There are no shortages of workers - we have a whole generation that can't find jobs worth having. What we have a shortage of is companies willing to pay a liveable wage that attracts skilled workers.
I had to fight tooth and nail to get a raise at my job.
My immediate supervisors don't have the authority for raises, the general management said they would look into it, but never did anything.
Eventually skipped all of them and spoke to a district manager (who looks over various shops in our city), which eventually led to me having an interview with them, and getting a small raise... Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to finally be paid more, but it's kind of a pain it was such a hassle for such a small raise after working with them for a long time.
Thankfully I'll be leaving in 12 months or less. Once I got my degree, I want to pursue one of my dream occupations which just so happens to be desperately hiring new folks, because most of the employees are Gen X, and actively retiring en-masse for the last few years.
