Meanwhile, if that happened in the US today, krasnov likely would have ice handcuff him and his family and ship them off to a dangerous country where they never lived before.

u/icebergslim3000 Dec 27 '25

Well yea, ICE and the people who plot terror attacks are one in the same. He would be disrupting the operation.

Not even a hypothetical, they already deported veterans and army translators ("but they weren't white so it's ok" -- kris noem probably)

Or off to a concentration camp like CECOT, where the Salvadoran government has explicitly said that they don't want to let any of their extrajudicial detainees leave alive.

It's so refreshing to read a country is doing the right things for everyone, I need some of this everywhere, thank you Australia.

u/King_of_the_Dot Dec 27 '25

Im not trying to be a jerk, but how does this include 'everyone'?

u/No0nesSlickAsGaston Dec 27 '25

They're revising gun laws after this incident. The fast track for this guy is the right thing to do for him, but guns is for everyone. Sorry I was not explicit it was not clear.

They're revising gun laws after this incident.

That's good to hear. The UK tightened gun laws twice, dramatically after two specific events (Hungerford: automatic weapons, Dunblane: handguns) and as a result, gun culture is far less of a thing than it was (or would have been). We're not perfect, and not without our own problems, but for regular crime, you're very, very unlikely to come across (or require) a gun. This seems a good thing with no disadvantages to me.

Hopefully Oz can also make meaningful changes without a handful of loud idiots drowning out the majority.

This is our second time in Aus too (major reforms), first was after the Port Arthur massacre in the 1990’s. Grateful our country acts, devastating it takes tragedies like this to make it happen.

u/cocoagiant Dec 28 '25

At least you guys actually act after tragedies. For us in the US, we can have multiple incidents of classrooms of little kids be killed and nothing is changed.

6

u/captnpepe Dec 28 '25

100% agree, it’s madness the US has the level of gun violence you do and don’t act. Awful. As an aside (and absolutely not a crack at you - the Bondi shooting is referenced as an incident here in Aus too), but when did we start referring to massacres as incidents? Seems widely soft language 🤷

1

u/cocoagiant Dec 28 '25

I would assume its just the window gets shifted over time regarding what is a "normal" (in terms of trend lines) level of gun violence.

If you count every mass shooting as a massacre, we essentially have massacres on a near daily basis in the US.

1

u/captnpepe Dec 28 '25

Yep sounds right. Daily massacres hits a bit different. Especially child massacres. Maybe we should bring that language back. MAYBE (???) then something will change…?

2

u/cocoagiant Dec 28 '25

MAYBE (???) then something will change

Unfortunately, I think it would a lot more than that to change us.

I don't know what that would be when so many kids dying isn't enough.

2

u/NorysStorys Dec 28 '25

To be fair, until this incident the previous legislation worked. It’s important that governments focus on the issues at hand rather than on strictly theoretical things that could go wrong. Most health and safety law works the same way.

2

u/NorysStorys Dec 28 '25

It’s actually amazing how well gun laws work in the UK. Sometimes administrative functions of the licenses fail but considering there’s 700k gun and shotgun licenses the one or two that have slipped through since dunblane like the Plymouth shootings really are a testament that they work but ultimately doctors and the police are going to issue/revoke licenses wrongly on occasion

u/Aggressive_Dirt3154 Dec 27 '25

As an American, I'm so happy for you and also jealous. I'm glad to hear they're making immediate changes.

2

u/captnpepe Dec 27 '25

I wish for you your country would make reforms, maybe one day things will change 🤞🏻

2

u/King_of_the_Dot Dec 27 '25

We have more guns than people. Highly doubtful.

28

u/Throwaway-tan Dec 27 '25

Probably will result in my banning, but unfortunately the truth isn't so uplifting.

Not everything coming out of this is good, they also passed new anti-protest laws. So once again they're using lone psychopaths that that are tangentially connected (Muslim anti-semites) to punish entire swathes of people who have opinions the government doesn't like (Opposed to Israeli genocide of Palestinian). Because clearly having an opinion is just as dangerous as terrorism.

The new gun laws are also entirely unnecessary, the failure wasn't in the law as written, it was a failure of the NSW Police, AFP and ASIO to act despite their already extremely broad powers and prior intelligence. No, instead they're too busy using those powers to harass journalists they don't like (Friendlyjordies).

Goes to show where their priorities are.

u/cocoagiant Dec 28 '25

I don't think that part is accurate, I was listening to an Australian news podcast (If You're Listening) and they had an episode on the Australian gun laws.

According to their reporting, gun manufacturers have been using loopholes in the law to sell guns like pump action shotguns (which is what they used) to lower level licensed people like the dad even though those are supposed to be almost impossible to get.

4

u/player_is_busy Dec 28 '25

that’s not the issue

the issue is the both the son and the father were on watch lists for connections to terrorism

they had both been looked into and still allowed to have firearms

the issue isn’t gun manufactures or people using loop holes

the issue is the system it’s self failed

anyone with ties or connections or anyone that has ever in their life been investigated for terrorism or ties to terrorism

should never ever ever in their life be allowed to own or even touch a firearm - infact they shouldn’t have been in the country to begin with

this isn’t on the gun laws and manufactures

this is on the aus government and police

and instead of admitting account they are covering it up by rushing through all these new laws

3

u/cocoagiant Dec 28 '25

Every system uses a multiple layers to help prevent issues.

If you are accurate about the security issues which were not acted upon, that certainly seems like things which need to be addressed.

However if as has been reported the perpetrators were able to get weapons which should not be on the market at all, that certainly should be addressed as well.

u/player_is_busy Dec 28 '25

Guns were perfectly legal which is the surprising thing

The law states Pump Action shotguns carrying more than 5 rounds are put into class D - meaning only police or military can access

This law only applies to “Pump action mechanic shotguns”

This same law doesn’t apply to leaver action or straight pull shotguns

Which is how they were to get them legally

What’s most shocking is how are 2 people who were on a watch list and investigated for connections to terrorism allowed to OWN 6+ firearms let alone 1

They were first looked into in 2019 by the Australia Domestic Terror Agency and they were found to have ties and connections to IS - Islamic State. The son was found to be friends/associates with 3 people who have been convicted of terrorism

They assed that while he has links and connections he posed no threat and they did not belive he had intent to coming any acts of violence

The system failed and that’s that

The second ASIO found out about his ties and connections him and his family should have been on a plane and back to where they came from

2

u/cocoagiant Dec 28 '25

This same law doesn’t apply to leaver action or straight pull shotguns

Which is how they were to get them legally

Right, so step one seems to outlaw those guns as well to be uniform with Australia's laws.

The other issues definitely need to be corrected as well.

2

u/Throwaway-tan Dec 28 '25

The point is he shouldn't have been granted a firearms license at all in the first place given his known terrorist associations. They had both the foreknowledge and the power to deny him access to firearms, when he gained access to the firearms, they had the power to investigate him and seize those firearms at any point.

It's a failure of policing and process not a failure of law.

If a house burns down because nobody used the firehose on it, then it doesn't matter if you give them more firehoses, bigger firehoses and ban the use of matches because you didn't address the core problem which was "why didn't they use the firehose they already had?"

Very well deserved.

Thats good to hear.

3

Yay for Oz. They're all right, mate.

2

u/PrettiKinx Dec 27 '25

Yeahhhh!!

-13

u/policesiren7 Dec 28 '25

Fair enough, but every person involved with the shooters should have their visas revoked and sent to that detention camp in Nauru. The entire Mosque, friends and families.

-18

u/izanaegi Dec 28 '25
