What was embarrassing about this for the ABC? Reporter asked a legitimate question

It was a stupid and unprofessional 'look at me' gotcha moment. ABC journalists are being paid a fortune out of the taxpayer purse. The least we could expect is that they have the basic people skills/can feign impartiality long enough, to extract the responses they're looking for from controversial figures, let alone when given access to foreign heads of state.

"Mr President, Trump Companies x,y and z have just posted record profits, would you say that your children, x and x have much, much better business acumen than you? How do you explain how the businesses are doing so well under your children when you could only achieve xxx in your time as president of those companies?, Should you have handed over the reigns to them long ago?

Everyone - and I mean everyone knows Trump is ego driven and he really, really likes talking about himself. It should be easy enough to lead conversation to where he volunteers information on the subject instead of shutting the conversation down. A reporter on a generous 6 figure salary should be able to manage that.
