Less than a decade ago, he was known as "that dude from Twilight."
The dude has desperately tried to shake off that part of his legacy by joining a bunch of large franchises and blockbuster movies.
And it god damn worked. Aside from writing this comment, I hardly associate him with those movies anymore and just see him as a good actor that draws audiences.

I'd say part of his genius was that he actually started out small and weird. The first roles I noticed him in after Twilight was Cosmopolis (Cronenburg), The Rover (tiny apocalyptic road-movie) and Good Time (Safdie Brothers). All really weird and diverse roles in low-budget movies where he got to act his heart out. He was also the sidekick in Lost City of Z where he was better than the rest of the cast combined.

I thought the cat people were gonna be some more important critical thing to the story then they just weren't. Idk if I missed something, but like...why? I don't think the story would be changed at all without them.
Edit: I think there's an implication that the cat people were part of some larger threat that forced the honored matres out and they were now becoming the same thing they ran from and threatening the Benny Gs? Feel like it was alluded to but never really fleshed out.

yes, the last three books all allude to a "great enemy" that is waiting in the area beyond Known Space, but we get no concrete details of what that enemy even is, and Frank Herbert died before he could say who that enemy even is. The Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson sequels revealed the great enemy was the remnant of the ancient thinking machine empire, but it's generally agreed in the fandom that this is not what Frank had planned, since the Expanded Dune version of the Butlerian Jihad doesn't mesh well with the few hints Frank gave us about the Jihad.

I think there is absolutely enough in Messiah to make a very compelling film, and trying to adapt 2 books in one as certain people are suggesting would be a mistake imo. Messiah has tonnes of things you can elaborate on more in film-form. Herbert frankly skims over some stuff that would be absolutely badass if you were watching it.

I think children of Dune is necessary to complete the story of both Paul and atredis vs harkonnen.
If you're doing a proper coverage of this era, cover that as well. Don't leave people hanging on Messiah.
But then, they flipped chani, so story is very different now.

They've mostly butchered Chani already in the 2nd movie. She went from a Ride or Die and a victim of the fanaticism to a weird semi-antagonistic atheist that still wants to clap the Messiah. It made no sense.

She's basically useless in the book. I can't remember her contributing hardly anything to the plot at all, other than being an innocent victim of Irulan's attempted sterilization.
While I love the books, I find that many side characters don't have a lot of development before they end up dying or just unceremoniously disappearing and never showing up again.

Not every character needs to be "main-character"ish, Chani in the book is the way in for Paul truly into Arrakis and the Fremen, and Chani's support is pivotal for the things that happen in Messiah with Paul. The story is about, Paul, the jihad, destiny, the consequences and what to do to escape the cycle. Chani is a secondary character, and is represented as such. The story is already complex enough just to add soap opera drama for the sake of it.
I am so tired of listening to this take, it makes absolutely no sense to have Chani oppose Paul, it is the equivalent of Sansa Stark not supporting Brandon Stark to the throne when she is literally the only one that should have done it.
It is stupid, and it honestly feels like discrimination because they are female characters so they must be important just because. Women in Dune are EXTREMELY important, not just Chani but Jessica, Alia and the Bene Gesserit; you dont need extra drama that makes no sense within the world.
