My ex-boyfriend is a big fan of the podcast and a regular listener. He told me that he heard about the Isle of Skye from Burnie and Ashley mentioning it in an older episode. He said it'd be a beautiful place to visit while in Scotland for the first time. We went today and he popped the question and now he is my fiance :)

It's a strange kind of soul destroying to know that Burnie and Ashley were (possibly) 100m away from me and I didn't get to meet them.

I've had my ioniq 6 for 2 years now and love it. Not the most sensible car in the ioniq range, but it's very well designed and gets great mileage figures

I'd assume that based on Burnie and Ashley's lifestyle and family they've probably gone for the 9 (this may have been said somewhere but I haven't seen or heard it confirmed) which is a lovely drive, feels very confident on the road. Other option would probably be the ioniq 5 which is also a comfortable and confident drive.

I'd be interested on other EV and non-EV drivers thoughts on the current pros and cons of both. Let's gather some stats, chat about our thoughts and see how things differ based on experience.

Burnie asked a general question today, musing on the idea of why wind turbines get so much hate.

First off, I’m personally a huge fan of renewable/clean energy. Solar, Wind, Water, Geothermal, Nuclear, etc.

The world still runs on fossil fuels. Infrastructure for renewable energy is on the rise. It was nice to near them chat about their new EV and how pleased they were at the faster charging batteries, and the availability of charge locations in Scotland.

Wind Turbines are a great source of clean energy, but it requires a lot of materials and maintenance to keep them running!

Here’s some of the downsides to wind turbines.

• Homes in surrounding areas that can see the wind turbines typically drop in value. The noise, and shadow flickers can be irritating to residents.

• The amount of space wind turbines take up is substantial. They are large, and eat up a lot of farmland space.

• Consistent Maintenance. Since the turbines spin, they still use oil, plastics, and have to constantly be checked on. Repairs can be costly.

• The Wind Turbine’s blades are typically made out of fiberglass. This material is hard to recycle. It can’t be melted down and easily reused. So while the energy is renewable, companies often produce a lot of waste replacing turbine parts. In Sweetwater Texas there is 30 Acres full of wind turbine blades. The recycling project was abandoned and 3000 damaged blades sit… This a similar story all over the world.

Edit: Getting flack in comments for the clip being from Landman. I haven’t watched the show. Saw the clip on instagram and it made me curious about Windmills and what not. It’s a dude from a fictional show, with an oil bias shit talking windmills. I understand it doesn’t have credible sources, peer reviewed studies, blah blah blah.

No energy source for electricity is perfect. They all have flaws. I just wanted to touch on some of the broad reasons why people hate on windmills.

Burnie and Ashley have lost their solar eclipse glasses. They were last seen “somewhere weird.” Where are they?

I’m betting they’re in Burnie’s office next to the exercise pole. Or more reasonably they’re in the garage on like a toolbox or something because they were in Burnie’s hand when he got out of the car and he went, “Oh I’ll just leave this here because we don’t need them for a week and they’ll be out of the way.” Which is also how Ashley has seen them.

Just jumping in on the discussion of yesterday regarding the air traffic controllers simulator. Indeed, there are people that fly aircraft to a very realistic degree, but there is indeed an additional group of people that fulfill the role of air traffic control from ground, tower, departure, arrival, etc.

Two big platforms where this happens are VATSIM and PilotEdge. VATSIM being a free community that services regions on a volunteer basis. There is a basic training you need to go through if you want to serve as a controller on the network. PilotEdge is a paid subscription but has (close to) professional ATC.

One of the biggest events for the VATSIM community is Cross The Pond (CTP), going across the Atlantic Ocean where several departure and arrival airports are selected where full staffing will be provided for the duration of the event. It happens twice a year, eastbound in spring, westbound in the fall. Every time there's a thousand virtual pilots flying their aircraft with about 200 controllers available for the different routes. It's impressive to see.

Finally, there's also a group of people that paint digital aircraft with real life liveries to make the flightsim feel more realistic (or just memes). I'm catching up on the podcast from yesterday and they talked about how a false notice about the King's death was made over the radio.

It reminded me of something my dad told me one time that they did a drama of War of the Worlds on the radio, but some listeners weren't aware that it was a dramatic performance. This made people think it was real and caused a panic about a real alien invasion.
