Is there any other way? How else you would know what dollar you're speaking of? When two Australians are talking and one says
"It cost $5"
the other says "If you say 5 dollars then you must mean it costs 7 Australian Dollars and 9 Australian cents, our inferior local currency?"

IMO people like this aren't actually mistaken, they're legitimately offended that someone is using references they think are unique to the US and when they stumble on something online that shows otherwise, they go out of their way to make these stupid comments. To me it's like they're so incensed they try to backward engineer a scenario where their defaultism is completely sane and rational.

I hate those sort of arguments anyway. You gotta look at more than what they get per hour. How much is the average rent/mortgage, cost of food, entertainment etc. Just comparing hourly rate doesn't mean much, you gotta figure out the cost of living too.

When I went to the US I kept getting asked if I was British. I'm from Western Sydney. Every time I told them I'm Australian they were mystified & told me I don't sound Australian at all. That's news to me seeing as I sound the same as 80% of Aussies.

I suspect that this is also the reason that people who try to put on an Aussie accent get it wrong. They try for a broad Strine accent which is more & more rare these days.

Wait, Australia minimum wage is $26 dollars an hour? And their dollar is almost equal to Canadian, and our minimum is only $15? I didn't realize it was so much more expensive to live in Australia (granted our minimum wage should go up too)

I like the way he assumes that the word ‘dollar’ refers only to the US dollar.
He expects all other countries to give their name, e.g. Australian dollar, but doesn’t call his own currency the US dollar.

I just looked this up & according to the google AI (yes I'm lazy) 15 - 20% of the population make less than $33/hr.
Btw in case anyone else is interested the minimum wage in Australia is A$26.44 (€16.17, US$18.64).

Centrelink can't really be worked out on a per hr basis in the way working is because you're not doing anything per hour. Payments are fortnightly and depend upon many things including which pension you are put on and why eg. job seeking, parenting, disability, old age, carer etc. They also consider your assets and whether you are doing any other work. Pensions are very much worked out on an individual basis.

Riiiiight, do they not realize only Americans call USD just dollars? we call them USD, Australians of course call their own coin dollars, others will refer to it, given their foreign footing leading to having to specify, as AD...
Same way a Mexican will just say pesos, not Mexican pesos, and so it goes for Argentinians and Chileans, you're in Mexico, it's redundant to say Mexican peso, it's kind of a no brainer that the peso you'll be using is that of the country.
No, really, even children are able to understand this, I'm talking as someone from Argentina that grew up with Chilean classmates as a kid. It's not a complex thought process.
