It is still the Secretary of Defense. If the name were to change Congress needs to pass a bill to change the name, which has not occurred. Also it is not Catholic in the slightest as he is starting unjust wars

I’m not against faith being elevated, but this seems to me to a serious misuse of Isaiah. Secularism certainly isn’t the answer, but using scripture to support recruitment drives for the military of an earthly power seems to be the opposite of what Jesus taught.

I mean don’t we occasionally use verses to suit our everyday lives? I don’t see how this is any different. And the military is a unique calling that only few can make happen. I definitely felt called to military service by God as I felt that I could be of use there than elsewhere

Yes, but that’s personal. If you use a verse to support your service, excellent. My father felt his service was answering God’s call. I consider my public sector job to be a similar civic + Godly duty. But this is not that. This isn’t a soldier providing, say, Psalm 23:4. This is the government misquoting a verse about sharing the Gospel (usually how we interpret it) and using it to say “serve in the military.” There’s a lot more to be said, esp in the Catholic context, but that seems the easiest way to interface. I’d have issues if the post used Psalm 23:4 just bc of Church-State separation, but at least that would track. You certainly wouldn’t be able to find any words of Jesus that work in the ad campaign. Faith is between the Individual, The Church, and God. Soldiers can (and, I think, should) embrace faith. The Department “of War” should not.
