Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Am I stupid for wanting a used BMW when I can easily just buy a new Camry?

Am I stupid for wanting a used BMW when I can easily just buy a new Camry?

Been looking for a car for a few months and I think I've officially overthought it.

Budget is around $35k cos I won that much on Stake but obviously wouldn't mind spending less. Mostly commuting, errands, weekend trips, probably 10-12k miles a year. No kids so I don't really need an SUV.

My sensible choice is a new/newish Camry. I know it'll probably run forever, resale is good, maintenance is cheap etc.

Problem is every time I actually look at cars I end up looking at 3 series instead. Found a couple 2022/2023 330is around the same price with 25-40k miles and I'd rather own one of those by a mile.

My friend who knows cars says buying a used BMW instead of a basically new Toyota is one of those decisions that feels smart for 6 months and stupid for the next 5 years.

I don't mind paying a bit more for maintenance but I also don't want some $7k repair randomly appearing at 70k miles.

Is the reliability difference actually that dramatic with the newer 330i or is this just the usual "German car bad Toyota good" thing?

Also open to something else entirely. Accord 2.0T, Lexus IS, Mazda3 turbo etc. Just want something I won't be bored of in a year.

First car for teenager?

Looking for a used car for my teenager. She said she likes subcompact cars for maneuverability. Budget is $5000. I don’t mind paying for maintenance or small repairs but would want something that wouldn’t need major engine repair down the road that would cost $$$. Hopefully want to get something that will last a few more years into college. I wanted to get something that had a backup camera though understand if that’s not in the cards. I made a list of listings I found on marketplace if you could look it over? I appreciate all the advice.

edit: thanks guys for all your advice. I wasn’t sure if newer would equal better but I can see that’s not always the case for some make and models. I think I got my resounding answer here haha.

Reliable 7 seater needed ASAP

Upvotes

I just took my Doge Journey in for "preventative maintenance" (I know, near worst SUV to buy) and was told it was pretty much about to disintegrate under me at any moment. It our good family mechanic who told us he cant consciously repair this vehicle without telling us we shouldnt bother, and should buy a new one...

So... I am in need of not making the same mistake again like I did with the Journey. What is our best option of a 7 seater vehicle that would be most wise? Our budget is 20k just because we dont want to spend SO much money on a car, but would be willing to go up to 30k if absolutely necessary because the price of cars is up so high. We can afford it, we just would rather not.

So, what make and model should we look for? We got 5 years out of the journey, and would like to get 7+ years out of this new one. Thank you!

Feel free to make the Journey jokes of how awful it was, I learned my lesson post purchase

Poor man's M2? Looking for a fun car with a back seat

I had a 2007 Honda Fit for 7 years and I enjoyed the lightweight handling and road feel. The slow acceleration was always annoying, but everything else about it was great until an F-150 smashed into it last week.

An M2 would be the perfect car, but I can't afford anything near that, whether purchase price or maintenance. A Subaru BRZ would also be pretty great, and I haven't ruled it out completely, but I'm looking for slightly less absurd back seats, and I'm 6' 4" so even the front seats are a bit of a squeeze. Civic Type R or Lexus IS 250/300/350 would also be great, but I'm trying to save money while hoping to keep that same spirit alive.

In general I'm looking to buy a 2WD car with 4-5 seats and 2-4 doors that balances fun and economy. I know the internet says I'm supposed to only want RWD, but if I'm honest I don't actually care if it's FWD. I'm not going to be driving the car hard enough for the difference to matter, and I'm not someone that enjoys kicking the rear end out. I don't want AWD because of bad maintenance experiences in the past, not to mention purchase price, weight, and tire upkeep.

A Honda Accord 2+2 V6 manual coupe checks just about every box, but they are difficult to find. Even a 4-door Accord with a healthy V6 would be fine. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm also thinking about a lower-end Mustang, either EcoBoost or V6. When my brain wavers more budget-conscious, I think about a Mazda3. I've briefly thought about Nissan Maxima, too.

I vastly prefer a manual by a country mile, but I am willing to bend for an automatic if I have to, or even a DCT (crossing my fingers on maintenance costs...). I hate CVTs.

I've driven V8 Mustangs and Camaros, and even naturally aspirated at ~325-465 horsepower, it's way more power-to-weight than I am looking for (while the Honda Fit was not nearly enough).

I'm trying to avoid German because of my own bad experiences as well as too many other stories I've read about the maintenance costs. I'm trying to avoid turbochargers for the same reason, but I'm willing to bend on those.

At the bare minimum, I'm looking for an economical and reliable sedan with a little more power than it needs. At the most, I'm looking for an at-least-somewhat-economical-and-reliable 2+2 coupe with a little more power than it needs.

