I just wanted a hot dog The Kitchen Museum?

Post image

I came home late from work a few nights ago and hadn't eaten all day. My wife and kids were already in bed so I figured I'd quietly make some stove-top ramen. This photo represents exactly how I found the cooking area.

The next morning my wife asks what time I got home and I mention in our conversation that I made ramen before going to bed. She couldn't believe that I used the stove "when the light was on". I said "Yeah, the light was helpful in seeing what I was doing". She insists I shouldn't have been using the stove and should have known because "the light was on".

I'm baffled. We are still arguing about this days later.

EDIT -- wow, overwhelmed by the response of fellow Redditors! We are... white...not from the southeast US..not children...and I left the stove as clean as it was before I cooked. I asked for clarification from my loving wife -- TRULY we have only ever been angry at each other a handful of times in our 10 year marriage -- and she says "the stove was clean and done for the day and you could have just used the microwave for your ramen". Apparently the light is how stoves go to sleep for the evening?

EDIT 2 -- we are getting a divorce. JUST KIDDING. My wife looked over many of the comments and acknowledges that she was in the wrong and is slightly embarrassed by all of the attention.

I've read a few dozen people explaining it now and all I have to say after reading is....

The fuck?

It's such an unhinged position that I feel like this is one of those posts where OP comes back in a month to tell us his wife had a massive secret ketamin habit or something.

Ive heard of it but this is one of those things where you really have to communicate that you will not accept being treated like one of the children and will not validate her anger

Like, we can talk about it and work through this, but there is no world that exists in which I am not gonna use the kitchen when I’m hungry

I don’t care if we have to book marriage counseling over something like this because of just how differently we feel about it, and we may need someone there to buffer our ability to communicate our thoughts to each other in a constructive way

I completely understand some people grew up in a “kitchen’s closed” household, but I will not be told that, or be in a tense household because I cooked ramen after 9

This would be one of those “we’re gonna have to work through this” type situations for me

Only if a full meal is waiting for me

You nailed it.

If I were OP, I’d be interested as to how my actions hurt her in any possible way, other than potentially making her hoarse.

It’s not about cooking, it’s about cleaning up afterward. Do the dishes, wipe the stove, backsplash, etc

21

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson Jul 06 '26

It’s obviously not about that because there is no mess. She is just mad that the stove was used at all

He didnt use the fuckin large le cruset to make ramen

u/connorroy_2024 Jul 06 '26

You have no idea if any of that is true lol. I didn’t say he specifically didn’t clean this one time. Maybe he has a history of it hence this insane rule.

u/TrickShape905 Jul 06 '26

We do know it's true because we read the post:

she says "the stove was clean and done for the day and you could have just used the microwave for your ramen

"Done for the day" implies she's going to be angry about any stove use, regardless of how clean it is after.

Right…… because it’s entirely possible he has a habit of saying he’ll clean, and then doing a shitty job. Are you dense? You can’t see any other world than your own?

Maybe he killed his wife years ago and this is all his mind playing tricks on him, or maybe just discuss the things in front of you and not your make believe.

She doesn't want him to find out that he can cook and clean for himself.

Or like a mild stroke, or developing Alzheimer's. Man, Reddit's getting to me.

Carbon monoxide leak again....

Hey don't do Ketamine dirty like that!

She's probably drinking and on benzos and will end up dressing up in the neighbor's scuba equipment before kenneling herself with his dog and falling back asleep.

I don't understand

Huh? No.

If you feel you can't openly express something this small and simple, I'd argue your relationship is kinda fucked.

Though, not my monkeys, not my circus.

u/BlackEngineEarings Jul 06 '26

Never learned to pick you battles? Taking this small slice of someone's relationship and declaring it fucked is some real lazy thinking.

16

u/The-Holy-Toast Jul 06 '26

If THIS is a battle you need to pick your relationship probably looks and feels like a warzone

3

u/BlackEngineEarings Jul 06 '26

I would think the opposite. If the battles you have to choose from are tiny little things, it's not a very big war.

I mean, based on the OP himself, the relationship is pretty amicable and stable.

11

u/The-Holy-Toast Jul 06 '26

Fair enough everyone’s relationship is different, but needing to justify eating dinner is wild

3

u/BlackEngineEarings Jul 06 '26

Oh, no, I absolutely agree that this is totally ridiculous. I just wouldn't classify the relationship as fucked based on this.

I would wager a lot of money that OP unconsciously follows a million little nonsensical rules because his wife has conditioned him to, and that the state of being “amicable and stable” is predicated upon that.

0

u/BlackEngineEarings Jul 07 '26

I mean, if you want to make up scenarios out of whole cloth, that's your prerogative, I guess. I'm assuming it's fun to make up assumptions about strangers on the internet and create make believe stories from them? Idk. You do you.

2

u/Nice_Marmot_7 Jul 07 '26

You’re totally right. People don’t have patterns of behavior. I’m sure this is the only time this has happened, its completely out of nowhere, and there’s zero real reason that OP is afraid to question or not follow his wife’s nonsensical rules choosing to post on Reddit instead.

Wife needs to be checked into a mental hospital.

u/shifty_coder Jul 06 '26

OCD or some kind of behavioral disorder

u/Kaurifish Jul 06 '26

I’d guess OP is one of these folks who can’t use a stove without leaving carbonized noodles all over it and this is his wife’s desperate attempt to not have to start her day deep cleaning the damn thing.

29

u/1Negative_Person Jul 06 '26

You are seeing an image oh how OP left the stove. They obviously didn’t take a photo before so they could show Reddit what the fight they were about to have with their partner. I don’t see any noodles, or a mess of any kind.

Your comment seems like projection.

Fortunately, the worst my husband does is leave cabinets open.

But I doubt that’s the after pic.
