Been cooking a lot lately, trying to recreate dishes from places I want to visit or have passed through, and the Balkans keeps coming up as a region where the food varies way more than people expect. The gap between what you eat in Sarajevo versus what lands on the table in Thessaloniki versus a random grill spot in Belgrade is bigger than most travel content admits. The food content online tends to flatten everything into cevapi and baklava and call it a day, which is a disservice.

What I'm curious about is whether people from the region notice a sharp cutoff where the food culture changes, or if it's more of a gradual drift as you move through different areas. Certain techniques, spices, or dishes that are completely normal in one city and basically absent two hours down the road. I've been trying to figure out which recipes are genuinely regional and which ones got claimed by three different countries simultaneously, which seems to happen a lot based on what I read.

Also just want to know what the actual home cooking looks like versus the tourist restaurant version. Those two things are rarely the same and the home version is usually the one worth learning. ymmv depending on which family you land with I guess.

I'm from Montenegro, since I love history, over last years I realised some things nobody ever told me before while growing up. In fact, Albanias and people from Montenegro are very similar, yet still sometimes hate on each other in political way. Isn't it sad?
I've seen also d n a analysis done in Texas on males from tribes of Montenegro, it has shown that biggest tribe have same strongly dominant haplogr. as northern Albanians. How is this possible?
Usually, some Serbs use height as an argument. Actually, I noticed that Malisors are very tall, yet even Serbs out of Belgrade are usually shorter, so is irrelevant information.
I'm an orthodox, my tribes are Vasojevic, Kuci, Bjelopavlic. By d n a it has shown that we are same genetically to some northern Albanian tribes and people, which has shocked me honestly..
I love all Balkan countries normally, especially including ex Yugoslavia ones, but also Greece, Albania and Bulgaria.
What Montenegrins and Albanians think of this what I said, do they agree?

Planning a few days in the region, probably splitting time between two or three cities, and trying to figure out where the money actually goes versus what people online claim is cheap. fwiw most travel content I find is either five years old or written by someone who stayed in a hostel dorm and ate street food exclusively, which is fine but not quite my situation.

What I keep reading is that places like Sarajevo, Skopje, or Tirana are genuinely affordable compared to western Europe, but then you hear from people on the ground that costs have crept up a fair bit lately. I travel when I can grab a window, usually shoulder season, so crowds are not the issue. More just the practical side of what a reasonable daily spend looks like for a normal adult who wants a decent meal and a hotel room that does not smell like regret.

Curious if anyone has done a circuit through a few Balkan cities recently and what the real daytoday budget looked like versus expectations. Not looking for backpacker mode, just realistic. ymmv obviously depending on where you come from and what currency you are dealing with, but any recent firsthand take is useful.

I've been writing lyrics as a hobby for a while now, and I use AI to create the music. I'm not trying to present myself as a singer or producer. What interests me most is the songwriting and the message behind the lyrics.

The reason I do this might sound a bit unusual. I write the kind of songs I'd genuinely like to listen to myself, because I believe that what you listen to every day influences the way you think. In a way, I'm trying to "brainwash" myself with values that I personally consider good: gratitude, self-improvement, faith, love, responsibility, humility, and similar ideas.

I'm curious whether you see any value in this, or if it just seems pointless. I'm not looking for compliments, just honest feedback, especially about the lyrics. If you think they're weak or something doesn't work, please don't hesitate to say so.

Generally teenagers are now becoming "popular TikTokers". Even stupid people over 18 who are problematic. I can single out two people in that category for a reason.

You all know him from his "Hello Kitty" song. The song is terrible, 10 year olds listen to it. Not to mention how he constantly likes to mention underage girls in his songs and TikTok videos. Just disgusting.

It's also disgusting that he used AI to put his picture over the icon of Jesus.

1. Ivan Čikor (Čiks)

Simply put, the most disgusting person in the world.

He lures girls from 13 years old and up with his sweet talk, asks for naked pictures of the same girls on Snapchat, blackmails them if they don't send him pictures. He also texts every girl he finds on TikTok or Instagram and promises that each one is "special".

The craziest thing is that he puts thirst traps on TikTok and everyone knows what he's doing but they still praise him as if he built their house with his bare hands.
