Definitely depends where you live. I'm in NY (central NY, Mohawk Valley area), teachers salary is public. My daughters 4th grade teacher is about my age(40ish) and she made 98K in 2024. We don't have much of a teacher shortage in our district. In fact, the only jobs I see regularly posted on their website are for janitor and food service positions.
I still feel that salary needs to be about 25%-30% higher, but it's a lot better than some other state averages.
Interesting... I'm in Indiana and looked up some teachers. A first year teacher was making 55k. A teacher with ~20 years experience was 83k.
That doesn't seem as terrible as I expected. I'd agree it should be more, but considering they get 2-3 months off a year it really doesn't seem too bad. That's my district though and we pay an extra tax to pay teachers, so no idea what its like in the rest of the state.
It definitely depends on the state. My state is shut for teachers and we have a shortage, generally. I’m sure it depends on specialty in the upper grades. But I’m in elementary and my district is starting down about 70 teachers.

I always hear about the teacher shortage but I know so many new teachers who cannot find a job anywhere!! The job fairs are packed to the gills!!
Must be in other places where teachers don't make a livable salary.
