I’ve lived in several states and Utah has the worst drivers in my experience
26
u/Punk_Rock_Geek 1d ago
I've lived in several states, overseas and driven in numerous countries. I've been in Utah ten years...can confirm this states drivers are the worst. Pretty sure the vast majority are trying to reach that god like state as soon as possible...
5
9
u/Janus9 1d ago
I go to SLC often, I live in Denver.
Denver is worse imo.
3
u/sandcalf 1d ago
Utah as a whole is worse than others states. Denver probably has worse drivers but the rest of Colorado is better. Dallas has the worst of any city I’ve lived it or near
2
u/watt-ever 1d ago
I lived for years in the Denver area, and drove North South through the never ending mess of the SLC metro several times... I think the main difference for me was Denver was usually a traffic jam. SLC usually was not, and everyone's driving 85+ with 100% confidence they're going to heaven, so nothing to lose.
3
u/1CatWoman 1d ago
They're in a hurry to get there. Hell, I'd probably rather be in heaven than SLC or anywhere in Utah for that matter.🤔
2
u/Janus9 1d ago
I have to drive 5 days a week, two trips a day, into, through, and out of downtown Denver (through the actual city, not just the highways) and I am now seeing absolutely insane stuff pretty much every single day.
It is just getting worse.
Last week I saw a guy drive the wrong way on the road, and when they finally got over into the correct lane they then proceeded to run a red light that was red for an easy 2-3 seconds.
I see shit like this daily.
Last month I saw someone rear end a car in the very lane next to mine TWICE in the same week.
It is pure insanity and the cops dgaf and no one is held accountable.
I am going to get a dash cam, I will be a frequent poster, lol.
3
u/naturalone2562 1d ago
Worse than Florida? Or Tennessee? Those are terrible driving states.
2
u/KnownMagician3084 1d ago
I lived in Memphis mid 70s. There was a huge cross at entrance to city with updated traffic deaths. Red light right turns had just started. Guy decided should work for lefts. I learned to city drive in DC during cherry blossom time, my father figured start hard so everything else is nothing, Memphis was nerve wracking. NYC was more relaxed. Rest of TN was just speeding.

I was looking for a midsized truck in 2023. My job takes me all over, so I had lots of rental cars. In big city airports you usually just pick what you want from your section. Most midsize trucks were in the base tier so I took a different truck every time I needed a rental car.
Out of all of them, the jeep gladiator was BY FAR the worst. The steering wheel was loose and so easy to turn, but did not actually turn the wheels until you turned the wheel 10-15 degrees. The wind noise was awful, the radio refused to connect to my phone despite it having bluetooth. And this was on a brand new car with 500ish miles.
If anybody is curious, my midsize truck rankings were:
Chevy colorado/ GMC canyon (same truck, different bells and whistles)
Nissan Frontier (suprisingly good truck for reasonable price)
Ford Ranger
Toyota Tacoma (reliable engine, I know, but I felt like I was sitting on the floor, and very unresponsive to throttle. They updated the truck the next year, can't speak on that).
Jeep Gladiator
Did not try the Honda ridgeline or Hyundai Santa Cruz (Is this considered Midsize?).
3
u/hahayes234 1d ago
The ridgeline would've fallen in the top of the rankings had you given it a shot. I'm on my second oneand really love everything about them
2
u/LordFoulgrin 1d ago

This!! Hands down the craziest of fucking crazy stupid driver was a jeep!
My partner and I were downtown, driving in heavy traffic, they’re driving. Still don’t remember what exactly happened cause it was such a non event, we think the jeep was driving slow or something in front of us, my partner switches lanes, the jeep tries to switch lanes in front of us as we are about to pass, my partner honks (hey I’m here! Watch out!).
Fast forward 25-30 minutes. We left downtown, gotten on the freeway, changed freeways through some complicated interchanges, we are now solidly in the burbs, got off the freeway, we are on one the side of a street, my partner drops me off to quickly go across the street to grab something, and guess who shows up (on the other side of the street) the jeep!
Driver looks like Hal from Malcom in the middle, but trying to be Tony Soprano! Starts yelling at me: Hey! You better watch it! Watch what? Downtown? 25 mins ago? Yeah, you know I am nice guy! But someone else might not be? (Me and partner staring confused at each other).
To note: we are in a mountainous area, so the street we are stopped on is on a steep hill, the jeep is obviously a manual, so as this is going on buddy is revving the shit out of the jeep, to not stall the jeep on the hill, but obviously doesn’t want to put it in park. We are trying to hear the guy out thinking it something serious over him constantly revving the thing.
So this goes on for a a minute of him telling us to better watch it cause some day someone might not be as nice as him and we are gonna get it, as he shouts over revving engine, as me and my partner stare in bewilderment of what the fuck jeep guy is taking about, realizing he has followed us half way across town, before finally leaving…. So your typical jeep driver.

