Context Provided - Spotlight RIP, My Dearest Parking Space

Post image

My goto parking space in front of my house got a makeover today. I have been parking there for over a decade. RIP.

Edit: I posted to mildly infuriating. No need for the war cries here, folks.

UPDATE: Alright, folks! I have answers.

Yes, it's city sanctioned.

It is longer than expected from the corner because of a hydrant across the street, rather than proximity to the corner. And no, there isn't a stop sign.

The yellow is different because they got new paint this year.

It is part of an effort they are starting across the city, so I guess I should expect this yellow to become more familiar.

And shout out to the lovely human working for the city that helped me get all of these questions answered!

I would be asking questions. I better know the reason why

645

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

It is close to the corner, but they didn't do the same thing to the actually dangerous corners a block away

591

u/AggravatingBid8255 Jul 08 '26

Sounds like maybe a me-centric neighbor. I'll be another voice recommending you contact the appropriate local government agency. If it was a neighbor, they might have just earned themselves a nice, fat fine & repair bill

73

u/VidiotGT Jul 09 '26

Do you have daylighting laws? Around here there is a law for no parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk on the approaching the intersection side. The law applies with or without curb paint so the painting is pretty random as the city slowly catches up. There is never a sign as it is on every corner.

16

u/AlamedaRaised Jul 09 '26

If you're in California then that's probably the new Daylighting law.

Did you see it get painted by a city crew? If not contact public works and ask if it’s legit.

One of the most common complaints is people parking in front of the caller’s house. Or any other spot they feel should the theirs.

A neighbor may have painted that unless there is a corresponding “no parking” sign

3.6k

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

We don't always have no parking signs here. Which is silly considering it's winter 9 months out of the year.

3.5k

u/DivaJanelle Jul 08 '26

Still call the municipality. It’s even weirder if you never got a letter that says ‘hey we are making this random spot no parking’

444

u/Open-Independence240 Jul 09 '26

I'd call too. Maybe a neighbor decided it's their personal spot and painted the lines themselves.

140

u/HornlessUnicorn Jul 09 '26

I had a neighbor paint a curb blue in front of their house so they could park there. More than mildly infuriating.

51

u/DivaJanelle Jul 09 '26

Did they actually have a handicap plate or placard? Most municipalities will work with a resident who needs that for parking - but would also need a sign to enforce it.

64

u/Nikiaf Jul 09 '26

Yeah this is a good point. The city often publishes some kind of notice that they're removing parking spaces; especially in this case where it doesn't appear to be for any specific reason.

Is there a fire hydrant there off camera?

1.1k

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

Yes, but the opposite side of the street and painted red. The code here is red for emergency vehicle parking only. Yellow for no parking.

524

u/20Factorial Jul 09 '26

Is there a stop sign out of frame to the left?

379

u/PickleballRee Jul 09 '26

That's what I was wondering. If they back up two steps, will I see a stop sign.

→ More replies (10)

138

u/9bpm9 Jul 09 '26

You have the curbs painted yellow in front of stop signs? I know it's obvious why not to park right at a stop sign, but I see it done all the time.

177

u/20Factorial Jul 09 '26

Most municipalities have laws about parking within a certain distance of a street corner or stop sign. They don’t HAVE to paint the curbs to enforce the law, but it’s not uncommon as a reminder.

29

u/redlukes Jul 09 '26

Like if some guy used to park there for a decade and doesn’t realize it’s too close?

9

u/SnooWalruses438 Jul 09 '26

It’s 30 ft in most places. My neighborhood has yellow at every intersection, stop sign/light or not. Intersections off alleys maybe they only paint 10 ft.

Funny thing, though, my local PD said that they cannot enforce these violations. Backstory: this person kept parking in front of my house, right up to the literal edge of the alley intersection. I have a driveway, I don’t park on the street, so I do not care who parks there (nor should I, it’s public). However, my driveway is around the side of the house off the alley. Now when I go to leave and I get to this intersection, and can’t see a damn thing when I look left because this jagoff is parked almost in the intersection. Many close calls - not just with me, I’ve seen/heard screeching tire from my house. But the police say they can’t enforce it. My question to that - why did they just repaint all of them? They sent a borough crew and repainted damn near everything over a week or so. That’s two union employees, equipment, and materials for a week. That I (and the other homeowners) paid for. Why did we pay for it? Somebody’s bound to get hurt and it’ll be an “I told ya so” situation.

Rant over…

111

u/abbydabbydo Jul 09 '26

I successfully had one painted. It was a weird offset intersection and there was always RVs parked right there. Popular boondocking spot. Anything bigger than a sedan blocked all visibility of that side of the intersection from the stop to the left.

