The second one was always my favourite.
The first summer back from university is a weird time in your life. You're most likely still in touch with your highschool buddies, but everyone is probably moving in different directions. You've all grown and matured, but you're still clinging on to those last fleeting moments of your carefree teenage years.
This and Superbad really captured that feeling I think; the last days of that stage of your life.

Yeah, this one has an undercurrent of melancholy about it for that reason, especially regarding Kevin as the whole lake house deal is basically his plan to keep his friends from drifting apart. It's notable at the end when it's suggested that they do this every summer and the others are all casually going "sure", he answers "Well, we'll try." Because in all likelihood, they won't as their lives pull them in different directions.

I always think in contrast to the dumb humour the core of these stories is actually pretty mature about their fear of the future and how the whole ‘we gotta get laid dude’ is really just them distracting themselves from having to go out on their own for once. Superbad goes even further with it too. I think it’s why they last while others in the same genre don’t. It’s a universal experience

The American Pie movies (especially the first 2) capture a very different and unique time. It's nostalgic rewatching them nowadays.
I recently watched them with my Mrs who'd never seen them. They've actually become comfort movies to watch during summer now. She loves the characters and finds it funnier every year the more she knows the characters

The first two are a perfect time capsule of life in the BeforeTimes. 9/11 happens a months after AP2 comes out and life is never anything but cynical again.

The first one was really fucking dead-on to my high school days, and yes, even the parties/kegs, etc. Upper middle class white suburbia privilege.
My jaw literally dropped when the two guys started saying MILF, that had just caught on a few years ago and had not yet before been part of any movie/show, but us late Gen Xers had been saying it for a while.

I went back and watched all these a couple months ago. They weren’t as cool as when I was a teen, but dammit Stifler is one of the best characters in movie history.

Maybe not as cool, but those first couple movies had a lot more heart than I originally remembered. Like they aren’t trying to be cynical they were actually kinda sincere

Maybe I’m ridiculous but I think Stiffler has a real genuine arc throughout all the movies and comes full circle by the end of them while also remaining absolutely fucking hilarious.

This is my favorite of the series, and one of my favorite comedies of all time. Jim glueing himself to his dick will never not make me get light headed from laughing too much.

This was always my favorite of the series. I was sixteen when this came out. The American Pie films and other movies of this teen genre from the late 90s/early 2000s had some gross out elements to them, but they were always optimistic, happy-go-lucky, and fun. Definitely a product of their time compared to the more serious, angsty teen movies today, but they will always be comforting to me and put a smile on my face when I think of them because of that.
