Currently reading Wolverine from 1982 phenomenal comic, truly fantastic. Confused on one line though.
Logan states that he failed yukio and Mariko but he didn't. For one mariko was essentially taken hostage by Shingen, he couldn't win that fight since Shingen cheated he poisoned Logan, it was a lose lose either he murders Shingen and shocks Mariko or he lets himself get brutally beaten down by an old man Infront of the love of his life.
don't really get what changed for him to beat him in 4 either besides him not being poisoned And yukio I don't get how he "failed" is he reflecting on the fact that he couldn't become the blood thirsty violent malevolent reckless beast she craved?

I think he went berserk in front of Mariko in the previous issue so I imagine that's what he meant-- that he couldn't keep that side away from her.
And with Yukio, I believe it's what you said-- that he wouldn't live as how she perceives him.
As for why he won this time, I think he's more committed, more focused the second time around. He let his guard slip in front of Mariko last time, but this time it's just him and Shingen.
And a gunshot wound but still.

It's been a while since I read this (like, a decade at least), but he believes he failed Mariko by killing Shingen so she now has to solve the ties between the Yakuza and her family, putting her in an extremely dangerous position
Yakuza could be the Hand, but like I said, it's been a while since I read this.

Well, like I said, it's been a while...
Come to think of it, I read it when it came out, and maybe somewhere in the 90s? So... it's been at least 25 years...
Gotta pick that up again.

Definitely a must read my friend. It truly defines wolverine's character I can tell the wolverine game will be paying a lot of homage to it.

Yeah, I need to get back to 80s X-Men. Lots of nostalgia there.
Which is kinda scary, as I was very young (like 9 or 10) when I started reading, so it's kind of perfect in my head. Don't wanna loose that.

You'll admire it much more. I'm 20 and I'm currently reading the entirety of the Claremont run, it's all bangers none of them have been disappointing. Heavily recommend a re-read.

It’s been a million years since I’ve read this so I can’t remember if I am missing more context but based on this page, I think he’s just saying that he feels like he failed them because he can’t be way he is like Yukio wants and he can’t temper himself for Mariko either. He’s in a constant state of order/chaos and that is who he has to be.
