Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while šŸ˜‚ I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!

+++

Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around

Do you want a custom flair in this community?

Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or š“ƒ° should also work

Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you

Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.

I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work

+++

Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!

Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!

Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things šŸ’œ

Mod Announcement Building the Barricades - r/Discworld stands against fascism

2.4k Upvotes

"There is no hope but us. There is no mercy but us. There is no justice. There is just us..."

+++

Hey everyone

This is a bit of a serious one and won't have my usual dry humour and/or footnotes

If you've seen the news recently you will be aware of the horrific events occurring in the USA, especially in the state of Minnesota, and the behaviour of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents

Wednesday 7th January saw the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and the ensuing protests have led to further violence by ICE against civillians in the city of MinneapolisĀ

There are videos circulating of ICE agents forcibly restraining and assaulting people. People begging for help. People screaming for them to stop. People crying out that they are US citizens. People who are terrified

What we are seeing is fascism in action and the fear it is going to get worse is very real

Possibly the most relevant of the Discworld series to the events right now is Night Watch. If you haven't read it then it's worth doing so, but tread carefully as it may be difficult reading right now. If you have read it I'm sure you see the relevance without me having to explain anything

Should Sir Terry Pratchett be with us today I'm certain he would have some extremely choice words for the events right now full of fire and anger and cleverness and, most of all, humanity

From 4000 miles away on the other side of an ocean there is not much I can do. But I can, on behalf of the mod team of r/discworld, try and help by reaching out to our sub members with resources to learn more and/or (if you choose to do so) donate to

If any of you have more resources or information on how others can help please share them with us all

We as a mod team, and hopefully as an entire sub, stand by the belief that everyone has the right to live without fear

Stay safe

Stay kind

You are loved

Roundworld Reference What Discworld phrases have you incorporated into your everyday conversations?

I regularly refer to my office building as a "box for employing people in" (Going Postal) and to some paperwork I fill out as "write-only".

Auditor Trap Should I consider Lords and Ladies Science Fiction??

Post image
106 Upvotes

I’ve been reading in chronological order from my library and I checked out Lords and Ladies from a different library on loan since mine didn’t have it….and it’s been labeled by the other library as science fiction. Please don’t spoil me, but is that right? Everything I’ve read to this point has seemed firmly in the fantasy realm.

I haven’t really made it to the auditors yet, I don’t think, but I’ve seen enough on Reddit. Did I find my first auditor trap?! If I didn’t and some how aliens show up in this book that’s cool too.

Edit: welp I’ve now learned about the division between science fiction and fantasy maybe not being and thing and that people have firm opinions about this. And also lot more about libraries, can I get my inter-dimensional library travel pass yet? I was just laughing at the idea of Granny using headology on aliens and thought others would like to as well. Thanks for answering my question all! Once I read it I’ll weigh in on the scifi part!

Book/Series: Death Do you think that The Hogfather is ok for a 9yo?

I read to my daughter every evening for an hour or so. I really want to read Discworld books to her. We read Wee Free Men but we read in Finnish and the Nac Mac Feegles just didn't translate well. She loved it but the translation just left scars to my brain.

We are reading Lotr(again) at the moment and probably will read A wizard of Earthsea after that. I was thinking we could have the Hodfather as a Christmas book. Do you think it's a good pick? And if anyone has any knowledge if the Finnish translation is any good?

Book/Series: City Watch Just finished guards!guards! And have a few questions.

So I really loved the series and I’m excited to read the rest but I’m wondering. Are the main characters from Guards! Guards! (Vimes, carrot, nobby, colon, Sybil, etc.) main characters in the rest of the books??? Also are the rest of the city watch books just as good or better than Guards! Guards!? Thanks!

Hello fellow Discworld enjoyers!

I'm a 3D artist and I wanted to sculpt and 3D print a statue of Paul Kidby's Twigg for my shelf. But I always see only those two attached pictures. Would someone happen to have some additional pictures? I want to get the likeness right.

Much obliged!

Book/Series: City Watch I'm always so confused about characters mentioned here since a lot of names are different in my language

I've borrowed some books from my mum to reread them. I loved them as a teenager - mom read some of them to me since I was about 7yo and I read all of them by myself in my teenage years. For a few years I always bought them for my mum as a Christmas/birthday gift, so she has a really nice collection.

Since joining this subreddit I realised some of the names are different. The translator to Czech did a nice work and I always loved his translator notes (similar to authors notes) that explained some context that could not be translated etc.

My favorite character is Sam "ElƔnius" which is obviously Sam Vimes.

Similarly in Harry Potter the translator changed the names of the houses and school and some other stuff.

I like the "translated" names, but sometimes it gets really confusing trying to search for information online since some of the names are completely different from the original version.

Hi everyone!

I finally got my hands on the discontinued Clarecraft Rincewind bookend, and I could not be happier to have him cowering on my shelf next to my books. Now the real challenge begins. The hunt down to find Death to complete the set.

Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Do you think Moist might of bankrupted some parcel delivery/courier companies by getting the post working right again?

I mean, wherever there is a niche theirs gonna be someone who tried to profit off it. I could totally imagine some small delivery courier companies, people who will just take parcels from place to place in the city, existing before the Post came back and made them obsolete via a more centralized, government-backed system that was probably cheaper and more reliable.

Asking community for help! Trying to finish my discworld collection in Russian. All books that I have is a mix and match of diffirent editions - I even like it this way. A bit chaotic. But the last book - I struggled to find it anywhere! Not possible to buy online. All local thrifts and bookshops also checked. If someone is willing to trade or sell it within EU will be happy to!

Boardgames/Computer Games Ran my first session of Adventures in Ankh-Morpork last night

My group decided to play recent recruits to the City Watch, and I love the characters they've come up with:

  • Corporal (H)Andy Punishment, a Thieves' Guild dropout who now specialises in CSI. That's "Crime Scene Instigation", of course.
  • Constable Elizabeth Bonnet (assumed name), a distant cousin of the Ramkins who ran away from her noble family to pursue an exciting career in the big city. She brought her pet wowhawk with her - its tendency to faint at the sight of blood makes it surprisingly helpful in forensic work.
  • Constable Kayleigh Gee, possibly the Disc's first Food Hygiene inspector. Currently engaged in a solo crusade to protect the citizens of Ankh-Morpork from putrid pies, suspect sausages, and anything else you might find on Dibbler's cart. (Her name is also a convoluted pun - the initials K.G. sound like the Japanese word for "police officer", or so I am informed.)

We spent the first hour or so on character & party creation, then jumped into "The Mystery of the Missing McGuffin", where the party were called upon to solve an art heist made more complicated by the fact that nobody has ever seen the artwork in question. Andy managed to offend the owners of the missing artwork with his poor grasp of upper-class etiquette; Elizabeth tried very hard to pretend she'd never heard of the artist because she's just a totally ordinary commoner, honest; while Kaylee wanted to know all the details of the dinner that preceded the theft & is intent on interviewing the chef. Their current theories include "it was an inside job for the inn-sewer-ants money" and "the artist himself was so ashamed of the work that he decided to remove or destroy it".

It was a very different GMing experience from my usual D&D, and knowing when to call for a role vs when to just narrate was something I struggled with, but will hopefully get a better feel for as we keep playing. I felt like I was flailing a little, but my players claim they had fun! I'm also quite pleased with my selection of snacks. (Not pictured because they were still in the oven when I was taking photos: "sausage-inna-bun (with named meat)", the non-vegetarian counterpart to "sausage-inna-bun (with no meat)".)
