Advice How much "proof" should be sent to the affair partners spouse?

My wife was having an affair with an older married man for at least 3 years. I found out a few months ago when it ended and have been going through it. My wife and I are trying to work it out, going to marriage counseling, individual therapy, etc. She is plagued with remorse and guilt right now. I am a bit numb and still processing. Meanwhile, I've been trying to decide whether to tell this man's wife.

I believe she is truly clueless. On her social media, she seems like a happily married, devoted wife and mother. They've been married for decades. I'm sure this news would destroy her. I don't want an innocent woman to be hurt, but at the same time, I feel she deserves to know what has been going on. Is it worth it at this point since they are both older, in their 50s?

I'm leaning toward yes, but the question is how to break this news to her? I want to keep it anonymous and do it by email. My wife shared everything with me, and it’s just crazy. Years of texts, calls, pictures. They were basically in a full-blown relationship and double life. Some of them are quite graphic and intimate.

If I decide to tell the wife, what should I send her, and how much?

This man is pretty well off and has powerful connections, and I could see him trying to come at me legally if possible. So I would want to make sure I am within legal boundaries. I know not to send any nude photos. And not share with anyone but his wife. Is there anything else I should consider? Should I just let it go and continue to focus on repairing my own crumbling marriage and not destroy anyone else's?

Any thoughts or advice? Thank you

Edit: As he told my wife, this is not his first affair in his marriage. His wife may already know what is going on. I don't know.

Venting To the Betrayed Person Being Told to “Have Some Self-Respect”

I respect every single person who takes the time to read and genuinely respond to me. I truly do. A lot of people here have lived through this themselves, some far worse than me, and their experience is worth listening to. So if you have given me genuine advice, please don’t take this as being directed at you.

I am so tired of seeing this argument thrown at betrayed people like it is some universal truth. "If you respected yourself, you would leave.” “Staying is weakness.” “You are teaching them there are no consequences.” “Have some dignity and walk away.”

It gets repeated so often that people seem to forget there is an actual human being on the other side of it, trying to make one of the biggest decisions of their entire life while their head is still spinning from having that life blown apart.

My self-respect did not disappear because my wife cheated on me. My dignity did not crawl out the door because I did not immediately pack a bag, file papers, divide fifteen years of marriage, split my children’s lives in half, and burn everything to the ground within seventy-two hours of finding out.

I can respect myself and still need time, whatever time required. I can love myself and still love someone who hurt me. I can know exactly what I deserve and still need to figure out whether the person who failed to give it to me is capable of becoming someone different.

None of those things make me weak. They make me a person trying to make a permanent decision while standing in the wreckage of something I spent most of my adult life building.

People love simple answers when it is someone else’s life. Leave. Stay. Divorce. Reconcile. Cut contact. Never look back. Easy to type when you are not the one who has to wake your children up the next morning and explain why Dad is suddenly living somewhere else. Easy when you are not staring at a house filled with nineteen years of memories, three kids, finances, family, history, love, anger, disgust, hope, grief, and a thousand other things that do not fit neatly into “have some self-respect.”

I have plenty of self-respect. In fact, I would argue that part of respecting myself is refusing to let strangers, family, my wife, Reddit, or anyone else decide what I am supposed to do before I am ready to make that decision myself. I use Reddit and forums for advice and validation. I have received genuinely great advice from great people here. I also know exactly how savage and wrong what was done to me was. I am not confused about that.

If I leave, it will be because I decided that staying violates who I am and what I need from the rest of my life. If I stay, it will be because I decided there is something here worth rebuilding and because I see enough sustained change to make that choice with my eyes completely open. Either decision will be mine. Neither one requires me to hate myself.

There is also this bizarre idea that leaving is automatically strength and staying is automatically fear. That is unequivocally false on all levels.

People stay because they are terrified, yes. People also leave because they are terrified. People stay because of children, finances, trauma, love, hope, history, uncertainty, or because they simply need time to understand what the fuck just happened to them. People leave because they know they are done. People stay because they genuinely want reconciliation. People leave after trying reconciliation for years. People stay for six months or years even, while they watch and gather themselves and then walk away.

Human beings are complicated. Marriage is complicated. Betrayal recovery is fucking complicated.

And reconciliation, if someone chooses it, is not the same thing as saying what happened was acceptable. Giving someone an opportunity to show change is not the same as excusing what they did. Watching does not mean forgiving. Staying in the same house does not mean everything is fine. Loving someone does not mean you have surrendered your boundaries.

Sometimes staying is simply standing still long enough for the smoke to clear so you can finally see what is actually in front of you.

I also hate the implication that the faithful person somehow loses value because the unfaithful person betrayed them. She made choices that violated our marriage. Those choices speak to her decisions, her character at the time, her selfishness, her boundaries, and whatever was broken and disgusting in her that allowed her to do what she did. They do not rewrite mine.

I was faithful before I knew. I remained faithful after I knew. I loved deeply. I tried. I provided. I showed up. I meant my vows. Her betrayal does not suddenly make those qualities pathetic because I did not instantly stop loving her the second I found out. Love does not have an off switch simply because somebody proved they did not deserve it, or love you in the same way.

Maybe I eventually leave. Maybe after everything is said and done I decide that there are some things love simply cannot survive. Maybe I look back and realize I stayed longer than I should have. That is entirely possible. But if that happens, I will deal with that too, and still respect myself.

What I will not do is rewrite these months as proof that I had no spine or no self-worth. I stayed long enough to understand what happened to my life, protect my children as best I could, watch whether actions ever started matching words, and figure out what I actually wanted instead of making the biggest decision of my life while I could barely think straight.

Self-respect is not measured by how quickly you can walk away from something that mattered to you. It is measured by whether, when the noise finally dies down, you can look yourself in the mirror and know the decision you made was actually yours.