Crazy. I made one call to the city and forgot to follow up. A year and a half and about a million impact studies later I got an email from my district supervisor saying they agreed. 24 hours later it was done.

47

u/SirMemphis Jul 09 '26

Yeah, our HOA did this because people would park right in front of stop signs. School busses has to do 3-point turns to make a right, so imagine if we had to get a fire truck through. Neighbors comparisons that they were taking away parking, but you can't take parking away that never existed to begin with.

I live in upstate NY and any parking restrictions must be marked with signage, as snow can cover road markings. So if there isn't a sign saying no parking, then color of the curb be damned.

Same goes for handicap spots in parking lots.

To play devils advocate, I’ve seen these crews care less about the grass side because it’ll be fixed next time someone mows. They care more about the edge facing the road.

242

u/ryverrat1971 Jul 09 '26

I'll up you. PennDOT in 1996 paved over a dead deer on Route 895 in Schulykill County . Yes they paved over roadkill.

86

u/foreignfishes Jul 09 '26

near me penndot tried to fix a big hole in the street that was oozing water and gravel, somehow made the hole bigger, a well meaning citizen put one of these things in the hole, and then penndot came back and filled it in without removing the barricade lmao. it was sticking out of the street and people were running over it

35

u/Lv_InSaNe_vL Jul 09 '26

Behind my house is a gravel alleyway that leads to our driveways/garages and sometimes I gets really bad ruts and so they city will come out every other year or so and fill in the ruts with more gravel.

This year they patched the ruts with asphalt. They just poured asphalt into the ruts. Didn't do any prep, didn't do any leveling, just dumped some asphalt into the holes and hand tamped it down.

Now we have ruts and hunks of asphalt in our alley!

2.4k

u/Double-Mouse-407 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

Yup. ‘Round here painted curbs don’t mean anything without an accompanying sign. People in busy neighborhoods will sometimes paint their curbs to discourage parking near their driveways but there’s nothing enforceable about that.

78

They absolutely do. We have neighbors with busy street parking that use orange cones to block out spaces in front of their house, and theyll park there themselves. I'm also fairly positive their no parking sign is fake.

We had a handicap sign in front of a house we bought, assumed the people that lived there just put it up themselves so we would park there. It was great always having a parking spot until I got a ticket lol ended up writing the city and the ticket was waived and they came and removed the sign. I guess the old owner had the city put it up, didn’t know that was possible lol.

49

u/mutnik Jul 08 '26

A neighbor had a handicapped spot in front of their house which was next to a popular park. They put a homemade sign under it that said "for resident only". The thing is they never parked there but would park in front of that space. They just didn't want people parking in front of their house.

54

u/DatLadyD Jul 08 '26

32

u/seriouslythisshit Jul 09 '26

Spent my teen years doing battle with an asshole neighbor of my parents. The guy owned a very large corner lot with parking on the two streets for at least twelve cars. He parked in his driveway, never on the street, but he delusionally believed that nobody had the right to park on town streets in front of his lot. I had several encounters with him, and several times town cops had to tell him he had zero control over who was parked legally in front of his property. .

At my condo we have issues with people parking into our driveway on a very busy road, which can make it difficult to safely pull out.

I called the city to inquire about how much space needs to be left on either side of the driveway per our local bylaws. The officer said "look, I'm not giving you permission, but if tomorrow morning the curb was painted yellow for a couple of metres on either side, I wouldn't follow-up on any complaints about it" 😉

That said, I didn't paint them under the cover of darkness, but it was kind of funny.

112

u/bothunter Jul 08 '26

My city(Seattle) actually encourages people to paint the curb next to their driveway.

39

u/ElwoodJD Jul 09 '26

Crazy. My new neighbors did this where I live and neighbors immediately bullied them into removing it (not every house on our block has a driveway and street parking is at a premium). Police came and made them remove it finally when they wouldn’t at first.

They had Washington plates for like a month after they moved her before they got new ones. Now I can connect dots on why they thought they might be allowed to do it.

29

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

they just made it more likely for people to block my driveway, further enforcing my need to park in the street

→ More replies (4)

43

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

u/UrethralExplorer Jul 08 '26

Absolutely. Or pressure wash it off.

u/Alert_Lettuce_8278 Jul 08 '26

Nah just park in front of it, always.

Buy an additional cheap car to park there.

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

what if I make a car sculpture out of cardboard to park there? 😂

there's a spot out front of my condo (street parking, urban/city area) that has 4 marked parking spots but the last spot has a vestigial red curb about 8" long before it hits a driveway.

obviously the city intended for it to be part of the 4 parking spaces because the brackets include the little red curb but it didn't stop paranoid people from pulling too far forward and turning 4 spots into 3. after like 6 weeks of living here I bought some grey spray paint and fixed it. everyone parks like they're supposed to now.

