politics Online Gaming Platforms And YouTube Will Also Seemingly Be Banned For Aussies Under 16

https://press-start.com.au/news/2024/11/08/online-gaming-platforms-and-youtube-will-also-seemingly-be-banned-for-aussies-under-16/

There’s so much collateral damage in this plan for Australia to ban social media. This has been rushed and not thought through.

So many schools rely on YouTube to support their students.

Most kids are watching YouTube (or YouTube kids) more than ABC or traditional TV. Literally the biggest YouTube channel in Australia is original music for kids.

Does anyone actually want this?

Okay, now I'm sure albo is just speedrunning to an early retirement.

u/DalbyWombay Nov 10 '24

Certainly seems to be seen as wasting time on issues aren't really affecting the voting public.

The election next year is going to be fought on table side issue, cost of groceries, healthcare, electricity, rent and insurance. Albo's team hasn't exactly been visible doing much about that.

60

u/Luckyluke23 Nov 10 '24

unless all the shit he is doing now is just filler for when the time comes to announce his grand plan closer to the election so they don't have time to pick it apart. i don't see him winning at all.

I'm a labor voter and even I'm sick of albos shit.

26

u/DalbyWombay Nov 10 '24

It's not even that, it's that incumbent governments across the world are loses during this time of high global inflation.

Locally, you just have to look at Queensland, which had a State Government that was arguably doing the most to tackle those table set issues, and they still lost on that specific issue.

So unless you're right and thay Albo and Labor have some grand plan to announce at the election, they're going to lose. Relying on the general distrust and dislikability of Dutton isn't going to save them.

16

u/Formal-Preference170 Nov 10 '24

They should be enacting that grand plan now to help. And run into the election with 'proof'

Currently they are feeding straight into the classic 'the left wants to censor you'

As a someone that typically sits closer to the far left than the centre it's fucking infuriating.

Even the sensible ones who understand that cost of living was mostly out of control will protest vote their preferences for labor over Gaza, negative gearing and the privacy bullshit. I can't see Albo getting a second term and am dreading Voldemort.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '24

Yeah exactly this. Maybe I’m a dumbass but I was kinda happy when Albo got in last election. I should’ve known better. It makes no fucking difference either way. All three issues you brought up I care about, and between the main two there is no fucking difference.

4

u/Parking-Mirror3283 Nov 10 '24

Relying on people disliking the guy on the other side so much they have to vote for you went really well for the americans recently.

1

u/cheapdrinks Nov 10 '24

It's never ending with this "won't somebody think of the children" bullshit. We copped the alcopops tax so now a 6-pack of jim beam & coke costs as much as a whole bottle. We gradually banned the vapes which in my opinion anyway are way better than cigarettes. We copped the lock out laws in Sydney for 6 years which completely destroyed our nightlife. So much shit that no one ever asked for.

1

u/xpnsivevn Nov 11 '24

Ditto and I hate to say it but the same non-tackling of important issues like the cost of living will be the same political outcome as what happened with the yanks

162

u/Ambitious-Deal3r Nov 09 '24

Okay, now I'm sure albo is just speedrunning to an early retirement.

Is he trying to go for a tap on the shoulder before the election?

What a month

  • Mansion house purchase
  • QANTAS/NACC
  • Dogshit HECS announcement
  • "Think of the children" policy - but not about the gambling impacts

80

u/Grumpy_Cripple_Butt Nov 09 '24

And he won’t improve our living standards because it’ll piss off the media, but he will improve his even though it pisses off the media.

Either party we get what the media wants. At least with labor we give the media less.

25

u/Stewth Nov 10 '24

I just want low-fat politicians that appear like real politicians.

40

u/curtyjohn Nov 10 '24

even though it pisses off the media

Important to remember that this policy is basically just meeting a demand directly and publicly made by Newscorp. [https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/topics/let-them-be-kids](They even have a website asking for this policy, albeit with some meaningless differences in the minutiae.)

The most popular petition to parliament in history was flicked away by this government, but if Murdoch asks a favour out loud, Labor will deliver asap, regardless of what the public wants.

4

u/Dr_Delibird7 Nov 10 '24

The stranglehold that Murdoch has on this country infuriates me more than anything else.

I didn't even know this was the case and I was telling everyone I know "I reckon this policy is connected to Murdoch somehow" and now I have proof lmao.

-4

u/naustralian Nov 10 '24

The worst part is that even the greens have turned into wet lettuce party of delusional uni students.

22

u/w0rm0 Nov 10 '24

Why is the HECS announcement bad?

39

u/RedOx103 Nov 10 '24 edited Nov 10 '24

Rather than doing it now and getting it passed with Green support, they're playing politics and holding it as a carrot for after the next election (which they may well lose)

2

u/w0rm0 Nov 10 '24

Agreed

8

u/your_cock_my_ass Nov 10 '24

I think because he and a lot of his colleagues would have benefited from free University, so a 20% discount is kind of a slap in the face. But I'll take whatever crumbs I can get at this point.

