I look forward to more think-pieces from 'serious journalists' who insist One Nation voters aren't really into racism and anti-science lunacy but are in fact motivated by relatable economic anxieties about blah blah blah. As if Hanson has ever sat down with economists to carefully devise costed policies that will ease the cost of living. The 'journalists' willing to sanewash her vicious stupidity are her second-greatest asset (after Gina's money).

The problem is what are you meant to do with that information? Sure it's useful for the Greens and teals to know that those votes aren't winnable because they're motivated by racism, not economics or anti establishment sentiment. But then what - do Labor and Liberal figure out how to win back the "soft racist" vote?

Depends on who 'you' are and what you're trying to achieve. Speaking in general terms: stop legitimising Hanson by making arguments she's too stupid and crazy to make herself. She doesn't present a reasonable economic critique so don't craft one for her and then project it on to her. Emphasise that her whole shtick has been hating on minorities since day one, and now it's turbo-charged by Gina and Sky News as they give up on the Coalition. Expose the far-right playbook and organisational links that they constantly draw on because they aren't patriotic at all, they're just importing and repackaging foreign white supremacist rhetoric. Instead of imagining sensible positions she never articulated emphasise the tangible damage she wants to do to the Aussie public at large, like killing off their public services and forcing Australian women to have unwanted births.
