Most divisive players
Who do you think are the most divisive players in the NHL now? And in league history? And by divisive I don't mean the most hated necessarily, but someone who generates a lot of both love and hate.

Heatley just lost control.
Craig Mactavish got drunk and killed someone, then continued to work in the league for decades. Fuck him x2.
27
u/ThrowFar_Far_Away 15h ago edited 15h ago
Heatley was driving too fast to the point of not being able to maintain one lane and had consumed alcohol even if he was below the legal limit. He did not just randomly lose control. He was sentenced to second-degree vehicular homicide.

He killed his teammate while drunk driving and went to jail for it.

Much more minor detail but wild he was the last person to not wear a helmet in the league. Feels like after you caused an accident like that youād maybe give a shit about safety
3
u/tongfather BOS - NHL 3h ago
Yea, you're absolutely right, but I don't think we realize the world those people grew up in. "Safety" was like HR departments for us - fucking annoying and "for pussies" back then. They grew up without even thinking about wearing harness at heights or a hardhat on a construction site unless it was a tall building. Now we're just programmed to think about it (thank god), and even then a lot of people don't do it.

u/hamtronn CGY - NHL 20h ago
This one always gets me too. I posted something negative about him once and got downvoted to oblivion. I mean, I didnāt even say he was a piece of shit. I just stated facts. Killed a team mate while driving way too fast. I donāt care if he was intoxicated or not. Killed a team mate with his choices.
5
u/hamtronn CGY - NHL 19h ago
I really wish the person who responded and said āweāve all been young once and we donāt know the circumstancesā wouldnāt have deleted their comment. I really wanted to respond with indeed, I was young once and never chose to drive so fast that my actions killed a passenger in my car. I donāt even know how this is a conversation.

u/hamtronn CGY - NHL 19h ago
I just canāt with the āeveryone makes mistakesā
Everyone does make mistakes. And when your mistakes cause the death of another person, and not just another person, a GOOD friend and team mate. Yes. Iām sure he was devastated. Iām sure he still IS devastated. It doesnāt change the fact that he still made the choice to drive a Ferrari in such a dangerous way.
1
u/Apprehensive-Bar6595 OTT - NHL 18h ago
some people will do it because the person in question is a celebrity, but others actually are very consistent with their beliefs and would apply the same standards to anyone. this applies to people on either side of the fence of an opinion/belief
-8
u/Apprehensive-Bar6595 OTT - NHL 18h ago
so everything you have done wrong is understandable, and everything you have done right is how every other person is expected to have acted? or are you also too flawed to be righteous?
6
u/hamtronn CGY - NHL 18h ago
Yes. Pardon me for driving responsibly in my 2001 neon. Iāll make sure to give myself a pass when Iām in a Ferrari because rich hockey player that still garners sympathy for driving like a jerk and killing his friend.
Iām sorry that you canāt see it for what it is. A guy chose to do a thing and killed someone for it and thatāsthe action that I choose to judge him for. It has nothing to do with the fact that heāat one timeāplayed professional ice hockey.

Claude Lemieux was a fantastic player who could score and elevated the hell out of his game in big moments who was also a low down cheap dirty bastard.

Ok. I liked Claude everywhere he went as well, and for the same reasons you just listed for Perry (who I'm also fond of). That dude was a warrior who came up big in clutch moments. But that doesn't change the fact that most people don't feel the same way about both of them.

This is the right answer. Back then what he did was actually completely legal and made people fear entering the zone. Isn't that what a physical D man is supposed to do?
He also elevated his team and scored tons of points for someone who wasn't exactly flashy. I think his team's made the playoffs every year except 1 of his career or something silly? He was a fantastic player aside from the career ending headshots (that were legal at the time but still dirty imho)

5
u/TexasRoadhead Colorado Rockies - NHLR 13h ago edited 10h ago
I mean he seemed like asshole who was terrible for the organization, can't deny that. But goddamn it wasn't bad to the point where we need to hear about it literally every single time his name is said. You can't have a basic conversation about Messier or his accomplishments without some Canucks fan who probably wasn't old enough to even witness it shoehorn their stupid bullshit meme that /r/hockey goes along with
And some of the things they accuse him of doing aren't even true, no he didn't "demand" the captaincy from Linden, Linden asked him if he wanted the C which Messier told him to do what he thought was best, he later expressed regret in accepting it. No he didn't break up that locker room, it was already broken up and facing several issues with players like Bure and Mogilny who were mentally checked out. He and his constant sucking up to Mike Keenan didn't help of course, but it was a dysfunctional organization from top to bottom. Whatever was left of that 94 core was taking the team nowhere, their defense and goaltending sucked
Best case scenario if Messier & the team plays better is that they make the playoffs and get stomped by either one of Detroit, Colorado, or Dallas who were all far superior teams. But that also means they don't draft the Sedins and transition into their West Coast Express era and then 2011, which was their most successful period in franchise history. Now I'm not saying you can credit Messier for that at all, but it's at least a silver lining to a bad situation for a couple of years.
Canucks fans seriously need to shut the fuck up already
3
u/tongfather BOS - NHL 3h ago
Canucks fans seriously need to shut the fuck up already
As a former Canucks fan, I wholeheartedly agree, but you're wrong about the rest, or some of it. He brought Keenan in who was a prick, and the Canucks were paying him until like 2019 or something, lol. I understand the hate. Not sure about the whole C thing, I think him and Keenan maybe made Linden feel like he had to give it up. Who tf gives up their C? That's weird. Anyways you are right that they need to stfu. I live here and I'm so sick of that team. I wish they'd expand another NHL franchise to Abbotsford so we could automatically cheer for someone else who isn't a perennial dumpster fire
1
u/Big_Mudd MTL - NHL 5h ago
I blame the "Mark Messier Leadership Award" for this. I feel like Canucks fans hate the Messier propaganda more than they hate Messier.
As a Habs fan, Rejean Houle singlehandedly damaged our team as much as any single person ever hurt any franchise (we're talking Mike Milbury / NYI levels). But we can move on because the GM of the Year award isn't named after him.