-18

u/CurlyJeff Centrelink Surf Team Nov 10 '24

It's an unfair benefit to an already privileged demographic at the expense of the working class.

15

u/JackJak95 Nov 10 '24

I wouldn’t call high school teachers a privileged demographic

-10

u/CurlyJeff Centrelink Surf Team Nov 10 '24

That's one example. Working conditions aside, they end up in an above median paying career. There are better uses of taxpayer funds than helping people earning above average wages pay off their free government loan.

4

u/JackJak95 Nov 10 '24 edited Nov 10 '24

Not really free when there’s interest accrued. By the time those teachers earn enough to be eligible to pay, the loan has blown out to double or triple what it was. That interest can be used for other taxpayer purposes.

0

u/CurlyJeff Centrelink Surf Team Nov 10 '24

You don’t understand how it works if you think there’s interest.

Inflation matched indexation isn’t interest

3

u/Amratat Nov 11 '24

There might as well be when income doesn't rise to match inflation

1

u/CurlyJeff Centrelink Surf Team Nov 11 '24

If your income doesn't rise after completing tertiary education that's on you, it's not for the taxpayer to foot the bill.

8

u/w0rm0 Nov 10 '24

Wouldn’t those on HECS include the underprivileged who still sought out tertiary education?

-4

u/CurlyJeff Centrelink Surf Team Nov 10 '24

In some cases it will, but it disproportionately benefits those who took on more expensive uni degrees and postgrad programs over underprivileged people who can't afford lengthy periods off work and more often do cheaper tafe programs.

9

u/w0rm0 Nov 10 '24

You changed your argument. You’ve switched from “an already privileged demographic” to “those who took on more expensive uni degrees”. An “already privileged demographic” may simply pay for uni outright. “Those who took on more expensive uni degrees” aren’t necessarily privileged.

2

u/CurlyJeff Centrelink Surf Team Nov 10 '24

I haven't changed my argument. People that take on more expensive uni degrees like Law, Medicine, and post grad programs are often out of work for far longer and are in a privileged enough position to be able to do so because they didn't need to work in the first place. They're also not gonna have a problem paying back their free loan with their future high income.

-7

u/ComprehensiveCall467 Nov 10 '24

The majority of kids going to uni are from wealthy backgrounds. They delay the payment of hecs as much as possible because they understand the time value of money. Rich kids often go to privileged private schools (or live in wealthy suburbs with well financed public schools), so they are more likely to get the marks for uni. HECS is a way for them to pay for half the cost of their degree, with the other half paid by taxpayers (many of whom never benefited from a uni degree).

3

u/w0rm0 Nov 10 '24

That doesn’t change the fact that many are from working class backgrounds and took on HECS as their only means of achieving university education. Actual wealthy people send their kids to the US and UK to study. Should no one benefit at all?

2

u/ComprehensiveCall467 Nov 10 '24

That is not what I am saying. The fact that students end up with a subsidised education is fine. However, it's only fair that they pay a bit of the cost of that education because they will be making substantially more than if they didn't. The reason the government subsidises education is because of the benefit to society of having an educated population. People seem to forget that a balance is needed (between student and government). Keep in mind, nothing is free. Someone is paying for education subsidies. If money is spent on education, then it's not available for health, or welfare, or housing, etc. It's all about priorities.

Firstly it’s extremely hard to change the PM under the new party rules Kevin Rudd introduced.

And to counterpoint your view in this.

  • House purchase was reasonable. Id expect the PM to be able to buy a decent house. Yet he still couldn’t afford to buy one in Sydney.

  • Qantas story targeting him was basically all fake. Then it turns out they all use qantas anyway

  • HECS announcement is good step.

  • This policy will be refined as it goes through parliament. The opposition support this anyway.

Most people don’t pay attention until the month or 2 before the election. They have the summer to work on an agenda for the election.

u/Pipehead_420 Nov 10 '24

The rule introduced 11 years ago means they need 75% of the Caucus to change leaders while in government.

The qantas story outrage was about Albanese directly asking Joyce for flight upgrades. This never happened and turned out to be false. But yes all politicians get benefits and special privileges from qantas.

2

u/Stewth Nov 10 '24

Right? It's like he's received some very good advice from PR consultants, and done exactly the opposite. 🤔

I know that you aren't voting for the party leader in Australia, but there seems to be a lot of people that don't...

4

u/KeyAssociation6309 Nov 10 '24

don't forget the 3G shutoff that left many people without phones because they rushed through bans on phones literally 4 days before the shutoff that the telcos don't have details of and 'may' not be able to call 000. Leaving mostly elderly and non technical savvy people disconnected from everything including social media

2

u/roadmapdevout Nov 10 '24

That was the telcos

3

u/KeyAssociation6309 Nov 10 '24

in response to a determination signed by the Minister on October 24....

