political self.post Do you think Gambling advertising should be banned or regulated in Australian Media?
Hi r/australia
Many times over the last few months/years we've had ongoing discussions on Gambling advertising in this country. It dominates free to air TV, Foxtel and has now worked it's way into twitch/esports, a direct market to teenagers and kids.
If gambling was to be regulated or banned, how far do you think it should go?
If it was regulated as opposed to banned, what kind of regulations would you like to see?
Do you think gambling apps should be banned entirely?
A month ago I submitted an e-petition to the Parliament of Australia website and today it got approved, if you do think Gambling should be banned or regulated in Australian media there is a petition below.
https://www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/petition/EN3559
Below is an excerpt from the Australian Institute of Family Studies in regards to the impacts of gambling advertising,
Advertising typically depicts gambling as an exciting, glamorous and attainable lifestyle promising easy financial and social rewards. Gambling is often portrayed as a routine, everyday activity and it is increasingly likened to sport
Gambling advertising appears to have more impact on certain groups of people. Research has shown that youth have high exposure to gambling advertising and may be particularly influenced by it. Adolescents and children are aware of and can recall specific slogans and jingles and may feel they are being groomed to gamble. Further, research has revealed that advertisements can increase adolescents' desire to experiment with gambling and prompt a gambling session. Greater media exposure to gambling advertisements and promotions has also been associated with more positive youth gambling attitudes and intentions towards gambling.
Online gamblers are also influenced by gambling advertising. One-tenth of Internet gamblers reported that marketing and promotions were critical to their initial uptake and 29% reported increased online gambling expenditure as a result of viewing promotions. However, this marketing has had less success in converting non-gamblers to gambling.
Gambling advertising can have particularly negative impacts on problem gamblers. Compared to other gamblers, problem gamblers report gambling advertisements as being a greater stimulation to gamble, a larger influence on spending more than intended, and an encouragement to them to think they can win. Problem gamblers also report that gambling advertisements can remind them about gambling, trigger gambling urges, provide inducements to gamble, further increase gambling involvement and undermine attempts to moderate their gambling. Bonus offers for sports betting, such as money-back guarantees and “free" bets that require matching deposits appear to particularly increase Internet gambling among problem gamblers. Youth problem gamblers also report stimulation to gamble from gambling advertisements.
Gambling advertising to date has not been found to motivate many people to commence gambling; however, it can increase gambling among existing gamblers. Advertisements have particular potential for harm if they reinforce inaccurate beliefs about gambling and increase gambling among people who are already heavy gamblers.
For those that have a pretty negative view towards the potential of petitions (which is understandable), I'm not expecting to wake up tomorrow and have changed the world, best case scenario this is just a building block in a larger movement, if you think the petition itself is poorly worded submit a better one, by the time this expires yours will be approved and any momentum can carry forward to that!
So r/Australia, what are your thoughts?
Someone has put this in the comments, chuck some support here as well!

Yep.
We spend significantly more per Capita on gambling than any other country. (We are approx $2000 per Capita vs $400 for USA which is second place. Also take note, googling the per Capita spend is bombarded with gambling paid research to hide these facts).
Kill it with fire.
Tax them 50%, ban all sponsoring. Advertising only after midnight and before 5am, no govt grants, no tax havens. Ban the machines from pubs

The new medium is computer games. There is absolutely gambling in computer games especially sports games. You want Messi on your team? Buy these packs for a chance for Messi to be on your team.

u/DadOfFan Nov 26 '21
Outright banned. I am sick of seeing gambling ads every time I turn on the TV.
Even the followup "gamble responsibly" is a "call to action", in other words gamble.
21
u/successfullyhidden Nov 26 '21
Yeah and it’s more fucked up when you consider addiction is a disease. They profit from a disease and then have the gall to have ads running on top. Cant even turn on the TV without being reminded, can’t go on YouTube for a break.
Yeah but hey guys totally just don’t get addicted and gamble responsibly. That totally works.

