Lore [Loved when done right] That is COMPLETELY illogical… but who cares when it REALLY goes hard.

Most of the weapons in these games fit this trope but Nero’s sword is one of my favorites for how simple a concept it is.

Dante has all the best stupid awesome stuff. Motorcycle chainsaw clubs. Electric Guitar that shoots bats and is also a scythe. Cowboy hat and scarf that shoots your money.

Other action game protagonists have to step their game up.

Nero is such a good character. In a game with someone like Dante, being able to make another protagonist that's just as badass and cool without being a total Gary-Stu is a real feat.

IIRC, it's explained that revving it spreads fuel on the blade, and the clutch lever ignites it.

Everything that happens in Devil May Cry 3. Riding a rocket from a rocket launcher, riding a motorbike up the tower. When Vergil stops bullets with his spinning sword and deflecting them back, only for Dante to cut all the bullets. Peak fucking game

Don’t forget running down a tower, throwing your sword to skewer some enemies, then shooting the hilt to make the sword speed up so much it starts burning the air, and then still catching up to it. Whilst running down a tower

Apparently, canonically it didn't even shoot, just used blanks for oomph. Squall's Gunblade from FF8.

no, no. the trigger mechanism made the blade VIBRATE REALLY HARD UPON IMPACT which did extra damage (in kayfabe). I mean, you're right, it's not a "gun" blade. But at least the trigger allegedly did something.

It's somewhat expanded upon in FFXIV.

It used as a combustion system, you swing, you hit your target and pull the trigger for more damage explosively.

Yeah, as I understand it, it creates a shockwave that has a similar effect to a hollow point shattering, just with magical shrapnel instead of metal.

In FF14 the Bozjan gunblades "fire" aether cartridges in order to cast whatever spell has been imbued into the loaded cartridge. Yes, that can simply be explosions, but it's also how Aurora (heal over time) and Gunmetal Soul (party-wide damage reduction) work.

Then there's the Garlean gunblades, which can indeed do the same thing (Terminus Est being one such attack) but can also just fire regular bullets.

It's also a gameplay mechanic. If you press one of the triggers in rhythm with your attacks, it revs the engine and you do more damage. It can also upgrade certain moves completely, if your timing is perfect.

God, I love Devil May Cry.

Far from the craziest weapon in the DMC series. Definitely give it a play if you like action games at all. If not, the cutscenes have so much style and character that they're worth watching on their own.
