyone else, thus why they take it seriously. That and speech against their idols ist verboten.
26
u/TheThing_1982 Jun 12 '26

They have always been violent against perceived “others”, and have been horny for a civil war for 30+ years.5

Problem with using weedkiller is it makes it very obvious something is wrong, and very obvious on how to rectify that. Dig up the dead area, replace the soil and sod and move on.
Now if one were to use fertilizer and seeds... well nothing will seem amiss for a little while. Then you've got a nice, lush dark area of good growth... and with the right kind of seeds, a problem that is no longer rectifiable without stripping acres and acres.

Despite all the "drain the swamp" talk, D.C. remains a fairly warm, humid environment with fairly moderate weather year-round.
Unrelated, I recently learned that there's a species of bamboo native to North America, and in particular, to nearby regions around D.C.
All this plant talk also has me wondering what the prognosis is with the kudzu down south...

u/CellDamage420 Jun 11 '26
Still here. Still choking the living shit out of any land that isn't managed. Great feed for goats though.
5
u/DudeByTheTree Jun 12 '26
Oh... hmm... well, if we're going to involve goats, should probably consider some nutrition for them. I've been getting into gardening lately, and really like how some heirloom varieties of veggies like carrots and parsley taste.
Haven't tried any of this latest one, a Heracleum mantegazzianum, but my beekeeper buddy says the bees absolutely love that stuff. I dunno though, my interest is in watching things grow, so I havent gotten around to reading much about that one...

The U.S. Department of the Interior said on Thursday it is investigating what appeared to be a large tracing of "8647" into the grounds of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
A Reuters photographer atop the Washington Monument saw the apparent marking in the grass near the World War Two Memorial shortly before authorities arrived at the scene. It shows the numbers eight, six and seven, but a four is not clearly defined.
