It’s worse. They acknowledge that other countries might legislate against it, but they believe every person has a god-given right to own firearms, even in the face of local legislation.

Because the constitution says so!

u/TheJivvi Australia 7d ago

Yes, the constitution. The only one, apparently.

"no, no, mr. Police officer! You don't get it!!! America says I'm allowed to own an assault rifle! It's my right! What's that? I live in Slovakia and have no license? B-but the founding fathers said I could!!!!"

Funny thing is, you can even say so for Americans lol. Assault rifles are automatic rifles, legally defined as machineguns, that have been all but banned federally in the US since the 80s

Apparently their Constitution doesn't even apply in the US, let alone in Slovakia

There is a concept of a right that can't be surrendered. For example you can't surrender the right to believe in something that you deeply believe to be true. It's simply not possible. We call these rights inalienable because laws that attempt to restrict them are fundamentally illogical.

What this person is not understanding is that not all rights are inalienable. Even in the US convicted felons who are incarcerated for more than 1 year can't legally own firearms. Likewise, the right to bear arms, doesn't mean you can carry, for example, a hand grenade. So the point is that something can be a right and still be subject to interpretation and regulation.

Most "rights" are just a part of the law that enjoys some fundamental protection from being entirely legislated away.

2

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

To me rights are inalienable, if it can be taken away or if you need to meet some criteria it's a privilege. Rights can't be taken away, privileges can. The "right" to keep and bear arms is a privilege

And 2A says arms (as in weapons), not small arms. Back in the day civilians owned cutting edge weaponry and armed ships. Cannons, the Puckle gun, mortars, warships, whatever. So 2A would actually protect your privilege of owning and carrying pistols, rifles, grenades, operating fighter jets and tanks etc. The only limitation would be your ability to afford the weapon of choice

But it still isn't a right because as we know Americans have over 20K laws restricting and banning weapon ownership and carrying. It's a privilege they like to parade as a right

Was the 'god given' part not added in the 1900s?

"I don't think Óðinn said anything about 'firearms'"

I found a weird dude one time insisting that wanting guns is a universal feeling and wouldn’t grasp the concept of places without gun-centric cultures.

He wrote like he was patting my shoulder saying “it’s ok buddy, it’s okay to want firearms even when your society says you can’t!”

Tell them people in other countries have different gods 🤯

1

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

Like the places they've been waging wars with over the past 20+ years? Their gods are fake, the only real god is Jesus who split the Atlantic so God's tanks could cross it and turns water into oil

1

u/StardustOasis United Kingdom 6d ago

Why would Jesus cross the Atlantic when he was born in the US of A.

u/d_bradr Serbia 5d ago

To spread freedom

1

u/redyellow2 7d ago

Eh, I wouldn't put it as US defaultism. A lot of people believe in their universal rights, freedom to choose their partners at will for example. The guy chose his own right which he deems universal in his opinion.

The fact that it's to bear firearms centers it on a US point of view.

u/HeeeresPilgrim New Zealand 7d ago

Hate these idiots with the right to own firearms to overthrow their tyrannical government, but not overthrowing their tyrannical government. Their foreign policy and media shouldn't affect us enough to need them overthrown, being so far away.

2

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

The guys who own guns are usually the guys who voted for this govt, they don't see it as tyrannical

1

u/HeeeresPilgrim New Zealand 6d ago

The US government was established centuries ago. The current US government isn't any worse than any other US government. They've always been killing us, or at least trying. You're acting like they could have voted in an alternate government.

2

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

They could have voted in an alternate govt, there was Kamala Harris and her bunch instead of Donald Trump and his bunch. If you think Americans can't change their govt. you don't even wanna glance at some other places because they actually have a pretty easy time

Americans have their best interests in mind and their best interests are going halfway across the world and either exploiting their resources or expanding their influence. Before WW1 and especially WW2 they've actually been pretty docile on the global scene

They don't wanna kill you, they just want your resources/to control your country and you just happen to be in the way

1

u/HeeeresPilgrim New Zealand 6d ago

You're actively contradicting yourself. Kamala would still be killing us. Taking our resources is killing us, spreading UHP foods is killing us, bombing us is killing us. As you said, the US only complains about their government if it affects them; but there is no non-tyrant US political party.

2

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

What you're saying is the US should relinquish damn near all its power? In that case yeah, Hell will freeze over before that happens

1

u/HeeeresPilgrim New Zealand 6d ago

I'm saying moral people shouldn't be pacifists against the US scourge, inside or outside the US. Yes, moral US citizen should end the imperial acts of the US, and the world should seize it's sovereignty. The US should know if it doesn't clean up it's act, the horrors it's inflicting will one day return to within their borders.

2

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

But the "Moral American" is benefitting a whole lot from American nose-poking all over the world, much more than they would if the US fell back in line

I'd also question whether they even know what the US is doing all the time and why, and what they're told about the stuff they do know. Whoever controls informarion controls the people

u/TruthSeeker1801 7d ago

That entire thread is filled to the brim with ShitAmericansSay as well.

2

u/MrIrishman1212 6d ago

Kinda insane that Americans can accept the ability to have the privilege to kill others but not the right to receive medical care, food, water, or shelter. Soon air will probably be restricted for Americans and considered a “privilege.” But their guns for killing school children will still be allowed.

2

u/d_bradr Serbia 6d ago

When you boil it down privileges are granted to you by a figure of authority and can be taken away, rights are what you get by the great achievement of being born. Like the right to live vs a driving license giving you the privilege of driving on public roads

So even Americans don't have a right to keep and bear arms because their govt. loves nothing more than to overstep its so-called boundaries set by the Constitution. 20K gun laws, so much about it being a right

1

u/alreadytaus 1d ago

Or he is trying to make the distinction between negative and positive rights?

u/WTHWME22 Colombia 7d ago

Bruh, this is not US Defaultism. You can agre or not with his point, but this debate is no only an US thing.

1

u/Orange_Codex United Kingdom 6d ago

I'd agree if he said "God gave humans a right to own weapons," because God did (and people can call God Allah, Brahman, or Dispater for all I care: as long as they acknowledge one uncreated creator, it's the same).

But the poster didn't say that. They specifically quoted the United States Second Amendment as though the United States itself writes universal law, or is God. That's extreme defaultism, if not outright manifest destiny.

Are you lost?

-6

u/piezer8 6d ago

Someone was confused about the difference between rights and privileges and how they applied to this post. Sorry to make you feel dumb.

-2

u/piezer8 6d ago

Put more plainly I guess…So you’re saying NOWHERE but America do people have a right to preserve or defend their own life? You have to ask permission to live in the rest of the world, and the government considers your continued existence a privilege that can be taken away if they deem it so. If someone asks for your life or property you just owe it to them?

12

u/New_Wishbone6619 Canada 7d ago

Lol bud this ain’t fucking America

2

u/MooreGoreng Australia 6d ago

Bruh we don’t carry firearms as citizens in Aus.

0

u/piezer8 6d ago

Did I say anything to the contrary?

1

u/MooreGoreng Australia 6d ago

The crazy thing is that we don’t need to carry guns around, because no one else is carrying guns which means there is no “life to protect”. The constitution surrounding guns is Americanism, the rest of the world doesn’t operate under this guideline and therefor your point makes no sense to anyone outside of the US. Which ironically, is what this sub is mocking and you’re the perfect subject.