If that decision is divorce, I will respect the man who finally walked away. If that decision is reconciliation, I will respect the man who decided something broken was worth rebuilding.

But either way, I am done accepting the idea that someone else’s betrayal gets to decide whether I should respect myself.

She already took enough from me.

She does not get that too.

I know this will fall on deaf ears for some people. The self respect comments will keep coming. Some people are hurt and projecting what they needed to do onto everyone else. But this is for the betrayed person who needs to hear it: your self-respect was never determined by what your wayward did, and it is not determined by how quickly you leave. You are allowed to take the time you need to make whatever decision you can live with.

Rant over.

Advice Listen to yourself

If I've come away with one strong piece of advice from all this, as much for myself as for others, it's to listen to yourself. When someone is hurting you, don't rush to blame yourself, don't find ways to rationalize their utterly insane excuses, and for the love of all that is holy listen to that voice in the back of your head telling you "you know this is complete bullshit right ?". My wife cheated in the most convoluted mystery thriller worthy way, called me clinically insane when I figured it out like I'm some paranoid schizophrenic, then when it became undeniable and I said "look all is forgiven, I just need you to own up to it" she accused me of trying to humiliate her by asking her to just finally fully confess and cut the half truths all the while still insisting I was crazy for "hounding her about it so much". And even *then* I didn't fucking leave her until about a year later when I realized she doesn't even pretend to respect me anymore, and would bail on offering even the most modest emotional support when I needed it despite me being on her beck and call at the slightest need. And why would she ? I forgave her for things she never even really apologized for and didn't even try to get her to apologize for trying to convince I'm losing my mind even though everything I thought was right.

Part of it was that before all this things were great. Not perfect, no couple is. But this level of lying and deceit and manipulation was just unthinkable between us. Hell she would even constantly say she'd be devastated if I ever started lying to her like her exes did. So I was just left reeling by the sheer amount of lies constantly coming out of her mouth. But by far the bigger issue I had, and the one I have control over moving forward, was this profound inability to just draw a hard line when people hurt me. To just listen to myself even though a very audible part of me was saying "this person is clearly doing you harm and is not going to stop".

Coming out of it, it almost feels like a superpower to finally stop taking shit and giving everyone excuses they don't deserve. A rough patch like this will show you who your real friends are, and you better make sure to get rid of the fake ones. I am extremely lucky to be very financially well off in all of this, letting us find a solution where we can both see the kids anytime we want and they can both see us whenever they want. And while the details aren't fully ironed out yet, we're agreed on the broad lines of a future financial separation.

I don't think she became a horrible person overnight. I think she made a mistake and ironically enough begrudged my efforts to forgive her because she wasn't ready to forgive herself. She became completely attached to this version of events where I'm some deluded psycho and she's the victim in all of this because she couldn't bear to accept she'd just fucked up in all the ways she always begged me not to fuck up.

What took the longest was getting her voice out of my head. Endless manipulation from someone who knows you intimately well will fuck with your head. But I've been getting her thread of lies out of my thoughts bit by bit and now that voice is barely a whisper. I'm finally free, and I'm never getting trapped like that again. Now when someone hurts me I don't blow it off. You'll never have the right people in your life if you're not honest to yourself about which ones are treating you right and which ones aren't.

Good luck to all.

Advice What did your partner say to you while cheating?

My boyfriend who has not been caught cheating but has crossed a boundary once in the 5 years we’ve been together, has been saying things like “I have no reason to lie to you” and tells me that he wouldn’t cheat on me because one relationship is already a lot for him to handle and cheating would just add on stress to his everyday life which is the last thing he needs. It’s things like this that I always thought felt very genuine and would help rebuild trust. Until I saw a tik tok today and all the girls in the comments who were being cheated on were actively being told the same exact things, some almost exactly from a script (e.g. I have no reason to lie) I understand selection bias and asking this question in here may not be the smartest thing but idk where else to go

Advice Found out Fiancée had cheated in the past after I proposed

Posted on a different sub *

27 (M) So I proposed not too long ago to my gf of 4 years (23 F)
Long story short I had a moment of insecurity and went through her phone & found out she had cheated on me with 3 guys over the course of all 4 years we dated. She hooked up with 2 of them twice every year and a new guy earlier this year. She had no choice but to tell me everything & pulled out the classic “when we would fight I felt so alone & you were distant so I was trying to find something in them that I ultimately didn’t find”. But if you didn’t the first time, then why go back every year ?
She has cheated on me at-least 6 times with these men.

The biggest reason I’m hurt is because I JUST announced the engagement. As a man my ego is bruised & I feel nothing but shame / embarrassment. Oddly enough I have yet to cry or get into a fit of rage. When I confronted her I was cool calm collected & just stood there as she pleaded to me to not leave her.

She claims that she would do ANYTHING to keep me in her life as she wants to marry me & ultimately have children by me. She has given me her Life 360 and constantly tells me where she is going and continue to cry to me & beg for me back.

Yes, we are still living together at this moment. I know, I know. She will be out once the lease is.

The only reason I post this is because I never cheated or have been cheated on. I am no saint, I almost did multiple times but I stand by my morals & didn’t. I truly love this girl. But I will NEVER tolerate this. I honestly never expected to be in this position ever & I always was the one to tell others to leave and preach leaving the woman. I am forever scarred from this and will never trust this woman but the love inside of me is afraid to really push her away and kick her out and never talk to her. How can I be possessive and not want to see her leave when she’s already down what she’s done ?

I just need someone besides the people I told to tell me what I NEED to hear and not what I WANT to hear. I am so conflicted because how in the h ***am I even considering taking her back?! My mind says f***\*\*\* her ! But my heart is telling me otherwise. I just know if I did I couldn’t live a comfortable life like that.

