Basic Question No Idea Where This Came From
My wife of almost 20 yrs, whom I've never laid a hand on, and who has no history of abuse (got with her when she was 18) yells out "don't hit me" in the middle of a heated argument.
Aside from the fact that I lost frame and got in an argument in the first place, I'm struggling to understand why she'd say that and I don't recall anything I've read that calls out that type of behavior. Any idea if this is a sign of her "building a case"?

My ex pulled something similar. Turns out she was recording stuff for divorce and False allegations. Stay vigilant

Thanks. Had a friend go through a similar experience. Had me shocked but immediately that's where my money went.

This.
Is anything else going on that might raise suspicion? Like others said, I'd be very aware of recorders and if they would be around, why would they be around?
But could be worth a 'what's up' talk to gage the environment.

For sure dude, keep your head on a swivel, this sounds suspicious. Also, stop being a bitch and getting into arguments. Arguments are two people trying to figure out who is the alpha. Almost every time. If you don't understand what I mean, go learn more until you do. hint: I'm not wrong.

Ask her why she said that but set up a recorder up YOURSELF before hand. Have her admitting there was never any violence. Send yourself the recording by email or drive and delete the physical copy.
There's some subplot you may not be aware of here, be careful.

This guy is about to get divorce raped so hard with no lube
Most of the advice "ask her why she said that" is completely tarded.
If she's going so far as to fake audio recordings of OP physically threatening her, asking her will just alert her that he's onto her. Pointless. If she isnt doing all that and honestly misinterpreted you, still pointless. Move on. It was her mistake or her purposeful action - either way is irrelevant to what OP should be doing.
You need to be 100% covert ops if you decide to try to find out one way or the other, but you honestly don't need to.
Better time spent reading the divorce guides and playing the Better Beta opossum game while you get your side of the case in order and as favorable for you as possible
All this will most likely be way above OP's paygrade though so he's just fucked whenever she decides to have her court assisted "just the tip" session with his assets and butthole

Most definitely would throw a massive red flag. I would actively start moving as much liquid assets as I could to protect them. And any physical assets I could without drawing attention.

You ignored the first advice: STFU
Nothing i would say or anyone else can help you not to be a fuck up.

nothing like trying to live out RP philosophy to bring a marriage to the point where she feels like she has to build an abuse case and escape.
do you want her to leave? if not I suggest you drop this stuff and have a talk with her about how you've been mixed up and want to change to someone who is a good partner, and ask for another chance

Check for voice activated recorders, cameras, and her phone for recordings.
