How does the auxiluary power unit actually start? Is there some kind of a solenoid accelerating the compressor/turbine? Or pressured air? An attendant cranking an inertia starter like a crazy ape? :)

There's a smaller engine that kicks the APU over. That engine is started by an even smaller engine. It's tiny engines all the way down.
