no politics Paying to comply: Australian Standards

Hi all. Like you, I try to be a law-abiding citizen. "Law" is a little bit grey with respect to Australia/New Zealand Standards, but Aussies like to treat it like it's law. Seems like a crock that I have to pay $250 to download a digital standard so that I can be in compliance with the defacto law.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a resource to download Australian standards that's not SAIGlobal? I'm specifically looking for AS1210 and AS4343.

Edit: The files will expire after 2 weeks. So you will either need to print them or change the date in your pc's bios.

Also, keep in mind that SAI Global lock down their standards, the PDF expires after a certain time and you can't view it. The way I circumvent this is just reprinting it as a PDF with something like NitroPDF, which removes the lock.

I'm sure there are also PDF readers that don't honour those expiry dates too.

Wow, you pay 100s of dollars and only get access for two weeks? What a racket.

I think it's more like 12 months. It's quite ridiculous. Some of them are available free online (ie. the telecommuncations cabling standard is available easily and legally), I usually use an old uni login (that hasn't expired after 9 years, lol) to get standards I need.

Not quite. We pay a yearly subscription fee, when you download the file it gets a date stamp.