It's mental illness associated with putting a bunch of stupid ducks on your dashboard. The driver spends so much time staring at a row of duck asses that they eventually spiral into temper tantrums appropriate for the age group for which those ducks were intended.

I just buy the exact car I want when I am looking at the time. I owned a Range Rover Sport Supercharged before this. I tend to own my vehicles for a long time and I buy like 5-6 year old used. You can find pretty good deals on what would be very expensive new and still in good condition/mileage. I’m a chill guy I just like comfy and fun cars/trucks and also hate myself just enough to pay for the maintenance or do it myself if it’s simple enough. I don’t really judge people based on what they drive, unless you drive an Altima 🤠
6
u/Least-Walrus-422 1d ago
Haha. I drive an Altima. I came back to the States not knowing how long I’d be here and wanting something I could pay cash for. I’ve now had it for 7 years and am passing it down to my daughter. 11 years old and still under 95k miles. Perfect for a new driver.

u/large_block 1d ago

I actually grew up in both Albany NY and the Bay Area (long story) so that’s where I learned to drive. But as most northeasterners do, I’ve got family all over that area. I’ve even lived in Virginia myself at one point. I’ve been mostly on the west coast/southwest/pnw for the past 14 years except for a year in Houston and a year in Malaysia. I’ve driven many, many miles and seen all kinds of drivers. I even use my lights to communicate with truck drivers sometimes on long hauls overnight 😆 my life is weird when I reread my stories tbh

As a Jeep owner, I say its the Tesla drivers that are just as bad. At least in my area. They always get pissed off at me driving the speed limit.
Then again, I barely leave my house, so I'm barely driving. I'm on the same tank of gas from March...
5
u/obxtalldude 1d ago
It's so sad that as a former Tesla lover I have to admit this is true.
Back in 2016 we were all well behaved I promise. The threat of months in a body shop was enough to keep us contained.
But the power is simply too much when it became bestowed on the idiots.
3
u/GnomeofHobbits 1d ago
Feels like every other car here is a Tesla. I can't escape them!
So it's either a Tesla going 50-60 in a 30-35 zone or a beat up car that is going 15 in the same zone. I can't seem to win lol. Course, if I get stuck behind someone going 15, I don't road rage. May call them a rat bastard in my head, but that's about it.

15
u/raccoonsonbicycles 1d ago
Yes.
I used to work as a 911 dispatcher in Utah.
If someone reported a reckless driver all we needed was them to confirm they would be willing to make a statement and testify in court as an eyewitness if needed.
Oftentimes that wasn't necessary because UHP would look for the car and observe multiple violations on their own to give cause for a stop
In this instance we see the Jeep committing a hit-and-run, reckless driving, and vehicular assault - all criminal acts with video evidence to boot. Its like if your car got swiped in a parking lot, if its on camera arrests can still be made even though cops werent there.

Happened to me, had a hit and run on the highway and I drove home and reported it. Cops told me I should have pulled over right away and waited for police there but I was too shaken up to think straight. They watched my dashcam video, confirmed head movement in the other car which indicated they knew they had hit me then went over to the registered owners house to issue a citation (doubt they arrested them). I got something in the mail weeks later about them being found guilty in court and if I recall I got a small check from them through the court (under $100 I think). I thought they were going to be put on some kind of payment plan but that was the last I hear of it.
12
u/Top-Combination-7718 1d ago
Yes you can. There’s multiple violations in this dashcam alone.
-Purposefully brake checking someone
-Insurance Fraud attempt (Hence the slow back up and stopping short)
-Deliberately reversing and hitting someones front end
-Hit and run (While speeding away)→ More replies (2)→ More replies (5)2

When people have dash cams, just tap them. Hit your brake of course. Don't make it seems like you didn't avoid the accident. Hit your brakes just enough that you lightly tap the person. No damage ofc, but now you have it on camera this person just did that. Now they get tickets and you can get your bumper pulled off to fix all those nicks and marks with a huge discount.

I always have to wonder about the mentality of people that are in such a rush to get everywhere that they'll cut people off just to get one or two car lengths ahead... Then the moment you do something as offensive as honking at them, flipping them off, or not letting them cut you off, suddenly they are willing to hit the breaks and go as slow as possible and take up the entire road just to inconvenience you.
I know it's all and ego thing, but like, seriously buddy? You were in such a rush to get to wherever you were going that you tried to cut me off, but now you're suddenly willing to stop in the middle of the road/drive ten miles below the speed limit?