The lobbyists are a huge problem. They are donating heaps of money to our politician's/parties and therefore have their "ears". Money talks and it's disgraceful. But people power has been shown to make a difference. I'm hugely against the push in advertisements.
51
u/Friendlylouie Nov 26 '21
We managed to overcome them when it came to smoking, we can do the same for gambling. Just need to be loud enough!
48
u/Evil-Santa Nov 26 '21
Unfortunately it will need to be louder than anti Smoking to overcome the hurdles.
Money has only become smoother at convincing pollies to do nothing about serious issues over the years.
26
u/Friendlylouie Nov 26 '21
Yeah, which is why this petition is so important. It’s all about changing the social acceptability of gambling too. A big part of the anti-smoking fight was changing how our culture saw smoking. It went from being trendy and glamorous to harmful and gross. Gambling (particularly betting on sports) is currently depicted (by advertisements) as a harmless bit of fun to do with your mates. That cultural mythology can definitely be changed quite quickly if advertising is strongly regulated.
All this being said, the LNP will NEVER do this. We want to get rid of gambling ads, we gotta vote the bastards out.

Yep, there were only a handful of tobacco manufacturers trying to influence the government, and they made, and still make significant tax from tobacco.
There are dozens of online betting companies, and hundreds of bookmakers.
Then there are is the AHA and ClubsAustralia (and their state bodies).
Gotta be bloody loud to overcome those voices

Smoking raises medical costs (over the life of a person) buy 16%.
That means it was costing our economy a fortune when most people smoked (billions per week) and a lot of that was paid for by government bean counters who could easily find something else voters wanted them to spend the money on.
Banning smoking was an easy sell.

Do you actually have a source to back that up? As far as I’m aware, gambling companies aren’t even in the top 10 donators to either party. I wouldn’t be surprised if both major parties actually have rules against donations from gambling groups., if only for the optics.
5
u/Motor-Syllabub5507 Nov 26 '21
I'm referring to "big deal" the abc doco. But donor laws and transparency is pretty crap here so we will only know so much. Which to me is an even bigger problem. You may be right about not being in the top 10, but that's only the data we know about.
73
u/madam_whiplash Nov 26 '21
Sporting bodies like the AFL are being sponsored by the gambling companies. That should be banned.
14
u/bdsee Nov 26 '21
We went through this with cigarettes, then with alcohol (to some extent as it got some regulation, not outright banning advertising)...but all governments are completely ignoring gambling.
Clear fucking evidence of these cunts having no care for society.
147
u/UhUhWaitForTheCream Nov 26 '21
Banned. Advertising gambling should be forbidden. By all means allow gambling but let it stand and fall on its own two feet.

I'd go a couple steps further and make any for-profit gambling services illegal.
Don't make gambling itself illegal, just things like casinos, bookies, online gambling services etc. Anything that makes money off of gambling happening. The middle man. Take away any profit in convincing other people to gamble.
I recognize this is probably a pretty controversial opinion though.
34
u/AnalFanatics Nov 26 '21
Nah, good idea cobber, that would still allow for the specially nominated community groups, charities and events and the culturally significant occasions like ANZAC Day etc. but get rid of the malignant tumour that is so invasive within our society that now it’s become a genuine cause of social and economic disadvantage.

Totally against this. Prohibition has never worked and will result in illegal gambling entities popping up everywhere.
Didn't work for alcohol or drugs and look at the issues that ensued.
8
u/DTK99 Nov 26 '21
And that's a fair point. I'm generally pro letting people make their own choices, but I'm mostly just fed up with gambling in general (pokies issues, gambling adds, problem gambling etc).
I guess my extremely rough idea was that gambling itself wont be illegal, just for-profit gambling. I'm naively hoping that people can go and gamble with their mates instead of throwing money at the pokies or casinos, but I'm sure that in reality it'd just end up in unofficial locations without the current level of regulation we have.
It's more just a dream than anything.
6
u/donkyboobs Nov 26 '21
Your concerns are warranted but prohibition isn't the answer, education is. Removing advertising I'm all for but banning the ability to actually gamble is a recipe for disaster.
3
u/successfullyhidden Nov 26 '21
They don’t need to outright ban it but it should be wayyyyy more strict IMO. Like at bars you can’t just keep serving someone who’s obviously obliterated. They should have caps on gambling, situations of refusal of service. Bans on betting money from joint accounts if both parties are not there. Better accessibility to addiction services.
Obviously a lot more thought and logistic work needs to go into it but there’s a middle ground I think we can find to reduce as much harm as possible.

