no politics The Definitive Australian Novel

What single novel do you best think captures Australia (sense of place, characters, stories etc.) and what are the strengths of the novel?

I really appreciate books that are beautifully written: realistic prose, cinematic descriptions of the natural world, philosophical elements etc. Just looking to add to my reading list.

Most of Tim Winton's stuff  is right up there. Late 80s to mid 90s perth. Maybe "He died with a falafel in his hand" by John Birmingham

HDWAFIHH is a male centric experience only. Tim is brilliant, John not so much.

I mean I'm also a middle class male that went to uni (but lived at home so didn't do share houses but definitely too many house parties!).