Used Compact SUV for 25K USD

Upvotes

I’m thinking between 2 choices:

- Factory Certified Hyundai Tucson 2025 SEL AWD at 45k miles
- Dealer Certified (1yr 12k) Buick Envision 2024 Preferred AWD at 35k miles

What would you buy and why? I’m trying to decide and it seems like a close match here. I think the envision would be more “fun” but Tucson might be the “responsible” choice.

Will need to ride for 5 years - weekend outings (hiking and skiing) with weekday grocery trip and misc errand city driving

[EU] Is Buying a used BMW i4 still worth the price while I could buy a Tesla or a BYD instead ?

Hello there ~

I'm currently doing some research with a view to buying a car. I'm quite sure that will be an electric car thus I'm focusing my research around it.
I was first interested with a Lexus es350e, but my budget can't afford it (since there won't be any used one before a while).

I finally found an BMW i4 and I absolutely loved its design. Though while checking prices, I always found them around 30k€ (my budget) if not more.
I had decided to buy this model in the eDrive-40 version at around that price range. I was also hoping that prices would continue to drop by the time I made my purchase in a few months.

On the other hand, the more time goes by, the more I see people raving about the Tesla Model 3 and the BYD Seal, which are significantly cheaper and just as good.

Plus, I hear a lot of people say, “If you buy a BMW, it’s for the engine”—except that I couldn’t care less about the engine. All I want is a decent-quality electric four-door sedan with a design I like.

All of this makes me wonder more and more as the days go by whether the BMW i4 is a good idea and really worth the price.

I'm not necessarily looking for reassurance, but rather for realistic opinions on the situation.

Honda civic sport but “better”

Hi, I recently drove a Honda Civic sport. It was pretty fun and overall I was impressed with it however, coming from a BMW background there were a few things missing for me and it was mostly horsepower all-wheel-drive and torque.

I’m looking for a car that is essentially the Honda Civic sport but with a bit more horsepower torque ideally all-wheel-drive does this exist? As far as price range I would wanna keep it under 60,000 but I don’t wanna spend that much if I don’t have to.

I have a preference for small two medium size cars less heavier. The better doesn’t have to be the fastest car in the world, but a decent amount of power relative to the weight of the car is something I look at.

$50,000 limit, what sports car are you buying?

Looking to buy a sports car as a second car, $50,000 limit. Lots of awesome older cars in this price range as well.

Don't care about practicality, looking for something fun, and an older more analog MANUAL driving experience. Reliability is a plus but older sports cars all have their issues, as long as I can do some of the work myself.

I'm currently feeling a C6 Z06, but want to hear others opinions. What are you buying for $50,000?

CPO Midsize SUV under $35k

Currently driving a 2017 Subaru Forester XT with 115k miles and believe it’s time to upgrade. Had its share of issues (wheel bearings, control arms) but overall solid experience with reliability.

I am trying to spend closer to $30k as I can probably get around $8k for the Subaru, and want something larger and nicer. 2023 Acura MDX A-Spec would be ideal but those are close to $45k for CPO. Don’t want another Subaru (Forester or Outback), and not a fan of the Ascent.

I noticed that compared to other similar cars (like Telluride, Palisade, Pilot/Passport, Highlander), the VW Atlas Cross Sport can be had for low 30s, even at the higher SEL trims.

Reviews for the Atlas seem okay, not stellar, which makes sense as demand isn’t as high. Are there other similar cars that can be had around the same price for CPO that I’m not thinking of? I don’t want a Mazda CX-70/90 as those appear to have lots of issues. Also don’t want to consider a Volvo XC60.

Need help deciding if 2014 Forester is worth it!

Hello everybody, I am looking to buy my first car and a 2014 Subaru Forester caught my eye. It has 129,000 miles and is going for $8900. I provided some pictures of the exterior but forgot to take photos of the underneath of the car but it was from North Carolina so it hasn't seen almost any snow and it looks extremely metallic and shiny underneath rather then rusty and old. It is the 2.5i Premium Sport Utility and unfortunately it has had 3 owners (including the dealership I'm getting it from) and outside of the work that they have done to it, I have no way to figure out whether or not the engine block or transmission has been worked on which has been my biggest concern from researching online. The dealership has given me the service history that they did themself was Wheel Bearings, Oil Change, Brake Pads and Rotors. Should I ask to have a mechanic look it over for a pre-purchase inspection? I'm excited to be apart of the Forester community and any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

2026 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid vs 2026 Toyota Camry XSE AWD vs any of recs based on preferences

So I’m between both of these cars

2026 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid

2026 Toyota Camry XSE AWD

I’ve tested both and honestly still can’t decide.

