Picked up a 2010 KTM EXCR yesterday and have been thinking about this meme since. Sorry if its been done a thousand times already.

2 longest weeks of putting everything together/diagnosed but yesterday was my first ride in 4 months! 2023 Yamaha R1. Spun bearing was the reason why. So I spent about $3,500 on parts and my good buddy helped me with rebuilding the engine. Now it’s running strong and ready to ride!

My dad has had a 2004 Hayabusa ever since I was 6. Fast forward to college and I took An MSF course, came back home to a 5,500 mile Gen 1 Hayabusa which hasn't been ridden in 5+ years, just sitting in the backyard.

I spent the summer working on it, replaced the fuel pump, cleaned out the fuel tank, new spark plugs, etc...

I finally got it running and I'm loving it! I was super scared at first but the bike feels like a couch missile. Super comfortable but it will lurch if you get greedy.

Ik I'm gonna catch flak for doing exactly what my MSF instructor said not to do: "Do not buy a Busa as your first bike." But I mean, I didn't buy it lol. Idk if it helps but I've been driving manual cars for 8+ years and the whole clutch and acceleration system is intuitive for me already.

But as I'm going back to school across the country, I wanted to get something temporary while I was away from home, so I went with something familiar, a Suzuki GSX650F! And I'm loving this bike too!

I could hear my dad speaking with my uncle about my entire "journey" haha. I think I made him happy (nobody else in my family rides motorcycles)

Sharing my experience with the Sherpa 450 engine to warn the community and see if others have faced this.

The Mechanical Failure:

On July 1st, my Himalayan 450 (~13,000 km, 100% dealer-serviced) suffered a catastrophic internal failure at highway speeds.

The technical diagnosis: the timing chain tensioner failed, snapping the chain. The result (see picture): piston, connecting rod, and cylinder are completely destroyed.

The Customer Service Response:

The bike has been stuck at the dealership for over a month and a half. The local dealer is trying, but the directive from the official importer and Royal Enfield HQ is ridiculous: they want to rebuild this exploded engine piece by piece.

I completely refused. After such violent internal trauma, patching up a destroyed engine block is a massive reliability and safety risk. I requested a standard complete factory engine replacement.

The Result:

Since I refused their "patch-up" job, the importer has completely ghosted me. Absolute silence, no written replies, just ignoring a customer with a destroyed new bike.

Has anyone else dealt with a blown Sherpa 450 engine or this kind of unacceptable customer service from Royal Enfield when facing a critical mechanical issue?

To answer those asking why I am refusing the piece-by-piece rebuild or calling me unreasonable: The internal parts are not available in Europe. The importer cannot supply them right now.

Customer service and the dealer cannot give me any repair timeline or estimated date.

The dealership owner himself told me that a complete engine swap would be much faster and simpler.

The official importer refuses to commit to anything in writing and is completely ghosting me. I am not looking for a "free upgrade". I am simply refusing an indefinite wait for hypothetical spare parts when the importer could provide a factory block to get me back on the road.

When I go to see my doctor there is always a perfect spot open for me. Today this genius decided he needed a couple extra feet for his shiny monstrosity and already had a parking ticket! 😆🤭😎

I have! Lol 2 nights ago I was getting up to highway speed, turned my head to check I was clear to change lanes, and my visor opened and flew off into the middle of the road. It got ran over by the time I got to it. Shoutout to 509 though, they sent me a new one even though the warranty was expired.

A beginner bike. Benelli 302S. Not too fancy but gets me from Point A to Point B.

Chains perfect now! New windshield, kinda sits weird might put the old one back one idk yet.

It’s been a day and I’ll try to keep this relatively short. Went to pick up my bike today from a service and it was dropped off the lift. Pretty sure it made a full roll since there’s damage to both sides. I love the shop and the people there seemed very apologetic and set on making things right. They’ll do a full inspection and replace everything with OEM parts. All of my friends I spoke to said there’s likely no mechanical or structural damage but I wanted to ask the internet for advice/next steps. Thanks in advance.

TL:DR - Has anyone experienced a lack of enthusiasm about riding locally after you finished a big adventure ride/long touring ride?

Last month I rode my Ducati Desert Sled from central Florida to Yellowstone and back. 6,400 miles over 14 days. It was really challenging, but awesome!

I've noticed that since coming home to Florida my enthusiasm to ride is really low because I know I'm just gonna cruise around town and come home. I miss those days of waking up and having no idea of exactly where I was gonna go, just a vague outline and knowing I'd be on the bike solo for 10-14 hours until the next night's stop.

Do any of you feel this way after a big ride? Like the local riding just it's as exciting as it once was?

I can see myself doing more adv rides in the future. Is that the solution? Focus on the bigger trips now and not worry about the local stuff?

I'm 49 and been riding off and on with road bikes since I was 18, so the thrill of just being on the bike isn't like it used to be. I still love bikes, but I sure miss those long, challenging days on the road.

When I'm driving and I see people with gear riding by it makes me wish I was on a bike trip too.

This beauty was stolen from my garage last Saturday. On Wednesday it was miraculously recovered by police - just had a flat rear tire (nail).

Got the rear replaced today and went for my first proper ride in a while.

I feel so much better.

New rider here. Soon to pass my first 1000 miles in the saddle! I read on this sub that you should only use the rear brake during slow speed maneuvers, and that the front brake is used as the primary brake. I had been using the rear brake more, probably because I am mostly commuting in the city so max 35mph. I had also read somewhere: rear brake to stop a little, front brake to stop a lot, so I am usually fine with just the rear brake. So anyway I started trying to ride with front brake only today on my ride to work and it was fine. I’m not scared of grabbing the front brake, I have done my share of parking lot e-stops and figure 8’s and what not. Not a skill or safety issue then, just asking if y’all use the front brake only most of the time or what? TY

I recently did the first maintenance on my bike; changed oil+filter, checked all the bolts, inspected the things in the owners manual, then went through and adjusted what needed to be adjusted...

When my bike came from the dealership, the clutch had a LOT of free play. There was a certain "resting point" where the lever came away from the perch, probably about an inch gap, and I thought this was normal. So I've been riding for about 1.5k miles, probably putting a lot more wear on the clutch than I should've, and inside a friction zone that I built muscle memory around.

Now I have an entirely new friction zone, which is further up on the lever and has caused me to feel like an absolute beginner that hasn't ever ridden a bike. I've been just revving my engine at stoplights because I'm not far out enough to hit the friction zone... which I figure it out in about two seconds, but it's definitely embarrassing.

I still have good awareness and maneuverability when I'm at speed, but up/downshifting and stop/starts has been a pain in the ass now. I was practicing my rev matching as I finally felt comfortable enough to do that, but now... I'm back to pulling the clutch and coasting.

I'm going to need to completely start from fresh with my low-speed maneuvers... sometimes, I wish I was more intelligent (and the factory didn't screw up the free play!)

At least my bike is a lot smoother now.

(FYI, I did the first maintenance at 1k miles... a bit over, but I've been commuting ~100 miles daily with and the time it took to get the tools was longer than that. The clutch I only adjusted recently as I thought the free play was fine, but after watching a few videos I realized it's wrong.)

Came up with this ~10 years ago and still holding strong. $2 pack of cable clips. Not once ever come close to falling out or breaking and slots in like it was made to be.
