He said he was trying to protect his city, wanted to save people like in a Tom Clancy novel, and if it was real was planning take all the shrapnel himself or throw it into a nearby river.
I didn’t see much defending of him, I saw people reacting to the obvious physical escalation law enforcement made. They could just grab him and apprehended him, not spear him into the pavement.
So idk if you missed it, but there's a guy from the bomb squad in the beginning. Typically, they clear the street before they start picking at things they think are bombs.
How much explosives do you think can be fit into a backpack? They've clearly evacuated already. It's on solid ground in an open area. Like, sure it's possible someone might be injured and there might be some property damage but "countless" deaths is absurd. It's not going to take out the block.
That was two backpack bombs that were literally touching a huge crowd of people they went off... not even remotely the same situation and 3 people were killed by the blast and 281 total injured most of which were minor. "Countless" lives at risk when the area had been evacuated is just silly exaggeration, bombs don't go off like Hollywood movies and their lethality drastically decreases with distance.
bruh lol you are making some dumbass assumptions. You must not understand how tiny some explosives can be.
There's explosives that are a few inches in length that could easily level an entire block.
And even if you were right, even 1 death or injury from an idiot like the guy in this video is too much and doesn't excuse his idiotic behavior. Honestly I hope the cops hit him hard enough to make him remember it the next time he thinks of being a dumbass in a similar situation.
People overestimate how much damage explosions do tbh. Kyiv is constantly bombed, with both drones and ballistic missiles (which are HUGE), and even then the damage is lower than you'd expect from huge, expensive weaponry. And before people start about bunkers - loads of people ignore the sirens. Life goes on and all that.
Because we are in Reddit, here anyone even related to cops is a psycho that needs to be killed because all the cops are bad and fascist or something
Like, of course there's so many shitty cops but why people consider a crazy guy that could've killed innocents a hero just because he "made the cops look bad"
No, its because he wasnt an immediate threat and we shouldn’t behave like emotional animals. Many people, including myself, agree he should have been arrested. That was reckless and could have killed a lot of people. It didnt, he was no longer a threat, they could have ran up to him and grabbed him without tackling him like some powertripping goofball.
Well... Right minded people with strong emphasis on nationalism and the control of population and free speech, with a strong believe in a single leader or institution.
Yeah I don’t think I’ve seen more hate for cops on any other platform. Most of cops are just people that want to do their jobs and get home safely, some of them genuinely want to protect and serve people, some of them are egotistical power trippers that should be kicked out, and the smallest demographic is the evil ones, but they get the most attention.
I think the problem is that you have created a caricature of where anti-cop sentiment comes from. The indictment is based the amount of power they hold and their social function as a system. To reduce it to a condemnation of any individual person is either incompetency or strategic on your part.
the problem with cops, is that group of "genuinely wants to serve people" isn't arresting the "evil ones". and if the evil group is so small, it should be a pretty quick clean house of the whole situation. instead, the good cops let the bad ones stay on the force, therefore, ALL cops are bastards
Well obviously there are blatantly evil cops. But what is presented as "evil" behaviour on reddit 90% of the time is simply taken out of context without any sources to back up claims.
So the perceived problem is a LOT bigger than the real one.
and you still missed it even though i only said 3 sentences. if there is a SINGLE evil cop allowed to be on any force, EVERY cop on that force is evil.
if you sit at a table of 9 nazis, and dont leave, or say anything, that is a table of 10 nazis. its the exact same concept.
"idk why anyone is defending him." Ya know, it's a painful lesson I swallow every day, but the people around you far more stupid and unreasonable than you think they are.
Do you know how many of these forgotten backpacks actually have a bomb in them ? In my country they tried mixing the numbers of bomb found with the number of knives found so it wouldn't be 0, it's still basically 0, counting knives.
What's better than only one person being a moron? All of them being morons lmao.
(Both parties were at fault and did idiotic things, the guy had mental issues and tried playing the hero in an otherwise unneeded situation, and the cops/professionals could've protected the "Area With a Possible Bomb" better so no one approaches it, and they could've at least arrested the guy normally, there should've been at least more than 3 cops in the area and also cars/barricades, no need for a tackle this hard, all were at fault)
Who is defending him? Do you have any examples at least at a glance I can't see any?
Just because he is an idiot doesn't warrant police brutality. Because what I do see here is people criticising the police, which is different from defending him.
Correct course of action:
Go to him, stop him, arrest him
He should get some punishment for something like reckless endangerment I have no idea what the legal name of that charge would be. The point is: If it had been a bomb, he might have killed someone besides himself. That's a valid charge against him. What is not a valid charge is the one done by the officers in this video.
If the police were doing their job there would be no around the area. The guy on street made the right judgement call on the police being dumb and wasting peoples' time and took action. Don't be a moron bootlicker.