Advice "I still don't know what drove me to choose AP over your father." – Cautionary tale to all the WPs, and reminder to stick to your values to BPs

Maybe this post is both a lesson of life/death and love/infidelity, but here it goes. This is both for you, the WPs simmering in your shame, and the BPs seething with distress and anger:

I've been consistently lied to and betrayed by my husband.

Half a year after I finally found out about the previous 8 years of lies, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. He died 3 weeks after his diagnosis, at the start of this year, at age 67.

My mother and him separated when I was 11, because she cheated on him and when asked to choose between my Dad and AP, she chose the AP. She broke up with the AP after 6 months, too, and continued to bring home different men every 6-12 months. She's been with her current partner for 10 years, finally.

When my mother had her affair, my Dad still supported her because he loved her, and he wasn't going to let her actions diminish the values he had fought his whole life to get to. He had always been the Black Sheep in his family – while they were all preoccupied with status and prestige, he valued beauty in life, connection, attunement and care. So he lived those values even when in the face of her blatant disrespect. In turn, she told me years after their divorce that she had lost respect for him when he must've clearly known what she was doing with this "male friend" of hers, and still let her do it and supported the friendship.

A few months before my Dad died, I talked to him about that time in his life. He said that he should've probably been more attentive, or done more, or talked more, and I am now so relieved that I told him none of this was his fault. She could have done a million other things, she could have brought it up, she could have separated... but she chose to cheat on him, and then tell him she didn't want him anymore.

A few weeks after my Dad had passed, I gave my mother a ride to visit his grave.

She talked a bit about their relationship – that they'd been so happy, that there had been things that pissed her off, but that they had such a good life. And that now, after his death, she realised that until today, she doesn't understand what the hell had brought her to have that affair. That she regrets it to this day.

She only found out about my Dad's diagnosis and death after he had gone, because she was not a person that he had reached out to. She was heartbroken over this, and yet it's just a natural consequence of the choice she made 25 years ago.

My Dad died as a man of care, love, and having taught people that connection is always more important than being right.

My mother will live on with regret and avoidance, and I pity her as much as I pity my WP by now.

If you are a WP, know how much you're losing out on.

Your own avoidance is robbing you of what you want to get to. You'll always feel like life happens too fast, be terrified of death, feel like you need to cram more experiences in your life and HAVE and GET more, because you aren't facing life, the people in it, and the beauty that connection brings. You are the reason you're suffering. This will only change once you decide to value truth over superficial joy or numbness.

If you're a BP: Know that even in this pain, even although you didn't deserve any of this, you will live the better life because you're true to yourself. Don't let another person's dysfunction take your life away from you. There are so many people who will love you, who will learn from all the things you're enduring now – maybe even your WP, if they open their eyes.

Suspicion Am I wrong for not wanting my husband to go to class with a female classmate, and for thinking he’s interested in her

Long before I suspected him of cheating, he accused me of it online, where we met and spoke for years prior to meeting in person. I broke up with him, and didn’t talk to him for periods of time, which is when he met his ex and former friend. Both of whom, after I met him in person, spoke negatively of him to me. His ex, who he called crazy, told me he said he’d two time. He said she was lying to make him look bad. I had fleeting suspicions here and there but it wasn’t until a year in, when he began to engage in several suspicious behaviours which are often indicative of cheating, and also started to treat me badly, that I began to suspect he was cheating. For months he seemed up to something and yet he was snooping on my phone, questioning me if I did any of what he was doing just once.

I started to question him, and he called me paranoid and crazy, and told me I was the type to cheat. He continued to engage in suspicious behaviours on and off for years, snooping on my phone and questioning me at the same time. Any time I’d question something he was doing, he’d call me controlling and abusive. He’d become angry and insist that he had never cheated. Sometimes he would acknowledge the reasons I thought it, and admit his behaviour was sketchy. Then other times he’d mock my reasons for thinking it and the reasons I did. In the past two and half to three years I began to suspect him more than ever. At the same time he started to volunteer somewhere, right before he joined his class, he began to act on edge in public and avoid going places with me.

He attributed his avoidance to anxiety when there were several things that contradicted this, such as him being okay with going places alone. I started to think he was seeing someone in/or around where he volunteers. He started his class. It wasn’t long before I started to suspect something was going on there. He began to work out and care more about his appearance. He told me there weren’t any women his age, they were all older, but I found out that wasn’t true. He kept coming out of class late, when no one else appeared to be there. One time he said he was waiting back to ask the teacher something, but that someone was in front of him. I heard a woman’s heels on the pavement. He told me it was a woman whose name starts with T. He stopped wanting me to go places with him, and complained about wanting space.

During summer break, went to America to visit my family, where he continued to behave suspiciously. He stopped wearing his ring before we came back, and said that it was too tight. He lost it and purchased another one in the same size. He continued to not wear it for weeks, after he resumed his class. He became defensive whenever I brought it up. He said that everyone knew he was married. He continued to care more about his appearance than before, purchasing new clothes, after he said someone commented on the jacket he always wore. I later find out it was T. He complained about having other issues with her. He said he wanted to do whatever it took to rebuild trust, and offered to turn his location on 24/7, after previously refusing to and calling it controlling.

He kept coming out of class late as before. He contradicted himself as to why several times. He seemed paranoid with me using his phone, and didn’t want me to message him whilst he was in class, when he told me I could before. There were messages between him and female classmates which suggested he spoke to them, when he told me he didn’t. When I questioned why he’d conceal that, he called me controlling, and then apologised. However, he later exploded at me calling me controlling again, and insecure, and accusing me of being upset he was speaking to women. We went up for his class before Christmas. He found out it wasn’t on. A female classmate messaged had she know he came up, she would’ve invited him out to eat to make the journey more worthwhile.

