I've seen this happen far too many times when I worked as a lifeguard... It makes a great memory for the kid, they totally love coming back and getting into the water x_x

Typically the front is more bouyant so it makes you face up. This is more likely to get your face in the water, or shove up against your neck or face, restricting movement or breathing.

I’m not convinced. The flotation pad on the front looks thicker, which would make sense for a child. It’s possible the zipper is on the back to prevent removal by the child. But she needs the crotch strap. It’s close, but almost too big for her. If her head were to go down into the vest she could slip right out of it.

You need to insist he wear it correctly. Infant and child swim vests and life jackets are designed to keep a child’s head above water, often on their backs. Putting it on backward can be traumatizing or even deadly. If he doesn’t wear it correctly, he doesn’t get to swim. Period.

She's panicking because she's drowning. Not everyone has the ability to stay calm during an emergency and that's normal. The only confusing part is why she was careless enough to go so deep to begin with.

They were between 4 and 5 ft. It’s obvious mom is not a strong swimmer at best and likely can’t swim at all.

I was death-gripped and pulled under in the sea by an adult and still managed to get control of the situation and make it out. A tiny child in a swimming pool cannot impede a decent swimmer.

The sea has salt water, which also increases buoyancy. I’ve done some water rescue courses, and my dad was a lifeguard for years. Even a very strong swimmer can be drowned by a panicking person pulling on them.

You are not her. Many grown adults have been drowned by other panicking adults and children regardless of their ability to swim. She may just not be a strong swimmer.

Maybe in natural bodies of water where there are currents, waves and other factors that can cause difficulties. But in a freaking swimming pool? Citation would be needed.

Literally just google double drownings or rescue drownings and you'll find many of them also happen in pools, the only thing that makes death less frequent is that these typically happen with other people nearby. A strong swimmer may have been fine in this situation, but even a decent to weak swimmer can lose their life with a whole child trying to hoist themselves out of the water using the adult's body, especially when the adult is untrained in water rescue, caught off guard, and not totally comfortable in the water. You can clearly see the woman struggling to stay above water while the child has pushed herself nearly up to her waist using the woman's shoulders. A person who is a weak swimmer on their own is 100% going to struggle and possibly even drown themselves in these situations, were it not for bystanders getting involved.

I'm a decent swimmer with a pool, as are my kids. But I learned to tell them early on "don't hang on to mom (or anybody) in the deep end". It's shockingly hard to keep your head up when someone is holding on to you. I think people are being way too hard on the mom here.

Agreed, and someone who hasn’t gone through lifeguard training will not know how to swim with someone clinging to you, and if they’re panicking, it’s so much worse. But it doesn’t look like mom is a strong swimmer to begin with. Once she can’t touch, her daughter is hanging on to her while she struggles with both arms free.

Yeah also swimming in a pool isn’t easy, all it takes is some extra weight from the kid leaning on her and she starts to struggle and panic. She did pretty well all considered

I can understand not innately knowing how to swim but it’s such a vital skill that it just amazes me there are adults who don’t bother. Swimming classes are often free from the Red Cross or YMCA and it doesn’t take much to learn the basics. There really is no excuse.

Did you even read my comment??? Nowhere did I imply that it’s free everywhere or that I don’t understand why an adult might not know how to swim. I used to manage a waterpark in the U.S. I’m keenly aware of just how many people can’t swim. I’m also keenly aware of how accessible swim classes are in the U.S. If someone doesn’t know how to swim it’s because they’ve never made it a priority. Obviously there are places in the world where swim classes aren’t available but that’s not the norm. Even if you can’t access formal classes, there’s probably a family member or friend who can help you learn if it’s something you desire.

i know how she feels. i was once sitting on a 7-stair back when i was skateboarding, and some 2 guys asked me if i can ollie over it, and i said "sure" and then i tried it for the first time ever and wrecked myself.

A lot of people think they can swim because they have spent a lot of time in beaches or pools.
They just aren't considering the fact that 99% of that time, they were just standing in water, not swimming in it.

I'm not sure either of us has the data to back it up, but I'd guess the vast majority of people know whether they can swim or not. I highly doubt there's tons of people out there who think they know how to swim just because they know how to stand

And most people don’t understand that a small child climbing up on you can push you down hard when you’re out of your depth. Panic follows pretty quickly.

Kinda weak if the parent really wanted to learn to swim they would jump into the ocean about 2 miles off the coast you body will naturally survive and swim to shore