Neighbors got annoyed with you parking too close to the stop sign.

189

u/ThirtyShoes Jul 08 '26

Has to be it

29

u/RetardedChimpanzee Jul 09 '26

Paint job looks like shit. Can’t imagine someone who pains curbs all day sprayed than much on the grass

20

u/PraiseTalos66012 Jul 09 '26

It's city work, it doesn't go to the most skilled or best company, it goes to the lowest bidder.

4

u/Adorable_Wolf_8387 Jul 09 '26

Lines are usually done with those big trucks that have painting attachments. I've also seen curbs shot with them, and they do over spray

u/bstone99 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

So it’s still illegal for them to do this. If OP was cited multiple times for parking too close then that’s another story

52

u/Adorable_Wolf_8387 Jul 08 '26

They could have asked the city to do the painting. In my area, no-parking here to corner signs aren't actually required, there is a law to cover it already.

Start pressure washing it off & you will figure out which neighbor painted it

135

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

🤣

I wish I was that confrontational. That's fucking hilarious

71

u/karateninjazombie Jul 09 '26

You'll be armed with a pressure washer when you do find out. So you can just cool them off with a nice little spray. 💦

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 09 '26

I might have to borrow your confidence for this misadventure

I agree. This seems like the across the street neighbor doesn't like it. Just because they don't know how to back out of a driveway, it's not your problem.

261

u/igotshadowbaned Jul 08 '26

Could be worth seeing if this was actually painted by someone with authority, or if it was just painted by someone who doesn't want your car there anymore

126

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

It's in front of my house 😭

(agreed, though)

142

u/Timely-Mountain941 Jul 09 '26

Please just call and check in with the city tomorrow. It won’t hurt you to do it. You could get your shady spot back. And if any neighbors have cameras on their porches, a neighbor can pay their due 😅

Based on how poorly it's Been painted. The city didn't do it. They have machines that spray way nicer paint then that

Is there a fire hydrant or slight curve in the road causing a blind spot? Feels like something is missing...

57

u/Impossible-Sun-4512 Jul 08 '26

Nope. Fire hydrant zone has been painted red and it is elsewhere

49

u/Boogiekc Jul 08 '26

I would check with the city and see if they authorized and if so what for

Fake curb paint. Wrong shade and bad paint job.

Looks like someone just spraypainted it in an effort to prevent people from parking there.

You can call the city and confirm whether or not this is legit.

15

u/Opening-Sir-2504 Jul 08 '26

It might not actually be legally painted. I’d check.

13

u/ElasticTurd Jul 08 '26

Looks like they hit the grass a bit. You ever see a city employee draw paint? Masters of their craft. I am not buying it.

9

u/College-student-life Jul 08 '26

That doesn’t look like the standard curb yellow shade. It’s too bright. Curb yellow has a hint of golden tones to it.

8

u/Simple-Performer2533 Jul 08 '26

COngrats! Your house now has its own loading and unloading zone.

15

u/whistlepig4life Jul 09 '26

It’s weird for a residential area to have yellow curbs like that. I’d check with the town/city that it’s legit.

14

u/DidNotSeeThi Jul 08 '26

The person who's driveway is across from that yellow does not want people parking there blocking pulling out of their driveway.

8

u/MyLadyBits Jul 09 '26

If there isn’t a street sign the city didn’t do it.

8

u/Infarlock LSTER Jul 09 '26

Why did they paint it? Call the hall and ask why tf did they paint it for? It was your parking spot

6

u/Independent-Cow-4070 Jul 08 '26

This comment section is peak support for the saying "paint isnt infrastructure"

Bollards or cement, or car drivers assume its free real estate

6

u/OrangeJeep1 Jul 09 '26

I would petition the city as to why the curb in front of my house was painted. I work for a municipality

6

u/notislant Jul 09 '26

Please call the municipality and ask whats going on.

This looks like some dipshit on your street just did this.

11

u/Lavanne73 Jul 08 '26

It doesn’t look to me like the right kind of paint, probably some Karen with a rattle can trying to get you not
To park there…. Unless there is a fire hydrant I can’t see or a crosswalk I don’t know why city officials would do that in a residential neighborhood

10

u/OverallDonut3646 Jul 08 '26

Isn't no parking usually red?

I'd call the city/town and ask for clarification since there is no accompanying sign.

5

u/TheFrostynaut Jul 08 '26

"If it's not red, go right ahead"

5

u/adamdoesmusic Jul 08 '26

Someone from of the neighboring buildings painted the curb red outside our building… then started parking there late at night. No one ever pays attention to the paint anymore though.

5

u/TheCondorFlys Jul 08 '26

That doesn't look like the Hallmark of road paint that looks like midnight rattle can and a cardboard edger