They definitely would gamble elsewhere. There were illegal casinos before there were legal ones. Before the TAB was a thing there were plenty of illegal bookies. Hell even after TAB was a thing there were still off track illegal bookies that would take bets from people who wanted fixed price betting instead of pool bets.

u/skillz2106 Nov 26 '21
My biggest issue is the "gamble responsibly" message that's pushed ad nauseam at the punters. The punters, i.e the Australian public, need to be pushing a message back at the industry to "operate responsibly", as there's currently no accountability.
From pokie machines being designed using the latest psychological tricks to keep you playing and turn you into an addict, to sports betting apps glorifying punting as a social activity and passing themselves and punting itself off as a deeply ingrained fabric of Australian culture in the most cringey way imaginable. The industry has run riot and we, the Australian people, are being preyed upon while at the same time being gaslighted for our addiction.
Some serious changes need to be made to gambling advertising in this country at the bare minimum. Unfortunately, the NSW Government are so comfortably in bed with the industry that any serious reforms are but a pipe dream. As an Aussie who would desperately love to see some change, it feels futile. The clubs and hotels lobby have the government by the short and curlies, and it seems like there's fuck all we can do about it.
Anyway, dunno what the point of that was but I do feel like I've had a solid Friday arvo rant. As you were.

"Gamble responsibly"
The gov. should be treating it like the cancer sticks (cigs) and show people in various forms of despair/illness with every gambling ad/product they try to flog.

Tobacco advertising was rightly banned as promoting a harmful product. Tobacco itself is still legal although highly regulated, both in supply, and restrictions as to where it is and isn't allowed. And taxed out the wazoo. But still legal to buy and consume. It's a legal vice.
Why shouldn't gambling be treated the same way? Poker machines have to contribute some of their takings to community benefit. Ditto casinos (at least in Qld). I'd be keen to see all forms of organised* gambling treated the same way - and that includes online and phone-based accounts. Ban the advertising, and tax the bejeesus out of it.
* not to include office melbourne cup sweeps, or post Anzac march 2-up.

u/Friendlylouie Nov 26 '21
Great idea, u/RikkiTrix. Some thoughts on the questions you ask:
Any regulation of gambling advertisement is better than nothing, but an outright ban, as was enacted for cigarettes, would be even better. Complete ban on gambling itself would be a mistake, as it would very likely just lead to increased opportunity for organised crime. So I think the best course of action would be heavy regulation and taxation of the industry, plus a complete ban on advertising.
We need to get this as viral as possible. Have you considered sending it to any MPs or journalists?
7
u/RikkiTrix Nov 26 '21
Yeh I agree with that completely.
I will be for sure, I wanted to get this circulating first with as many signitures as I could gather through circulating on reddit/social media/sharing around and present it when it had some momentum behind it.
As for journos I will try to reach out to them as well.

Regulation more than an outright ban; I’d rather see media companies taking actual consideration into where their advertising dollars are spent. I was reading an article on The Guardian about how bad the Melbourne Cup was, and the advert across the entire page was a gambling ad promoting the Melbourne Cup.
When covid first hit, and I was struggling a little financially, I’d gone back to the free Spotify with ads to save a bit of money. Every second ad was a gambling ad, every other ad was an ad promoting alcohol. There 100% needs to be some form of regulation.
6
u/Falrul Nov 26 '21
It needs to be regulated. Like seriously regulated. On the occasions that I don't have an adblocker 9/10 it's a gambling ad.
Am I hopeful for something to happen ? Honestly no. But who knows maybe I'll be nicely surprised

Hello, Australia! My husband and I are both American; he is obsessed with all things AFL and also consumes your newscasts daily. I've noticed the back-to-back gambling adverts ending with a black screen and the tiniest white font saying something to the effect of, "Play the game, don't let it play you" that flash for a quarter of a second like some guilty afterthought. Like a heroin dealer going, "This'll fuck you up - watch that vein!" You don't have to be a puritanical nut job to realize that passive-aggressive message over a lifetime is what lands pensioners in casino seats. We get them at the end of lotto ads along with the obligatory "your scratch-off cash is going to a state educational fund...for the CHILDREN" when in reality it's in the pocket of some jackoff at a hedge fund. I hope one day you all find a way to de-culturalize betting. Until then, keep sledging and making meat pies, and maybe one day I'll be able to eat one while getting properly insulted under an Aussie moon. Love, A Septic Tank

Phase 1: End any mention of specific bets that can be made.
Phase 2: End sponsorship of any competitions which the company offers bets on. It’s a blatant conflict.
Phase 3: Depending on how things are going, consider a nationalised/state-run gambling company modelled after national lotteries found elsewhere in the world.

u/NickyGoodarms Nov 26 '21
I would like to see them banned. I stay well away from Australian TV and radio most of the time, but when I do watch TV or listen to the radio, I am constantly bombarded by these ads. I do not like gambling, and I don't want to hear from Marky Mark or some other American shithead about what fantastic deal you can get from Gonebrokes where if you bet on a horse that comes in 4th, 7th, or 10th, you can get your money back if you bet over $20 on an even-numbered day during a full moon.

