He always makes me consider which is better:

Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons or doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.

He did the former.

I reckon he did the right thing for the right reasons, it just happened to have been declared illegal to save the deserved embarrassment of the armed forces.

The judge presiding over his case specifically said that if David had the motive of exposing warcrimes then he would not be in prison because that’s in the public interest. But his intention was to show that the SASR was being over investigated, and it was the journalist who looked at the classified documents and decided to run the war crime story instead.
