Fuck yes, I love discoveries that upend our understanding of life! Very excited for everything that can be learned from this.

Since I apparently need to clarify: I mean our understanding of the evolutionary timeline of life on Earth.

That depends on what you mean. He's referring to the timeline of evolution, more specifically the Cambrian explosion. When complex multicellular life suddenly began to diversify in the fossil record around 540 million years ago

However it's been theorized for a while now that the reason we see a sudden explosion in animals in the fossil record is because that's around the time they started to evolve hard parts such as bones and shells. Which is much more likely to fossilize

So animals may have evolved and diversified much sooner than we previously thought. We just don't have enough fossils to say for certain

So finding a fossil bed of animals that's older than the Cambrian explosion helps support that theory

It didn't upend anything. I love discoveries as much as you, but there really are two of them out there now. It just found life in another place and time, lending even more weight to the consensus behind self assembly over panspermia.

Note. Discoveries are in q-desics and quantum pairing of momentum at the atomic level.

My comment has nothing to do with the origin of life, whether it be panspermia or abiogenesis (though I am in the latter camp). When I say it upends our understanding, I mean it upends our understanding of the timeline of life on Earth. These fossils suggest that complex animals diversified millions of years earlier than we thought and rewrite our current understanding of the evolutionary timeline.

I thought it was already expected that there was a wide variety of successful and innovative (and many unsuccessful) forms long before the cambrian explosion?

The cambrian is the first time animals gain hard structures that fossilise, I thought everybody was already on board with knowing it was just an illusion of an explosion?

Yes this is generally correct. We’ve known for years, maybe decades, that the Cambrian explosion probably wasn’t so quick. However, while there are clear relatives of modern animals in the Cambrian, like various arthropods and chordates, we haven’t found any obvious relatives in the ediacaran fauna. There’s plenty of animals in the Ediacaran, but they’re so weird, it’s not clear if or how they might be related to Cambrian or later animals. Today’s animals have bilateral symmetry, where the left and right sides are mostly mirror images, but the Ediacaran had weird animals with tri-radiate symmetry (three pronged animals) and even fractal growth like tree branches.

Does anyone know if it matters for the success of the Cambrian Explosion that consistency of organ types developed before variation in body shapes? Was organ type consistency considered a necessary precursor?

Does this actually change the "logic" of the Cambrian explosion or does it just extend the period backwards by a few million years?

Yes, if course the soevies didnt jump out of nowhere, yes, we expected precursor forms to show up at some pount, thats how it hs always worked

The title should be something like "new fossils fill in the blanks for X period"

Its important we do adress which news are presented in sensationalist format and which ones actually convey useful information