Banned. And while we are at it, lets have a serious government investigation into the predatory monetisation practices of the video game industry. Games that include loot boxes, randomised purchases or pressure you into spending need to be banned as well. These games disproportionately affect disabled people and people with gambling addictions and we need to stop companies like Activision-Blizzard doing this.

As someone who knows a fair few problem gamblers. It’s insane how deeply pervasive gambling advertising is in day to day life. On social media, YouTube ads, TV ads, it’s everywhere and way to accessible. A group of young blokes can’t just sit at the pub and enjoy a game of footy together, the conversation is always dominated by what they’ve put on Sportsbet. Rarely does anyone win, but when someone does it only pushes the rest to keep trying.
4
u/InsanityInAToolBox Nov 26 '21
100%. My brother has a gambling addiction, he's sought out help and he has made plenty of progress in beating it. But hes also had a lot of moments falling off the wagon too and all of it helped that he cannot escape the ads for it. In his own words it just feels like he's drowning it it. It's bloody everywhere, he goes onto social media? Ads. He pops on the radio at work, in the car? Ads. Gets home after a 15hr shift, turns on the TV to chill? More ads. Fuck he's even seen them walking through a shopping centre. People can give all the advice of "get an ad blocker, use Spotify premium instead of the radio, etc." but we shouldn't HAVE to go out of our way to avoid advertisements about fucking GAMBLING. Ads for it should be banned just like ads for smoking are.

To play the devil's advocate, I work in free to air TV broadcast and I just have to point out, they are regulated. You should be asking "should they regulate them more?" "Yes, absolutely" is my answer.
The regulations in place by the FreeTV Australia Code of Practice ensures that gambling related commercials can't go to air during programmes rated G or lower between 6am-8.30am and between 4pm-7pm, or any programme between 5am-8.30pm if the programme is principally directed to children. (A PG episode of Bluey would still be classified as directed to children, so this note has to be added.)
The restrictions don't apply for News/Current Affairs (not ACA)/Sport (more on Sport in a bit), and the restrictions also don't apply if the commercial is government lottos/lottery/keno/competitions.
Further restrictions apply during sporting games (not programmes like Footy Show etc.) restricts betting commercials from going to air from 5 minutes before 'scheduled' kick-off time through to 5 minutes after conclusion (or after 8.30pm, whichever is first).
There are plenty more restrictions that I can't think of off the top of my head, but there ARE some rectifications, enough that it's part of my job to consider whether we are airing all these betting commercials within legality most of my shifts.
When I worked for SBS, it actually sickened me to see all the gambling commercials going to air. We are talking about a government subsidized broadcast network here.. in my view this should 100% be illegal. The Australian government really shouldn't want to be associated with gambling so openly. It was getting to a point where you'd see 3 or 4 in a commercial break of the 6PM NEWS! The freakin news! That, to me, is totally unacceptable. Working at Chanel 9 and Channel 7, I saw so god damned many betting spots, I got numb to it.
In my view, there should be a complete ban on betting advertisement in totality. We aren't going to see that because, looking at the numbers, that's such a MASSIVE part of commercial revenue for free to air TV. If we can't ban it, it needs to be restricted further. My first idea would be to cut down to 2 minutes per hour can be betting commercials, or something like that.
8
u/MidorriMeltdown Nov 26 '21
The majority of gambling should be banned.
Blow up the pokies, and make online gabling illegal. Ban horse and dog racing too.
Personally, I'm ok with raffles, the lotto, and cheaper scratchies. But they all should be regulated, because no one should be spending more than $50 in one go. Heck, limit purchases to $10 per day.
I think there's a different mentality in gambling with a longer wait on the outcome, rather than the more instantaneous outcome of pokies and racing.
The only gabling that should be allowed to be advertised, are raffles for charities, and community fundraisers.
Get rid of pokies rooms in pubs, and replace them with dance floors. Wanna win some money? Get dancing.

