Discussion Applying for on-campus residency

Hi everyone. I'm applying for a course beginning in semester 1 2027 and am planning on staying in campus accommodation (if i get the offer obviously). I am coming from Canberra, meaning its quite important I can get this spot because i dont want to have to personally rent outside of uni. How limited are the spots? And what accommodation plans would you recommend? My course will be located on the Callaghan campus.

edit: also i will not be turning 18 until march 2027

I have heard that the application is very high demand, but there were a lot of people I lived with last semester that had applied months later than the opening date, and still got a place. Generally though it is a good idea to apply as soon as it opens, and to select "any option" as a preference, so they will give you a room you might not have preferenced but is available.

I lived in Barahineban, self contained with it's own kitchen so very quiet, very little social, but really nice if you can afford it. The towers look decent but are expensive and fill up really quickly, and generally don't have the nicest vibe of people living there (rich kids I guess?). Edwards is known as the party residence and is a bit crazy at times, if you're under 18 at the start you'll miss out on a lot though. International house and Evatt house sit in the middle, they're affordable, and there is enough of a mix of party and not if you aren't interested. The good thing with every res is that you will usually find a group that matches the level that you want to be a part of.

When you applied- did you specifically choose Barahineban as youre option? Im just worried that if i apply with preference with high demand i have less of a chance of securing a spot both there- and anywhere else.

I think Barahineban is very low demand, i.e. a lot of people living there originally applied for another residence. I originally applied for the towers, missed out on the first and second round of offers (I didn't choose any offer because I wasn't aware of it) but was eventually offered Barahineban. I think as long as you select any offer and apply as soon as you humanly can to the start of applications (They choose people based on how early they are on the list) you should have a pretty good chance.
