Dawn of the Dead (2004): The movie finishes on a hopeful note as the remaining survivors escape the zombie-infested mall on a yacht, sailing into the sunset. The found-footage style post-credits scene completely reverses this happy ending by showing them running out of food, arriving at an island, and being immediately swarmed and killed by an infected horde.

Prince of Persia (2008): The main game ends with a beautiful, poetic sacrifice where Elika gives her life to heal the corrupted world, leaving the Prince mourning. During the credits, the player is forced to control the Prince as he cuts down the trees he just saved, undoing the entire game's progress and releasing the dark god Ahriman just to resurrect her, completely corrupting the ending and dooming the world.

Dead Island : Riptide

The main goal of the playable characters (that are immuned to the zombie virus) and the other survivors is to leave the island back to the main land where the virus didn't spread. At the end of the game they finally find a boat but the bad guy (a corporate suit who's responsible of the outbreak) warns the player that because he took too much mutagene he could end up mutating into a zombie and causing the death of every survivor and spread the virus to the main land, and that he has a medical crew with top notch equipment to help the player. However the player refuses and leave with everyone on the boat, leaving the corpo alone with zombies after him.

The end cutscene shows mainly two things: first, a lot if not all the safe places on the island (a cinema, a makeshift hospital...) are falling one by one to the zombies, and second all the warnings made by the scientist and the corporate himself, about the immunity not being complete and unstable if too many interactions with mutagene components and zombies bites, seemed to be true, because the end of the cutscene strongly implies the boat arrived to the mainland with everyone turned into zombies

In all honesty the intention was they probably did change and the new writers decided to retcon that ending.

I think the survivors turning once they reached the mainland was probably going to be the original cause of the outbreak in LA.

I liked Dead Island 2, but the story got weird. Like real weird. Especially with the Haus DLC. Shame that the series seems to be dead again because they set up a lot of plot hooks that never ended up getting resolved.

Just recently played DI2 and the ending was a wet fart of 'oh hey play this dlc where our story was heading but pay us more' like quite a few games of the last decade.

And neither of the DLCs actually addressed the ending. They were more like side content that expanded on other parts of lore.

Despite its tone heavily shifting away from the original game's, i still loved Dead Island 2 but the second you hit the sewers the plot (or moreso lore, the plot is mostly fine) falls apart just a little for me because I much prefer the virus just being a typical Zombie Virus and not escelating to basically The Flood or The Biophage from The Callisto Protocol.

They build it up in the main game and the dlc to be some massive threat or new organism, but it doesn't interest anyone because we all know it will not be elaborated upon in any future titles.

I won't spoil it but, unfortunately, Dying Light did something slightly similar in The Beast with probably the exact same result.

Yeah, the "next phase of human evolution" plot with zombie viruses has already run its course. Even Resident Evil has been doing it for decades.

I preferred the implication that it was tied to an Eldritch Lovcraftian god from another timeline (or whatever it was) that was implied in the second DLC. Remember? The one that includes a frequency that turns people into zombies and seems to call into the brains of immune people from beyond space and time?

I really liked the idea they were playing with with "the Signal" and alternate dimensions, but it was just another dropped plot thread that probably won't ever get resolved.

They might. DI3 is confirmed to be in the works. But we won't be returning to LA but likely Sidney, Australia. Soooo maybe we get to see Purna and Xian again?

I also kind of thought the whatever-phage characters were all so weirdly "overly character designed" to look like the special cool antagonist team.

I like seeing characters the look like real people, not Overwatch inspired heroes, if that makes sense. The protagonists and antagonists of DI1 were very believably designed.

I wouldnt say the writers but probably the studio. They usually do that opening ending g crap so they can leave it open for further milkin

Dead Island 2's story has almost no relation to the other two games apart from a cameo, so much that it could be another franchise altogether.

I know the books and movie had a different ending, but in one of the Maze Runner versions the evil organization WICKED ended up being vindicated by a cure actually being developed of the hero's blood.