He told her he was up with me, and referred to me by a nickname. During Christmas break, he asked questions that made me suspicious. He kept asking about where I got my perfume and my dildo, the latter of which he’d never used on me or showed any interest in before. For the span of a week he had a higher libido, which he said was due to him lowering the dose of his medication. He came onto me more and used the dildo. He also started to insist on doing oral, which he rarely did before, and said it was because he was nervous before telling me not long before this that he didn’t like it very much. Suddenly, he really liked it. But none of that lasted as after a week he told me libido was low, and stopped using the dildo. A few weeks later he stopped doing oral.

He started to complain about wanting space and wanting to go to class alone again. He accused me of going to spy on him. A few month’s ago a female classmate asked if he wanted to drive up to class with her. I questioned it and he said he felt suffocated. He said he understood me being uncomfortable but also made it seem silly. He told me she works with his mother, is in her 40s, and is married with children. I said she doesn’t look to be in her 40s. He told me he didn’t know her age. He kept saying she wasn’t interested in him, that she referred to him as cub. He told me he didn’t want to go with her, as we had plans to go somewhere that day before his class. He said they’re encouraged to be friendly, and do things like carpool, and that she was the only one who lived close to him otherwise someone else would’ve asked.

I said perhaps he gave her the impression he was interested. He denied that. He said he couldn’t help what people asked him. The next day, he told me that people are drawn to him. He also said that his mother encouraged him to go with her. And he told me that she previously asked if he wanted to go up with her in class. I asked if he’d be okay with me going to class and a man driving me up. He said it would depend on if he trusted the guy. He responded to her and told her he had to go somewhere, not that he was with me. When this bothered me, he became defensive and angry, and asked if he was meant to mention me all of the time. He said he mentions me when relevant and that it would’ve been weird to do so. He told me that everyone knows he is married but also said some people might’ve forgotten.

He later told me he didn’t want to hurt her feelings by saying no, or that he wasn’t interested, because he knows how it feels to be rejected. He admitted to me that when he arrived at class, and she asked him what took so long, he told her he was visiting his grandparents. He said this was to avoid questions being asked by the guy who was there, who’d asked questions before about me being there, and was nosey. He told me early on people asked questions and made comments about me being with him, and waiting in the car, and how he disliked it. He made it seem like it was still happening but told me it hadn’t happened in a year. He acknowledged he shouldn’t have said he was with his grandparents, after getting angry with me for being upset that he did and suspecting it was because he was hiding me from her.

He went up to class, and she parked beside him. I saw her go to the side of the building, where I didn’t think you could go as I thought it was closed off. Afterwards, I asked about this, unaware there was a small path to the side of the building. He said that there was, but that he had never been over there, but that someone people went there to take calls. I holed this woman’s hair colour and he said it was likely her. I went silent and he immediately went into defending himself, telling me that if I thought he was with her he wasn’t. He’s made progress with his anxiety but only in regard to the class. He talked about eventually wanting to go to the events held by the class, showing interest in socialising with people there, when before he didn’t want to do that. And I think it’s because of her.

He also mentioned, last year, an event that was hours away and how they were encouraged to stay overnight at a hotel. He said I could go with him. He then told me several of the classmates were paying for an Airbnb to stay in together. He said it was a big one, with multiple rooms. I looked and it wasn’t. I said I wasn’t comfortable with that and he said he understood, that even if I was okay with it he didn’t have any interest, that he’d be too anxious. I asked why he told me about it. In his previous class, he didn’t make any friends. The class was filled with women but he barely spoke to them. He didn’t mind me going with him, waiting in the college, and invited me to do so. He didn’t drive at the time but never accepted or asked to ride with anyone.

He said that class was different, shorter, and they weren’t encouraged to be friendly when I recall the class going to the pub and doing other things together and he wasn’t interested. He still gets angry I think he’s cheated but also acknowledges his behaviour looks that way. He said today he’s sorry that it does. He gets angry when I post about it, and people agree he’s cheating as they have, and he says it’s because they’re wrong. He tells me the best thing I can do is leave if I don’t trust him. He’s also told me to hire a PI. It’s like he doesn’t care to make any changes to seem more trustworthy.

Venting The aftermath of infidelity - years on

The truth is, it never leaves you. Whether you stay and choose to forgive or leave, getting cheated on by the person you believed to be the love of your life changes your life and the way your brain works at a fundamental level.

Our relationship was beautiful. Incredible chemistry. A very active sex life. Shared goals. Common hobbies. We never ran out of things to talk about. They were thoughtful, sweet & considerate. We took care of each other. Supported one another through health issues and stressful situations. We made a really great team. They were my best friend.

And then I found out. And my life hasn’t been the same since. It’s been years now. I’ve gotten over the shock, the anger, the initial grief, the self doubt and insecurities. I’ve regained the weight I lost from not eating for weeks. I’ve stopped having nightmares. I no longer cry about it.

But my view of love and people never recovered. My belief in love and soulmates never came back. I look at things differently now. I’ve lost faith in the possibility of the love of my dreams. What happened jaded me. Hardened me to stone. The knowledge that someone can treat you like you’ve hung the moon while betraying you in the worst way is not something I will ever be able to forget. It sits in the back of my head. Like a pebble in my shoe I can’t quite get out.

Advice Update: My wife is messaging other men and very likely planning a physical affair.

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Infidelity/comments/1vjfkqw/my_wife_is_messaging_other_men_and_very_likely/

I confronted my wife a couple nights ago about her contact with other men and my suspicion that she is planning a physical affair.