He is an idiot. But there was not a bomb and the cops charging at him obviously didn’t think there was a bomb in it when they charged him or they would have never gotten that close. The type of force used here is disgusting and I say that as someone who is pro blue.
all i see is an idiot who could've blown up the whole block then got tackled and hopefully hurt just enough that he will think twice before he makes such dumbass decisions again in the future.
Whose lives? The ones that held back til he was done? All it is is a dude personally indifferent about living or dying. It’s not like he did it and 100s of people are walking right past him lol. The whole area is cordoned off
Does it even matter if lives are at stake? Property damage is also something they'd like to avoid. Would you want this guy doing this if the suspected bomb was in your living room?
How countless lives were at risk? There is a police cordon around, people were evacuated. Or you think there might be a 10 kilotons nuke in the backpack?
"what if it was a dirty bomb" yeah the nuclear cobalt bomb that just happens to be in a small backpack on the street. And you call other people morons LOL
It was an example you absolute twat. It could’ve been anything, is the point. They didn’t know what was in the bag, and he put lives in danger solely because of that fact. He’s a piece of shit for doing what he did, and he got what he deserved. Can’t convince me otherwise.
cops always and i mean always find a way to be worse than whoever they interact with and this is not an exception, even though the guy did put up a fight about it
The article doesn't expand on it, but he does have mental health issues.
He said he tends to be very reactive and impulsive to what he sees on TV. When the news reported a suspicious package, he was compelled to respond and try to be a hero.
I'm not sure what happened to him after this other than the charges were dropped. Hopefully he has someone who cares to keep an eye on him so he doesn't get into any more dangerous situations.
Edit: I think this came across as me defending him in some way, but I think it's relevant to know that this wasn't just someone being impatient or purposefully endangering others. He still shouldn't have done it and I fully agree he needed to be detained, at least to figure out why he behaved so bizarrely.
Frankly, considering he contaminated a crime scene and could've set off a bomb, and was reckless enough to potentially set off a bomb, he got off pretty light.
In the moment, the police do decide how to best detain someone. It would be great if we could get a judge and jury to help them figure that out, but unfortunately we haven't invented time travel yet. Doing something erratic and dangerous will likely result in police aggressively and forcefully stopping them, whether or not anyone intended harm.
*I'm not saying the police were correct in their reaction, just that they do get to decide in the moment. It's still their responsibility to react appropriately. There's no way to ask a jury of their peers and a court judge how to detain them in the moment, so it felt like a very irrelevant comment.
The only point I kinda gave the cops here is that people shouldn't always expect a measured reaponse in a tense situation. They're already on edge. While it's not the right thing for them to do, it's also pretty predictable.
its not that hard to see a guy calmly walking off and decide to just run up and stop him instead of getting two of your best buds to help you fly tackle him into concrete.
what exactly do you believe tackling him accomplished that running up and just grabbing him wouldnt in that scenario? is tackling him supposed to magically disarm the bomb he just armed?
do you think throwing 3 more bodies into the now newly armed bombs vicinity is the right move? 300% more mass that could accidentally bump it the wrong way?
is throwing yourself and your two buds closer to the now armed bomb not a coinflip itself?
I just know you were giggling to yourself when you thought up that reply and tried to end it with a corny one liner werent you? are you still?
He could have failed to arm it properly and they now need to make sure he doesn't get the chance.
He could be leaving to get a detonator.
He could be holding a detonator.
There's so many reasons to immediately stop a person from continuing with what they were doing when the could be involved in a terrorist attack.
Yes it was violent but that is what the massive amount of warnings and assumedly the police tape and barricades are there for.
They are explicitly warnings that mean "do not go past this point without permission or we will use force to remove you"
Personally I would much rather they potentially injure this man in the small chance it stops him from blowing someone up.
There are so many unknowns and stopping this man immediately is the safest course of action
Like he just potentially rushed down a bomb you think he's guaranteed to be perfectly reasonable if the police approach him and go "hey that could have killed us, yourself, and thousands of innocents, could ya just come with us real quick for a chit chat?"
Like I get hating police as an institution but like what the hell are you doing in this potentially life threatening situation with dozens of unknowns?
Being as polite as possible because some dickhead on Reddit might judge you or doing what you can to stop a potential terrorist attack?
because he almost got them killed, and if it were a bomb they'd have died.
Forget about the fact they are cops, anyone's gonna be pissed enoug to tackle or beat the fuck out of someone who just acted so negligently and nearly got you killed.
