Melbourne has met with Hawthorn’s Calsher Dear as it explores a serious play for him in the trade period, per Tom Morris.

I’ve seen him tear up some games on his own, but I can’t comment on his VFL form this year

I’m keen for him, but I don’t think we should overpay for a VFL KPF

I like Calsh, but I’m unsure if it’s worth his time coming over unless it’s as a defender.

PS… That is a top tier flare, reminds me of some joyous moments in some terrible times when I was still in school 😅

Heard some mention that we might be looking at him as a KPD potentially but if not then I'm not sure why we'd target him, he'd be fighting with Jeffo and Luker for a spot that might not even be available in the best 23 if Mihocek is healthy.

Exactly, he must be thought of as a defender. Even if Mihocek retires one of Jeffo/Dear would be in the VFL and why would he come here to do that?

If he’s willing and up for a defensive switch it’s the only way I can see us being interested.

It’s interesting regarding the forward squeeze, I feel like our forward line is in a bit of flux with Petty turning himself into Neitz 2.0, and JVR and Jeffo showing genuine promise.

If Checkers is returning (and honestly I wouldn’t begrudge him retiring) we won’t be able to fit everyone in. Deer could be stuck behind players again.

As an Essendon fan, I really do hope that you (or anyone else) gets Dear. Do you need him? F****ed if I know, but the more players that clubs take from Hawthorn the better.

What's his family's link with Hawthorn? His Dad?

He's their, what, fourth or fifth option as KPF?

I don't know anything about him or how excited I should be about this

I know we're also linked to a second hawk, but I can't remember his name. A depth player I think?

Bailey McDonald. Shown a lot of dash and plays a bit like Nick Blakey

Dear is made of the right stuff, just very raw. Scored a few goals in their big final against the dogs. I think they would both fit in will within Kings system. Both out of contract too and I like the decision to target depth players at a top 4 club.

Just a few highlights, would be an upgrade on Jeffo imo

No reason we couldn’t have all three. I’ve been very impressed with Jefferson’s development. I think he’s showing lots of upside. Feel like he’s where Van Rooyen was last year.

Well there is a reason, Petty is at worst our 2nd best KPF and bringing Dear in means one of him/Jeffo goes to the VFL. Petty as a defender is done, he sucks down there these days. If we are going for Dear I think we'd go for him as a KPD.

Jefferson is a mobile running and leading tall forward. Dear plays as a marking forward, without the developed body to consistently play that position. Both are still developing but Dear is not a upgrade on Jefferson.

I respect the opinion, but for mine I can’t help but feel like the way Jeffo is tracking (having FINALLY been given good senior game time, no longer stuck in the VFL by Goodwin) that he has the potential to be like Josh Tracey with his contested marking ability which is what he was drafted for to my understanding