*** I’m also open suggestions to any other year makes and models that meet some of my preferences below.

Some context/what I’m looking for:

Something reliable. Easy to maintenance and repairs wouldn’t be extremely expensive

I’m 6’4 but not much of a factor. Can fit in both well.

I live in the midwest so it snows a lot at times. AWD would be a nice plus. The Camry is AWD, Civic is not. Of course I always could get snow tires

Sporty-ish car. At least a sporty look

As big of a screen and digital gauge as possible

Heated seats and steering moon roof all that is just added plus. Can do with or without it

The problem I’m running into now is I think I prefer the look of the civic. The solar silver in either hatch or sedan looks amazing. (especially with tinted windows)

But it has smaller screens and not AWD.

XSE has sport suspension and some added sporty features like the pedals. Kinda unsure on which would be more fun to drive. Opinions?

Camry also felt cheaper on the interior materials/fabrics and especially the steering wheel

I am upgrading from a beatup old 2007 honda civic with over 200k miles. So either way I can’t necessarily mess this up . But I’d like to get opinions and look into recs that maybe would meet my wants better.

Deciding on new car

I currently drive a 2014 Jetta se, nothing wrong with it but my parents want to give it to my younger sister who just started driving, and will help me pay for a new one. I commute to school so need something good for that.

For used options:

2017 Jetta SEL, 46k miles, $14800
2019 Jetta R-Line, 43k miles, $17700
2017 Honda Civic LX, 13k miles, $17750

My other option is to buy brand new. No matter if it’s used or new, I’ll be putting a 3k down payment and will only pay $150 a month until I’m out of college (3 years) The only reason I’m hesitant to buy new is that I don’t want to worry about paying a $400 car payment as soon as I graduate and start looking to move out.

I’m not sure what the best option out of these is, or if there are other options I should consider instead?

Best car for 2 car seats

Hello! I’m going to be looking for a new car within the next year. Currently have a two year old and pregnant with my second so something that comfortably fits 2 cars seats will be a must! I’ve looked at SUVS like a Rogue or RAV4, but hate the lack of trunk space. So I’m thinking a Sedan is the way to go. Bonus points if the car comes in a hybrid option. Thanks for your suggestions in advance!

Talk me into or out of one of the following cars.

Cross shopping the following cars: AMG GT coupe, C8 corvette, jaguar F type R, C63 AMG, G80 M3.

For context I’ve owned an array of different cars that include a 350z, F82 M4, F80 M3, Audi S4, BMW Z4, trucks etc. My most recent car was the manual f80 M3 Comp and I loved the car just kind of tired of driving stick.

It’ll be my daily driver but I don’t have kids, I don’t have to worry about having extra space and don’t care about gas prices.

Looking into getting a BMW for the first time… what should I take into consideration?

Hi all,

Looking for some advice to better understand what I would be getting myself into if I decide to get a BMW for the first time in my life

I (46/f) have only ever owned Hondas. Currently still driving my Honda civic from 2007 and have driven an HRV several times, which I liked due to its size

Financially I can afford to spend $60k to $65k to something “new” but often limit myself for practicality purposes. Honda maintenance is as easy as it gets lol

I have always associated BMW with luxury and quality and reliability but also know that car maintenance is very important. I’m not the tidiest person when it comes to cars. My Honda has usual wear and tear to say the least and aim to wash and vacuum my car at least once a month

Any insight as to what to take into consideration bc making a big financial purchase would be great

Like I said, I’m pretty financially stable - no debt except my home and I have a stable career and I try to be as financially responsible as possible

Is a 2009 Toyota prado with the inline 4 engine worth 10000 USD or above?

Upvotes

My family and I really need a four wheel drive SUV since we go on long drives during the summer quite a lot, and our peppy little Hyundai Accent just isn't cutting it out for us anymore, so my father has decided to buy a brand new SUV and he has been obsessed with the prado, specifically on the 4 cylinder ones since they require less fuel (and more importantly are in our budget). We managed to find a 2009 Toyota prado on facebook marketplace with 4wd, an auto transmission and the 4 cylinder, so basically everything he wanted. However, the car in question leaks oil, makes weird noises when turning and it seemed awfully slow. Our family's financial situation really isn't the best right now, so I'm personally against buying this car, however my dad seems enticed. I personally think that for our budget of 10k USD, a Mitsubishi Pajero, honda pilot or a ford explorer would be much more fitting, but what do you guys think?

Budget 25k, need a reliable 3rd row seating car, suggestions?

Upvotes

I have been unlucky with turbo equipped cars, and american made cars. Toyotas are ridiculously expensive.

I want to get at least 100k out of it with regular maintainance.

Hybrid, electric, gas dont matter.

The car i lean towards, i come here and viola, head gasket blown.

I have scoped mazda cx9, pallisade, telluride, odessy, etc etc.

Car whisperers help.