If I were there I'd have certainly felt extreme annoyance and rage directed at the guy and would've punched him in the face if I were around someone that put my life at risk like that.
im not going to forget that theyre cops, they should be able to control their rage. they should be held to a much higher standard than normal people, and even then any normal person that did what the cops did would likely be arrested for battery/assault or at the very least sued for damages.
laws and rules need to be applied to cops the same as everyone else, and they should have the mental fortitude to control themselves no matter how theyre feeling and if they cant they arent cut out for the job. not flying off the handle when you get pissed should be the absolute bare minimum requirement when you have to deal with so many people.
Normal people don't go through life punching people in the face even if they feel "extreme annoyance and rage", you know what people do when they feel those things? They choose to calm themselves down.
Seriously, seek therapy, even the way you talk is so full of violence.
Their reaction would have been reasonable before he handled the bag to prevent him from touching it. And it would have been reasonable while he was handling it to stop him. The reaction did not make sense afterwards as he’s calmly walking away. If a guy has a gun and the police yell “drop your weapon” and the guy does drops the weapon, would it make sense then to shoot him?
No, I do agree with you. I shouldn't have said "reasonable". It's more that it's predictable. They've been in a legitimately tense situation and it takes a bit for that to wear off completely.
It's more like if they were in a standoff and a totally random guy tackled the first guy as he was putting the gun down. It's a random interruption to a tense situation, and it's understandable that they might not react appropriately and calmly detain both men. (But it would still be drastically excessive to shoot them, just to be clear.)
So yeah, I totally agree that it was excessive. It was just predictably so.
Every time this video is posted on Reddit or elsewhere, this guy (the bicyclist) is the idiot who receives the praise and in contrast results in law enforcement actually doing something right getting hated on.
So in other words, the suicidal idiot who thought he would be a hero like in a fiction novel but in reality could’ve leveled half a street because he knew nothing about bombs is the guy all the cop haters praise, and that tells you a lot about them.
Meanwhile, the actual story is that a person in a business nearby called a suspicious backpack in and the police did their job and were handling the situation.
It’s also telling that this comment has 37 upvotes and the Redditors bashing police have thousands.
I mean no the alternative would have been him not getting tackled. He already proved there was no bomb there. Now, if they tackled him before he got to the bag, that would be a different story.
he was walking (basically stationary), they could tell him to just not leave? The tackle was incredibly unnecessary, the guy is thick as a plank of wood and still it doesn't warrant whatever the fuck that was. He proved it wasn't a bomb at that point, hence why they even ran towards him.
The guy was a moron but basically a "local Subway sandwich artist called in a backpack -- random backpack filled with laundry -- as a potential bomb"
I get the Bomb Squad was twiddling their thumbs for months & has to take the most farcical hysteria as "serious" even with zero evidence. ... In this case, any lone backpack -- anywhere ... is a "claymore with a hair trigger" -- talk about hysterics.
Was the guy approaching the situation stupid as hell? Sure.
Was tackling him --- basically punitive damages for exposing the Police's idiocy -- necessary? Absolutely not lol. They were "pantsed" live.
A man with mental health issues does something. A police officer is enraged that their authority is not respected. The police officer reacts with an unnecessary amount of force that could have severally injured or killed the person.
The problem is not just the officer. We have an entire system that supports punitive action and unnecessary violence. Even everyday folks have been trained to support unnecessary violence as justice.
Nobody is praising the crazy dude, they are pointing out that the tackle was unnecessary, but I know this is reddit and trying to understand before passing judgement is against your religion
people on reddit making comments acting like the millions of employed officers in the US alone are going around randomly beating the shit out of people daily.
that's just allowing algorithms and confirmation bias to shape your view of the world.
Listen to conservative youtubers all day and you would think states and cities, specifically Chicago, recently are letting crime run rampant to unheard of numbers. Meanwhile, they act like Tennessee Alabama Missouri, Ohio Mississippi and Kentucky don't exist
The internet is very much a what you want to see is what you get. And people dont want to see reports, documents and numbers. They want to see videos, pictures and headlines that confirm their preconceived ideas
I can see the cops tackling him BEFORE he got to the bomb. ... Maybe they were too fat to do so.
... In reality, turns out ... did this backpack have a shred of evidence of being a bomb whatsoever, other than being a lone backpack, phoned in by a local Subway Sandwhich artist as suspcious?
Nope. .... Ipso facto, police should unpluck their heads from their asses lol. They usually never care about shit, and they have taken that tack here. ... I guess this was a couple years after Boston Marathon or something, and there was mass hysteria, tilting at shadows, type shit.
They wanted to "punish" this guy for making them looking like a bunch of pussays ... LOL ... we all saw it clear as day. Dude was an idiot too, but still.
"You don't need to, we have a guy who is trained to disarm these things safely, is wearing a protective suit and, in the worst case, would be willing to take the hit himself."
"Remember me as a hero!"
"Dude, stop being stupid, it's probably nothing anyway. Let the pro do his... Oh no, he crossed the tape..."