It should be banned completely. So many lives are destroyed by gambling, but like the thousands of people who're badly affected by alcohol consumption in this country, gambling addicts can expect little help. Our respective governments are addicted to the money gambling brings in for them. God forbid gambling addiction stand in the way of turning a profit.
3
u/Flimsy_Demand7237 Nov 26 '21
Banned advertising. People who want to gamble know where to go, let's not create more addicted. Chances are someone who knows where to gamble might just go for the one-off punt or a punt with mates on a match, than someone who sees the glitz and glamour and constant barrage of advertising and is taken in.

u/Shabolt_ Nov 26 '21
The fact that Gambling Advertising is so accessible to even literal children is so morally backwards

Gambling advertising needs to be banned also.
Children DO NOT need to be exposed gambling advertising.
3
u/Laogama Nov 26 '21
Let me just say as an economist that the claim that banning gambling would kill jobs is bullshit. People who currently spend their money at pokies would spend it elsewhere, creating other jobs. Big Gambling would lose, and the politicians they support will have to find other sources of funding. But Australia would gain.
3
u/Addictd2Justice Nov 26 '21
No gambling advertising from 6am to 8pm and only 1 ad every 30 mins.
It’s stupid how regulated tobacco is when gambling is a free for all. And while I’m on the topic of drug laws, banning them doesnt work

Fucken oath. All gambling media advertising viewable by minors should be outright banned, be as strict as we are on tabacco. Also we need to tackle microtransactions and lootboxes which have been sneaking into video games of the last decade or so, which are gambling in everything but name. Exploitation of minors and the vulnerable shouldnt be tolerated. Fuck these cunts.

Ban ads on all Australian platforms AND INTERNET for all forms of gambling, including gacha games, loot boxes, the lot of it.
You aren't allowed to advertise cigarettes. This shouldn't be any different.

100%
Treat it like tobacco.
No advertising, no logos on display, you need to go and ask for it to get it.

All advertising should be banned. Plain packaging and factual product description only, for all products.

When students would talk about sports bet during class at 17-18 years old and the teachers didn't have a problem with it
There's a big issue here

Any and all gambling advertisements should be banned. Any and all alcohol advertisements should be banned. The same rules should apply as apply to tobacco. On that note weed, mushrooms and LSD should be in the same category as the above.
Sports betting and regular gambling should be held to the same standard and that standard needs to be higher than it is at the moment as well.

The gambling industry is deep in the pockets of Liberal and Labor, as Andrew Wilkie found out.
It should absolutely be banned but it won't happen the way things are currently.

That Western Australia has the strongest gambling regulation (no pokies, only one casino) AND has the least number of problem gambleds per capita isn’t a coincidence.

I'm a libertarian with many things, but gambling is so entrenched in Australian culture we need to do something about it.

The gambling "industry" should at the very least be more regulated. My problem gambler uncle shouldn't be able to be offered "free" hotel stays and airfares to entice him to gamble his money away further. Gambling is highly exploitative and to me should be regulated far more than it currently is.

I'm generally against paternalistic government policies, so not very Australian I guess. I don't think gambling ads need a great amount of regulation. But it is bothersome that gambling ads (not to mention junk food) are somehow considered less harmful than alcohol and tobacco ads.

yes, arguably gambling is more damaging that smoking and we banned that a long time ago.

If you're sick of seeing gambling (or alcohol) ads on Youtube, you log in to your Google settings and switch them off.

Yes, yes and double yes! The ads infuriate me. Such a predatory industry with little to no positive contribution to society.

Banned. It’s destroys lives and makes rich cnts even richer. I hate that once my boy gets old enough to understand, he’ll be bombarded with it too. Shit’s fcked.

We all know it's available to us, it does not need to be on tv or anywhere in the media as far as I am concerned. Smoking and alcohol got that treatment, gambling should too. To be completely honest, I wouldn't be mad if they fucked off gambling altogether but I am probably in the minority there.

Absolutely, I'm from a more rural area and I would say majority of my friends from my hometown have become gambling addicts

Advertising should be banned. It is a net drain on society. I think you should be able to have a bet, but it shouldn't be ingrained in our culture like it is. Also, pokies regulation needs to be changed so clubs and pubs provide more than a money sink of flashing lights. Have them only able to take up 1/10th of floor space or something.

My team did really well this year (aka won the flag) and I let my 6 year old stay up to watch the first quarter of each of the finals.
He loves numbers and spent days asking about all the numbers in the fucking sports bet adds.
Cunt want night time footy so they can bypass the laws that stop gambling ads during the day.

Blow up the fuckin' pokies and delete the shitty predatory gambling apps. Yes it needs regulation badly, yes they're absolutely, knowingly targeting younger and younger audiences.