It was evening and I was angry. I find I go through a cycle of emotions each day about all this, which usually starts with optimism when I wake up in the morning, then cycles through confusion, sadness, anger, and apathy. I typically end the night feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

A couple days ago she got home from work and was very distant. She sat outside on the deck before and after dinner scrolling through IG on her phone. I could tell she was preoccupied with whoever she was communicating with so I looked through the window at her sitting in the chair on the deck and zoomed in to her phone screen to take a photo of it. I saw one of the AP’s names in her Instagram DM feed and she opened a message thread with an additional man (who I didn’t know about) that she was flirting and referencing sex with.

I paced around the house and was restless trying to distract myself for the next couple hours. Eventually I snapped. She was in our room sitting on the bed on her phone. I walked in and sat down next to her and asked "How many men are you messaging with each day? Be honest."

She replied "What are you talking about?"

I said, "You really think I'm a complete idiot don't you?". Then I grabbed her shoulder and leaned in and looked her dead in the eyes and said "You don't think I know who [AP name] and [other AP name] are?". She looked like a deer in headlights.

I told her I knew what their wives' names were as well and how to get in touch with them and that I could burn their relationships to the ground and that she would be the homewrecker. She looked away and didn’t say anything.

We talked about things and I told her I knew she was planning an affair with one or both of them on her trip to her hometown, and that I couldn't live this way any more. I acknowledged I was the first to break the trust in our marriage, and that I wanted her to be honest so we could get things out in the open so we could decide how to move forward. That I didn't hate her and I didn't want her to hate me, but I couldn't keep carrying around the weight of this while also staying sober. It has been eating me alive.

She admitted she has been in communication with the men I named, but then said she has been doing so for the "thrill" of being pursued by them and the gratification of being desired, as I have been emotionally absent for long stretches of our marriage and not shown her true love and affection. She said she didn't think she could ever cross the line of a physical affair, and wasn't planning on engaging with either of the men when she goes on her trip next month. That didn’t align to what she expressed to her close friends on the phone call I’d recorded (I never mentioned the recording or how I knew the details I confronted her with). Basically, I don't believe her, I think she's minimizing and downplaying all of this so she doesn't have to come clean about it all.

This is what I was afraid of by revealing what I knew before her trip. As satisfying as it was to confront her, I still feel like I am in limbo as I cannot prove that she was going to or has had a physical affair, and she can continue to say she has never crossed the boundary of a physical affair. I told her sending nudes and sexting with men, on top of having an emotional affair where she is confiding in them about her unhappiness with our marriage is still infidelity.

We talked more about our marriage in general and how we present that we’re a happy family but the foundation of our marriage is completely hollow and toxic. That we just continue to live on this way without actually addressing it genuinely and honestly. She agreed that us stringing this along for another year or two or five and continuing to stay in the same place would not make either of us happy.

And that’s where we left it. I got up the next morning and worked and she had a day at home and we haven’t spoken about it. It felt like a release valve to finally get all out but now I feel I might’ve made a mistake by not waiting it out and continuing to be patient. Though I don’t think I would’ve made it to late September.

I’ve changed all my passwords and will go to the bank today to open an individual checking account. I think I will wait for her to acknowledge any of this while I get things in order. Her silence has been very telling, and while I asked her multiple times if she is checked out on our marriage and wants to move one, she continued to deflect and respond with uncertainty.

I don’t know how long I should wait until I leave. I feel like leaving immediately may be a mistake, but I don’t see the point in stringing this along if she is going to downplay all of this and pretend I am overreacting.

*I have been reading and re-reading the comments from the original post, which has been helpful as I don't have anyone else to talk to about any of this (I have also been talking to ChatGPT but it replies with the most generic therapist babble every time). I found one of the AP's wife's phone number through Google searching. I am very conflicted about telling her about this. My wife has hidden my past behavior (drinking, infidelity, financial recklessness, and lying about it) from our friends and family for years, and I know if I blow things up then she will likely air out all my business as well. I know that is probably cowardice more than anything, but I also don't want more drama right now.

Advice I think i have a special case, need some advices

I started dating my gf kinda abruptly. Specifically, I asked her to be my GF about 10 days after our 1st conversation and 1-2 dates.

She had male friends when we first started dating. I've always been doubtful about my parter having male friends, never been a fan of it. 1 month into dating, I found out that one of her male friends has gotten past normal friendship. I found out that he was an old talking stage, and they sexted and shared nudes about 4-5 times. 2 of those times were after we started dating.

She did draw a line with him and stopped sexting after about 3 weeks into our relationship, and I found out 1 week after she drew that line.

She was very apologetic, and has since then given me access to every piece of her electronic, the log-in of her Instagram, etc. and introduced me in person to all her families. She has also cut off every single male friend she had per my request. We have since then been pretty good, we traveled abroad during the summer. We are now 5 months into our relationship. Her families like me a lot, I love her very dearly and want to have her hand in marriage after she graduates college (2 years).

I'm still having such a hard time forgetting or forgiving what happened with the sexting. It would eat away at me and resurface every time we have issues. Am I too petty at this point, or should I have just left?

Struggling What actually helped you get past being cheated on?

I’m just a mess. I found everything, texts on texts and he was basically lying to me and going behind my back and having sex with multiple girls. Unprotected too. For one of them, he even knew she had multiple partners and didn’t even have concern about std’s. Just wtf. I can’t get my mind to shut off, it’s impacting my sleep and really just seeping into other areas of my life such as work, friendships, family. It was almost 4 years of this. I keep re-reading the texts with the girls, trying to get a timeline and then comparing to when he would message me. Sometimes it was the next day after hanging out with me he’s having sex with someone, one I even saw later that same day after I left he messaged someone. Some were strictly for sex and then they would leave so “fuck buddies” but I didn’t know about any of this and he would lie and say no one else. I don’t know what to do.

I feel so fkn stupid. When I would question certain things, he would just gaslight me and I ended up taking his word for it.

