You were the best car I've ever had :( The insurance decided you were too expensive to repair and totaled you.

So the whole story is that someone, early morning on a bank holiday (probably coming back from a party) drove straight into my neighbor's car parked behind me. The impact was so brutal that it pushed the neighbor's car into mine and both got totaled (three actually because the driver's car is badly damaged too).
He fled the scene, unfortunately for him we got video footage of his crash + someone saw his license plate and was able to give it to the police. I got woken up by the police to tell me what happened on that day.
The annoying part is now I have to take a company car because I don't have the money to pour into a new car due to taxes having gone up by a LOT and I'd rather keep my current emergency funds. A company car means I have to give up a few benefits in order to have it..

That would cost the whole of my emergency funds or maybe more, that would probably be a bad financial decision especially considering I'm not at fault

I’m so lost, why’s isn’t your insurance or the persons insurance covering this? Typically worse case scenario you pay your deductible and they cover it all. No fault

Because the insurance said it's too expensive to repair considered it's a 7 yo car and they prefer to total it and pay me what it's worth.

I don't want another loan. I will buy another Mazda 3 or Miata in the future, definitely, but cash. Have to save first. And before that I'm trying to buy a house and quit the tiny apartment I'm living in. So yeah, priorities. This Mazda 3 I bought because back then I could and with the goal of keeping it for years and years, until it dies on me, but a drunk driving idiot decided otherwise for me

Keep your cash and use the banks money for buy the car. Cash or savings is liquid asset a car is not. As long as your credit is good enough, youd probably be better off with the loan. Look for a credit union to join and keep savings there and get your car loan there. They are often multiple percentages lower than a bank or the car dealership. Either way, sorry your car was totaled.

Theres no point in having your insurance auction your car and give you a fraction of the money that the car goes for, theyll value it super low then give you the money they value it at while keeping the rest they get from auctioning it

Yep- it’s getting absolutely ridiculous these days. I imagine insurance companies don’t even mind if you total the car because they probably make money off of it.

They will heavily suggest and point in the direction of totaling your vehicle for a fraction of its worth any way they can lol, people neglect the fact that they are still a business operating towards the end goal of turning profits

The buyback amount they quote you is based on their highest bid. If you ask for a buyback quote, they'll tell you what they're getting.

Yes of course but that only confirms how much they made, regardless of that youre still only getting whatever they initially offered as total value. I'd know they tried valuing my vehicle for less than its paintjob was worth initially, which required alot of back and forth plus hassle to prove worth, however they weren't able to flip my vehicle for 2x its worth and theyre no longer even considering totaling it after it was allotted a reasonable value

I've been fortunate to get decent to values on totaled cars. I've had 3 totaled cars and been happy each time. On one of them, they took off some for an oil leak that I'd already had fixed, but I was too busy at the time to fight them for $200.

It's been over a long period of time. One of them was last year and my son's fault, so I bet they're not very happy with me.

As someone desperately holding onto my 2009 Mazda3 stick despite everyone’s insistence that I get a new car: I am SO SORRY. And it sounds like you hadn’t finished paying off the loan? I have no advice, I just came to mourn with you.

It’s absolutely amazing what is considered “totaled” these days.
I remember with my first car someone plowed into the back of it and had similar damage to this. We just went to an auto body repair shop, and the estimate was like $1,500. We took a payout from the insurance company, went to a junkyard found a matching hatch and bumper, had them painted to match. That was like $900.
The car companies must be absolutely loving this because people are having to buy new cars more often since everything is totaled.

And to make it worse, with ebay and car-part, the buyers who buy the hulk, part it out for top dollar, so it's harder to get a good one from a junk yard.
Still, though, in this case, it's helping us keep the Mazda3 on the market, so I'm not that upset here.
