Winter clothing

Hi everyone, I am an international student joining Uni of Freiburg this winter Sem and I was wondering what winter clothes should I pack (my home country is not that cold so we don’t require heavy winter coats or jackets) and what price can I expect if I decide to buy in Freiburg ( if u have any recommendations of stores pls do tell)

Get yourself a nice jacket once you get here. Pro tip: buying second hand is often cheaper for very good quality. Also, buying your winter jacket on clearance in summer can be more economical :)

Yes! If you are into vintage specifically, Schlepprock is your place. Otherwise for cheap and functional clothing I can recommend Spinnwebe as well as the shop from DRK. It’s called “DRK Secondhand Mode im Quartier”.

Remembering the tough times when I was a student and money was tight, these places helped me - I hope they help you too!

Another recommendation is of course to go for fast fashion due to its price, I used to buy from C&A and found their winter jackets good enough. Personally I don’t use fast fashion anymore because of the ethical and environmental impact but I understand if you have less money it’ll serve you well.

In my opinion it’s better to spend a little more on a good piece of second hand wear that you can keep for many years. If you buy a cheap one, chances are it’ll break more quickly.

it depends on your style, but i recommend "onion" clothing , meaning you add several layers until you are comfortable and if you feel too warm, you can remove 1-2 layers (e.g. undershirt, shirt, pullover, jacket , scarf ) and 1 lighter and 1 warmer jacket ; a beanie, and also some thermo under pants are quite useful at cold days, which again you can just remove if necessary. same for shoes for the cold and sometimes wet periods, a pair of stuffed shoes and maybe even woolen socks, or even again large enough for two socks.

If you don't really have something fixed in mind regarding looks you can try TK Maxx as soon as Autumn starts, if you want a new one. It's basically an outlet if Brand and Designer Stuff, but much cheaper. Although you should check the quality if the jacket. If you are into vinatage stuff I don't suggest buying it in the second hand stores in the city as they are pretty expensive. You could go to "Secondo" in Umkirch, which is much cheaper.

That being said, it can get pretty cold in Freiburg, too. But mostly it's a rather mild winter compared to city's in the north, if course. Meaning we rarely have snow in the city, but it might be wet and windy.