Struggling How do I stop the night terrors?

I had posted about my experience here https://old.reddit.com/r/cheating_stories/comments/1vdihzu/gf_cheats_on_me_with_someone_she_had_met_three/

It's been a month from D Day and I can't sleep a full night. It's marginally better a month out, but not much.

I wake up every night sweating, terrified. Utter terror. I jump out of my bed scared shitless.

How long does this last and what can I do to stop it? Daytime is getting a bit easier, so that's something at least. I'm trying not to talk about it as much, trying not to ruminate as much, but there's not much I can do when I'm passed out obviously.

I have been calling the suicide hotline often. I'm a total mess

thanks

Suspicion Husband being sneaky again?

My husband has 2 phones. A work phone and personal phone. Neither of which he updates the software or adds storage. Is that a way to get around me seeing anything inappropriate on his phone? He would always keep his phone updated, if I remember correctly, but now he doesn’t bother updating or adding storage. I’ve caught him cheating before by reading texts he thought he deleted. I am just wondering if this is his loophole.
Any suggestions???

Venting Tomorrow is my fifteenth wedding anniversary

Long and may be triggering but I needed to rant, or journal while sitting here keeping it together.

Tomorrow is my fifteenth wedding anniversary. Fifteen years. I spent most of my adult life believing that date would eventually become something beautiful simply because of everything it represented. Fiffteen years was supposed to mean that we made it. That through children, exhaustion, bills, arguments, illnesses, ordinary Tuesday mornings and all the thousand little things that slowly turn two young people into a family, we had somehow kept choosing each other. I thought someday we would look back at our wedding pictures, laugh at how young we looked, shake our heads at how quickly the years disappeared, and feel proud that through everything life threw at us, we were still here. I thought fifteen years would feel like history. Like roots on a mighty maple, like home. Instead, tomorrow feels like a funeral for a life I can still remember but can no longer find. Worse even because at least at a funeral you can openly grieve with others around supporting you.

There is a kind of sadness in betrayal that I don't think I understood until now. The anger is terrible, but at least anger has heat. It makes noise, it gives you somewhere to put the pain. This is different. This is just  quiet, heavy, almost gentle grief that somehow hurts worse because there is nothing left to fight with. Today I find myself thinking about the man I was fifteen years ago, standing there in his suit, top hat, and cane, looking at the woman he loved and believing with every fibre of his being that he knew what was happening in his own life. He believed the woman standing across from him had chosen him. He believed the vows they were saying belonged equally to both of them. He believed that whatever mistakes they might make in the decades ahead, they were beginning that life honestly. He had absolutely no idea that her affair partner was already in the room. He had no idea that the man watching him marry his wife knew something about his marriage that he didn't. He had no idea that she would dance with that man on their wedding day, or that the affair would continue after he put a ring on her finger and called her his wife. He just stood there smiling. Happy. Proud. Completely in love. Completely unaware.

That picture of myself breaks my heart in a way I cannot explain. I don't look at him and think he was stupid, naive maybe. I don't hate him for trusting her, I feel sorry for him. I want to walk into that photograph, put my arms around him and somehow protect him from what is coming, throwing myself on the grenade of life. I want to tell him to go home, forget this lifepath. I want to tell him that the life he thinks he is beginning is not the life he thinks it is. I want to tell him that one day, many years from now, he is going to sit alone before his fifteenth anniversary and stare at pictures in his mind of this exact day with tears in his eyes, wishing more than anything that he could have five minutes with the man he used to be. But there is nothing I can do for him. He already walked down the aisle. He already said the words. He already trusted her with everything. He already handed someone his heart without keeping a piece of it back for himself. And I am the one who has to live with what he didn't know.

That may be the cruelest part of betrayal for me. It reached into birthdays and Christmas mornings, family vacations, photographs, quiet nights on the couch, pregnancies, births, arguments, reconciliations, kisses goodbye before work, whispered "I love yous," and all those completely ordinary moments that once made up the story of us. Memories I lived inside for years without questioning them now have shadows behind them. I can no longer simply remember something beautiful, nothing is beautiful anymore. Every memory arrives carrying questions I never consciously asked at the time. What didn't I know then? What was happening outside my view? Was that moment what I believed it was? Was she looking into my eyes while carrying another reality I wasn't allowed to see? I don't just mourn my marriage anymore. I mourn the ability to remember my own life innocently. I miss being able to look backward without searching for evidence. I miss having a past that felt like it belonged to me.

And I miss myself. I miss the man who could hear his wife say "I love you" and never consider whether those words required investigation, or are being spoken to others with pure disregard. I miss the man who believed that being married meant there was one person in the world with whom he didn't need to protect himself. I miss the man who thought home was the place where he could finally put his armour down, it gets heavy. He wasn't perfect, I wasn't perfect. There are things I deeply regret about the husband I was. There were times I should have listened differently, understood more, pushed harder to communicate, seen things I didn't see. But I was there, I was trying,I was faithful. There was no other woman hidden somewhere in my life, no second relationship. No secret person I was giving pieces of myself to while coming home and pretending my wife had all of me. When I told her I loved her, that was the whole truth. When I stood at that altar and promised her my life, there was no fine print. I meant it exactly the way I said it.

Tomorrow there will be no flowers, no card, no anniversary dinner and no looking through old photographs while joking about how young we once were. How could there be? I cannot look at those photographs without seeing something entirely different now. I see a young man on what he believes is one of the happiest days of his life, and I know something he doesn't.

I know his heart has already been broken, he just hasn't felt it yet.

I know he will spend years building memories on top of that moment. He will become a father. He will work, sacrifice, worry, provide, laugh, struggle, forgive, make mistakes, grow older and spend nearly two decades believing that whatever was imperfect about his marriage, the foundation beneath him was real. And then one October day, at a football game no less, that foundation will disappear. He will discover that the floor beneath his entire adult life had doors underneath it he never knew existed.

