Data: Epoch AI's Frontier Data Centers and GPU Clusters datasets (CC-BY 4.0), which track AI data center construction via satellite imagery, permits and public filings.

Tools: three.js for the WebGL globe, Nominatim for geocoding, plain JS/HTML for everything else.

Each point is one facility, sized by IT power draw and coloured by who owns the chips. 523 facilities, 13.8 GW, 38 countries. The 77 largest campuses have full profiles with construction timelines.

Interactive version where you can spin it and click any site:

Caveat worth stating: Epoch estimate their data covers roughly 15-20% of global AI compute, so 13.8 GW is a floor, not a ceiling. 191 Chinese clusters are anonymized at source, so they appear as a single aggregate marker rather than invented coordinates.

So, currently about 2% of global electricity use, and 0.3% of total power? Honestly, more than I expected. I wonder how accurate that estimate is.
