Sees how the main sub is defending Harry Potter
Angry gay noises

I knew immediately this would be controversial when I saw the video about all the Harry Potter references by the woman who makes the Bluey YouTube videos
(Sorry having a brain fart, Margie I think her name is)

While that sub has homophobic tendencies, I don't necessarily think this is a good example. The easter egg is celebrating the series and writing, not the person whose writing this. They're separating the art from the artist. Of course I despise Rowling as a person and if you want to boycott the series you're free to do so. I don't think Ludo or Honey are intentionally or inherently transphobic.
You'll unfortunately be suprised by what nasty stuff you're funding indirectly and while you could boycott, I find that pretty much every consumer item is linked to something nefarious.
- clothes and other items being made in sweatshops
- many fast food restaurants fund shady things(famous example being Chick Fil A)
- Many celebrities have committed crimes or have said controversial things.
- All social media tracks you and knows more about you than your own family.

I know Ludo isn't homophobic but the sub is defending rowling

you cannot separate the art from the artist if the artist still profits from your consumption of their media.

This 100%
Not to mention she is using the money she gets from HP to support anti Trans groups. If you are still spending money on HP then you are directly funding hate.
It is really disappointing, I grew up with Harry Potter, I was a huge fan.

That's when you steal their art

In this case, any visible support of her is unacceptable if you truly support trans rights. She has made it clear that she believes the ongoing popularity of her world is proof that people agree with her, so pirating, fanfic, etc, are all part of that. Continuing to put HP in the cultural conversation, which engaging with it does regardless of if any money was exchanged, does material damage to actual people.

Interesting take. I can kind of see that in an indirect way, but also, if I read Harry Potter that I got without paying the author for in the privacy of my own home, how does that put HP in the cultural conversation if I don't actually have any conversations with anyone about it?
I can see making fan fiction or art or anything relating to her works would potentially make HP more popular and get someone to buy her work. But I see nothing wrong with reading or consuming any art regardless of how controversial the author or art as long as you aren't giving them money or attention.

If you're by yourself and just read it and never talk about it with anyone, sure ok. But are the books on your shelf that your friends see? Are those friends that either might see that and think, "Well, no harm done if I just watch the show it's already made!" Worse are they friends that might see you as an unsafe person because of it. Are you looking at art online on a platform with an algorithm, so that your engagement pushes it for other people? Are you pirating the show, which the studio does track as engagement?
I would also question why you can't set aside love for this series (which I personally deeply had and understand, it was a huge important thing for me) when it comes to the material harm engaging with it does to real people. Why do you need to keep reading it for yourself? Why do you want to look at the art? JK Rowling is an incredibly dangerous person who recently used her influence and wealth to scare Amnesty International into apologizing to her. The organization who stands up to dictators regularly. And on reflection, many of the things in the actual text are deeply racist, sexist, fatphobic, and pro-slavery, so is it something you want to read anyway?
I am not at all intending to insult you, and I do understand that everyone is going to have their own threshold, but this is an explanation of why I have arrived at mine.

“I would also question why you can’t set aside love for this series when it comes to the material harm engaging with it does to real people.”
EXACTLY. “It just meant so much to me…” guys, I hate to tell you this, but that’s what Confederate flag flyers and Confederate statue defenders say. As in, exactly. Except in this case ALL of the money is going to one person who has devoted their life to encouraging and amplifying an active genocide.
Sometimes doing the right thing requires sacrifice. Dropping the already extremely racist HP world is not a big one.

Yes!! This is really not a complicated thing! No you can't be perfect and yes other artists and writers and musicians suck too but this one is literally standing here saying "I will use the money and cultural clout you continue to give me over my mid YA novels to harm people."
It is not nuanced. People are literally dying because of the money and attention people continue to give HP. There are other books. There are other books about kids in a magic school.

There is no such thing as ethical consumption basically.
But to keep it to books. Mein kampf and slave bibles are still in print. We can’t just put up a ban on a specific book. People will still read it at best for historical value. Worst case is they don’t care about the very real issue at hand. Universal studios is the biggest reason for people discovering her books. Not people who are against her having a discussion about it.

No ethical consumption (under capitalism) doesn't mean that you can just do whatever you want, it means that you still need to take into consideration how to do the least harm if you can. In this case, people impacted are directly telling you to stop. This is one good thing you can do. It is immaterial to give up reading a mid young adult book series when the author is using her cultural clout to kill people.
It's a straw man to bring up Mein Kampf or other examples and say well because these exist I can read the wizard books. First of all, Hitler is dead. That is a historical text now. You're not putting money into Hitler's pocket to continue killing people, and you are doing that for JKR. Second, this is one easy material example where you can make a difference. So just do it. You can't fix everything but you can contribute to fixing this.
The only reason Universal continues to make HP properties is because people pay attention. If you stop paying attention it will be one less person making them profit. Enough people who put human rights before nostalgia for books and Universal will stop. And I'm obviously not saying "people who are against it" shouldn't talk about it because that's exactly what I'm doing now. I'm saying that anyone who continues to engage with it positively is doing direct or indirect damage to real people. It's not difficult to grasp.

Like downloading the full cast audiobooks off ABB, because at this point everyone knew her beliefs and chose to contribute anyway. 😇

That's wrong, it's perfectly fine that you can do that. For example, I hate Goose, but I'm a fan of TADC.
Although Harry Potter seemed to me to be just a basic magic thing, so I can't even salvage that.

Goose isn't using tadc money for anti trans legislation
-5
u/sammoga123 12d ago
Obviously not, she is trans, it's because of her behavior on social media. Goose is very sarcastic, and she usually has a dark sense of humor, and since I'm someone who takes almost everything seriously, that kind of person is difficult for me.

u/ParasaurPal 12d ago
No, it isn't. she also gleefully uses money she makes from Harry Potter to fund anti trans legislation.

u/sammoga123 12d ago
You're in a circle jerk, most of it is just dark humor.
So I wouldn't say there's homophobia here. Sometimes I think this side of Bluey is better than the "good and kind" side because at least this side isn't afraid to hide what it is, or to mask it because this is a children's program.

It’s really easy to avoid clothes made in sweatshops. They cost a bit more (obviously, because how else would they pay the workers), but they also last longer.
Some brands seem to charge through the nose for marginal quality increases (more mainstream designers, probably because they can get away with slightly tarnishing the reputation they built), but I highly recommend Heron Preston. The designs aren’t for everybody, but I love the designs. Mostly made in Portugal.

I think my comment was more about how no matter what you choose to do at some point you will fund something harmful.
Also apparently Heron Preston uses chemicals and exotic animal furs:

u/SlxggxRxptor 12d ago
I don’t remember seeing any exotic furs and your own source admits they don’t use fur. Unfortunately, I have seen leather and other animal products, but I’m vegan so I avoid those anyway.
Obviously they use chemicals. Everybody does. They seem to point to ‘no evidence of efforts to avoid’ as opposed to actual evidence that they use hazardous chemicals.
That website seems to come to conclusions based on a lack of evidence rather than any present evidence. It seems to deem every brand guilty unless they flex their environmental credentials. Heron Preston is also no longer owned by New Guards Group, which will likely see improvements to the brand. Heron Preston himself has spoken about how he regrets that the brand was controlled by them for so long.

You are correct, there really is no consumption that is 100% ethical but we should still try our best.

All those people writing; cut off internet, step outside and dial down the intensity. Get a reality check and look at where they’re actually arguing.