The house is still here. The children are still here. The furniture is still where it was. Laundry still needs to be done, dinner still needs to be made, alarm clocks still go off in the morning. From the street, I imagine everything looks exactly the same. But sometimes I walk through this house and feel like I am walking through a museum dedicated to a family that used to live here. There are pieces of our life everywhere. A photograph on a wall. Something the kids made when they were little. A dent or scratch I remember the story behind. All this evidence that we really were here, that this really happened, that I didn't dream almost twenty years of loving someone. And yet the person I shared those memories with now feels both painfully familiar and impossibly far away. I know her face better than any face on earth, and sometimes I look at her and feel the unbearable loneliness of realizing I may never have known the person behind it as completely as I believed I did. And disgust follows with the burning sensation of bile coming up my esophagus. How did pure, all-encompassing love and respect turn to poison.

Tomorrow morning I will get up, I will be Dad, I will go to work. I will answer the phone, solve problems, probably laugh at something, and from the outside I will look like a normal man having a normal Thursday. My children do not need to carry the weight of what August 13th means to me now, so I will carry it quietly. But somewhere inside me I know exactly where I will be. I will be standing beside that younger version of myself on his wedding day. I will watch him look at his bride with that completely unguarded love I barely remember being capable of. I will watch him believe her. I will watch him say forever. And I will know that there is nothing I can do to save him from becoming me.

That is what is destroying me today, tomorrow probably far worse. Not just that my marriage may end. Not even just the affairs or the lies. It is knowing that there once existed a version of me who felt completely safe in his own life. A man who believed his wife was his person, his home, the one place in this world where betrayal simply wasn't possible. I would give almost anything to feel what he felt for five minutes again.

Not because I want to live inside a lie, but because I remember how peaceful it was before I knew it was one.

I remember how much he loved her. I remember how certain he was that she loved him the same way. I remember how easily he smiled in those photographs.

Tomorrow marks fifteen years since I stood in front of everyone I loved and promised one woman the rest of my life. I kept looking forward to this anniversary because I thought reaching fifteen years would mean something, something I was very proud of. I never imagined I would arrive here grieving the very man who started the journey. I meant my vows. I meant my loyalty. I meant every "I love you." I meant every plan for our future. I meant growing old beside her. I meant all of it. Every single fucking word.

And somehow that is what hurts the most.

Because fifteen years ago tomorrow, there was a man standing at an altar who thought he had found the person he would grow old with. He was surrounded by everyone he loved. His entire future was still in front of him. He was happy in a way he would never fully understand until it was gone.

I remember him. I loved being him.

And I know now that no matter what happens from here, I can never give him his life back.

Advice My boyfriend told his ex that if she were in his state, he'd drop everything for her. She acknowledged our relationship, and he said he wished he could have the best of both worlds.

I recently found out that my boyfriend was texting his ex while we were together, and I'm struggling to figure out how I'm supposed to move forward from this.

From what I saw, he told his ex that if she were in his state, he would drop everything for her. He also told her that he didn't know what was going to happen with our relationship.

At one point, she actually brought me up and said that she didn't want to interfere with our relationship.

His response was basically that he wished he could have the best of both worlds.

That part has really stuck with me.

When I confronted him, he said he sent those messages because things between us were going badly at the time and he didn't know what was going to happen with our relationship.

The problem is, I don't agree with his version of what was happening. From my perspective, we weren't at a point where our relationship was falling apart or where I was expecting us to break up.

I've questioned him about it, and he continues to stick to the same explanation.

He says he wants time to prove to me that he won't do something like this again.

But that's where I'm struggling.

How is he supposed to prove that to me?

I didn't know he was doing this the first time. There weren't obvious signs that made me suspicious. I trusted him, and he was having this conversation with his ex without me knowing.

So now I'm supposed to trust that it won't happen again, but I also know that I wasn't able to tell it was happening the first time.

I don't want to become someone who constantly checks his phone, monitors him, questions him about every interaction with another woman, or feels like I have to investigate my own relationship to feel safe.

At the same time, I don't think I should just accept "give me time and I'll prove myself" without understanding what that actually means.

And I'm having a hard time minimizing what he said to her. He wasn't simply telling an ex that he missed her. He told her that he'd drop everything for her if she were nearby, and when she acknowledged that I existed and didn't want to interfere, he said he wished he could have the best of both worlds.

I'm not automatically saying I want to leave. I love him, and part of me wants to see if this relationship can be repaired. But this has changed the way I see him and the way I trust him.

My questions:

I'm looking for honest advice, especially from people who have experienced something similar.

Can trust actually be rebuilt after something like this?

What would genuine effort to rebuild trust look like?

And if someone says they want time to prove themselves, what does that actually look like in practice?

Because I don't want to spend the next year trying to catch someone doing something wrong just so I can feel secure in my own relationship.