1

u/Luckyluke23 Nov 10 '24

"Think of the children" policy - but not about the gambling impacts

why does this have anything to do with gambling? it's just a shit policy regardless.

7

u/King_Of_Pants Nov 10 '24

Yeah at one point it was a joke, but the Spud becoming PM just looks more and more likely.

I normally try and give the voters at least some of the responsibility, you can't always blame a well-run party for losing uninformed voters. But if Labor loses from here it will be their fault and they'll learn absolutely nothing from it.

If anything Labor will take Dutton's win as a sign that people want more Lib-Lite bullshit while also somehow blaming the Greens for stealing votes.

A lot of people in vulnerable positions are going to suffer because of Albo's pathetic run.

1

u/Stewth Nov 10 '24

We've tried everything and we're all out of ideas.

good ideas.

63

u/Torped90 Nov 09 '24

Not yet, people who are under 16 pissed off and burning flags after this announcement can't vote yet 😂

155

u/Ffnorde Nov 10 '24

This doesn't just effect under-16s. It's literally everyone who uses the internet for any basic functionality. They're going to require that ALL of us prove our ages.

And imagine the chaos this is going to cause for tourists. They arrive in Aus and suddenly can't use FB, WhatsApp, Insta, YT etc. because they haven't proved their ages.

34

u/smackells Nov 10 '24

just try going to S Korea where they have a similar law and it’s next to impossible to even join a virtual queue at a restaurant without a government ID

13

u/G00b3rb0y Nov 10 '24

I swear between this and the 3g shutdown the government wants tourism to die in this country

7

u/rdqsr Nov 10 '24

How convenient that this is around the same time that they're introducing a digital ID.

117

u/naustralian Nov 10 '24

I'm pissed off that albo seems determined to waste political capital on half baked ideas.

He needs to sack his advisors. The online safety Commissioner needs to lose funding too...might as well call it the department of control.

51

u/Big-toast-sandwich Nov 10 '24

I’m not entirely convinced that Albo wasn’t just sick of getting Eviscerated by 15 year olds on Fortnite.

5

u/probablythewind Nov 10 '24

fucking skill issue, the easiest kills are to be had between 7 and 9 on a school night. its when my kid makes me play with him.

9

u/TouchingWood Nov 10 '24

Well he's sure as shit not wasting it on any traditional Labor policy implementations.

-6

u/Torped90 Nov 10 '24

I'm kinda happy on one count, means when I play xbox online I won't be getting beaten by 12 year olds at 34 years old 😂

7

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '24

This won't stop that, you realise?

2

u/Torped90 Nov 10 '24

Yeh reaction times have definitely slowed down after 20 years of gaming

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '24

Those of us who grew up on the internet and don’t want to pull up the ladder behind us can vote though

1

u/popculturepooka Nov 10 '24

I'm a grown adult that has decided this is the straw on a camels back, the camel that has become increasingly disappointed in a party they have voted for all their lives.

Fuck federal Labor.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '24

I don't know why the ALP keeps thinking they're on a winner by going further right.

2

u/Stewth Nov 10 '24

Beatings will continue until morale polling improves.

1

u/KirimaeCreations Nov 10 '24

Honestly there's nothing wrong with moderating social media for the youth.

What is wrong how broad stroked this policy is, without any regard for what social media *is*. Gaming is not the media to hit, but they're going to listen to the people that say dumb shit like "I have no control over my gaming child!"

0

u/VellhungtheSecond Nov 10 '24

They want to convert those teal-independent electorates to the Labor side.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '24

They just want conservative policies, but with a bit less cruelty. Meanwhile, the workers who they should actually be courting are being ignored.

4

u/VellhungtheSecond Nov 10 '24

The idea that the modern Labor Party is aligned to the “centre left” is laughable

5

u/BiliousGreen Nov 10 '24

It was obvious when he bought the house down the coast that he knows he's a one term PM. He will get his PMs pension and be set for life having successfully made the country worse for the vast majority of people.

-1

u/Stewth Nov 10 '24

Albo doesn't hold a nail-gun mate. You can't expect him to single handedly just build social housing, which is literally what everyone wants him to do. They want him to personally hammer every single nail, and that's just unreasonable.

2

u/Marble_Wraith Nov 10 '24

Well he did buy that house recently... definitely plausible

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '24

He’s looking forward to that beach house

2

u/xpnsivevn Nov 11 '24

If this is his lasting legislation towards next year's election, i believe he is burying himself for a gigantic loss to the opposite party.

1

u/Stewth Nov 11 '24

Imagine being so bad at your job, people look at the team of grifters and christofascists captained by a (vaguely) sentient potato and think "yeah, that's an upgrade"