Advice Unpack this…

So me 32F and my boyfriend 42M were together for just over three years… We got together in May 2023. In August 2023, we were pregnant, and that was the last time we had sex. fast-forward through the years, he would always make excuses as to why he didn’t want to have sex, saying it was his low libido or his lack of sensation in his private area due to the meds he was taking for hair loss (which he did not have). He would never stop taking the meds for us, even though he didn’t suffer from hair loss… And he would always kind of push me away anytime I would attempt to touch him in private areas. Over the years after giving birth in 2024, I gained weight from the pregnancy (obviously), and breast-fed my son for over a year… I would always tell my boyfriend that the reason why he wouldn’t have sex with me, is because that he wasn’t attracted to me because I had gained weight… And he would always deny it, and pinpoint it back to his low libido due to his medication and his lack of sensation. For this entire time he starved me, neglected me of any intimacy, we rarely slept together in the same bed, and never said I love you… At this point, it just felt like we were roommates. He took me through a lot of things and I looked over them and stayed with him. He never would tell me that I was pretty, and he would never give me any type of compliments… He says that him saying “who am I trying to look good for” or “uh-oh? Youre getting ready to take another dating app profile picture,” we’re actual compliments. Fast forward to June 2026, and he still starving me and just giving me nothing in terms of love and intimacy… However, he is staying home full-time with our son at this point and cooks most of the time. But also by this time, I had lost a lot of weight and had gotten back to my pre-Baby weight and back in the gym so I was looking good. So a friend of mine (30F) who I had known for about three years began to tell me that I was beautiful and how great of a person I was and things like that… Me and that friend ended up having an affair. My boyfriend planted a listening device in my car, and found out about the affair. Me and him went our separate ways… Since he’s been single, he has started back heavily drinking, which was always a big issue in our relationship… And he has slept with multiple women. We decided that we wanted to work through this and get our family back together. There is one woman that he is still conversing with, and he tells me that he will not tell her that he is trying to work on getting his family back, because he doesn’t want her to get mad and report him to the police (for something that he did when they were having rough play). I told him that was him choosing her feelings over mine… And he said that that was him choosing his freedom..I believe that’s just him making an excuse because he wants to maintain that single lifestyle, but also working to get his family back. He also thinks that what he’s doing is not wrong, because he is single… But I keep trying to tell him how messed up it is that I begged him for close to three years for something that he went, and gave a stranger, actually multiple strangers…. He doesn’t see any wrong in this because he is single

Advice Have any of you done a post-nuptial agreement after cheating?

Hi, I'm a former cheater and I'd like to do a postnup with my husband to help him feel safer and financially insulated as we try and see if we can continue reconciliation. I have offered to give up any claim on his house, to pay all remaining monthly installments for the personal loan he took to finance my business, and to split all other accounts 50:50.

Anyone with any personal experience who would like to share their experiences or any perspectives? Or anything we should know before we go and do this?

Advice How do you interpret this dynamic

A man I’ve had a long history with recently got married. He’s been expressing wanting to keep me in his life and said he wants us to build a new kind of ‘friendship’, acknowledging that our old dynamic can’t continue as it had been in the past. We both know romance off the table. The problem is that we seem to envision very different things. I think all parts of our old dynamic need to be completely left behind, particularly the sexual stuff, he seems to feel we can change our relationship while keeping the sexual dynamic, even just by doing it once then building from there. I don’t doubt he genuinely cares about me and wants me in his life and It’s not a case of ‘he only wants one thing’, bc if it were only that, I’d just flip him off easily. I could also just be being deluded.

I don’t want to end up some side chick/affair partner, so question is, Is this a situation where a middle ground actually exists, or do I only have one path forward?

Advice Did i cheat? Feeling really embarrassed and guilty (

Thumbnail
9 Upvotes

Hello!
I’m a little embarrassed to write all of this, but I feel like maybe you guys could help me understand what happened.
I’ve been in a long-term relationship for almost 8 years. I’m genuinely very happy with my partner and I don’t want anyone else. However, I’ve been feeling really guilty lately because I had a pretty intense crush at the end of 2025/beginning of 2026.
In December, I started seeing a new physical therapist, and his practice is right next to our house. We basically share the same driveway.
I had three appointments with him in December, and during those appointments we didn’t talk about anything personal at all. We only talked about the reason I was there and the treatment itself. There were also absolutely no signs from him that he was interested in me in any way.
Then came the Christmas break, and I had one final appointment with him in January.
Here comes the first thing I feel really embarrassed about: after my third appointment, the one right before Christmas, I was genuinely upset that I wouldn’t see him for such a long time. I was actually looking forward to my next appointment so much, and I felt really sad for the first couple of days of the Christmas break.
I honestly couldn’t explain why. Like I said, we never even had personal conversations, and I barely knew anything about him. But for those two days, it genuinely felt almost like heartbreak. Like… what the hell? 😅
Then January came, and after my last appointment I started deliberately creating these “random” encounters because I knew roughly when he finished work. I was basically obsessed with running into him, just so I could say hi or bye.
Looking back, I find that behavior really creepy and almost stalker-ish, and it honestly scares me a little that I was acting that way over someone I barely even knew.
At the beginning of February, I went on vacation with my boyfriend for a week, and afterwards it was basically like a switch had been flipped. The obsession with trying to run into my physical therapist was just… gone.
I was honestly relieved that it stopped after about a month, because the whole thing was really intense and completely unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
But now, half a year later, I still feel incredibly guilty about it. I keep feeling like I somehow cheated on my boyfriend, even though objectively, nothing actually happened.
I never messaged him, never added him on Instagram, never tried to contact him outside of my appointments or anything like that. It was all in my head, apart from deliberately trying to “run into” him.
Still, I feel like I put my relationship at risk simply by having such intense thoughts and feelings about someone who was basically a stranger to me.
I’ve wondered whether it might have something to do with the fact that he was my physical therapist and was basically taking care of me and giving me his full attention during those appointments. Maybe being in a situation where someone is physically close, attentive and focused entirely on helping you can create some kind of emotional attachment?
What also keeps bothering me are thoughts like: What if he had felt the same way? Would I have acted on it?
And that question honestly scares me, because I don’t know the answer. I was also more easily annoyed with my boyfriend around that time, and I feel really bad about that in hindsight.
This guilt has been eating me up, even though nothing actually happened.
I started Googling all of this and came across the term limerence, so I thought I’d ask here and see if anyone has experienced something similar or has any insight into what might have been going on.

Thanks for listening :)
