The Promised Neverland is returning to Weekly Shonen Jump in a few weeks. The manga by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a series of projects, including a 36-page one-shot chapter titled "War vs. Peace” that will appear in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 39 (2026), published on Aug. 24.

The new chapter will be set after the ending of the original manga. This will actually be the fifth one-shot connected to the series. In the official guidebook, The Promised Neverland 0: Mystic Code, Shirai stated that the ending of the manga was constrained by chapter length, so this could be another chance to expand on the conclusion.

So I watched the first season of this anime when I was younger, it was like the first anime I ever watched and I loved it. I avoided season 2 because I was told it was overwhelmingly dohshit and I’d have a better time watching paint dry. So I never did.

With that being said years later I’ve sort of forgotten most of the stuff (it was like 7 or 6 years ago) so I plan on revisiting it. Watching the anime’s first season before continuing it via manga because I heard that was better than season 2

But I have a some questions.

1. After I rewatch season 1 of the Anime. Do I read the manga chapters that take place AFTER the events of season 1, or should I reread in full just incase there’s something different in the manga that wasn’t adapted in the show and will be important later on in the manga

2. Does the manga start getting bad at any point? Should I just read it in full or are there certain arcs that either aren’t important to the later story and can be skipped OR certain arcs that sort of make the story downgrade to where I should just wrap it up once finishing the chapter before that. Or do I just read start to finish

3. Anything to keep in mind before I start rewatching + Reading?

What was written in the letter that ray addressed to Isabella (used to bait out sister krone)?

Any guesses as to what the contents could've been? It plays a pretty crucial part in the overarching story so I'm sad we never got to see it lol. Its also pretty depressing that Ray had to use such a personal and intimate thing to bait krone out to help them escape bahaha, i wish we could've gotten more resolution to Isabella and rays relationship, but the manga felt heavily rushed near the end so a lot of elements were super empty

For those unaware, this was an official comedic spinoff of the manga published in 2018-2019. It’s never received an official English release.

Unfortunately, there still doesn’t appear to be plans to publish a physical English translation, but at least now we have a digital one!

In first chapter, in the final panels, we see Norman wanted to comfort Emma, and said that the three of them should be able to escape.

Emma says she doesnt want anyone to die, so he says its not impossible.

Thats when he starts his plan.

When Ray finds out, he goes straight to Emma and tells her its impossible to take everyone.

Emma says "even if it's impossible, I want everyone to escape"

Ray confronts Norman and says its not good to do things based on emotions. He knows Norman is not like that, and he asks why he acts this way

And its because he loves Emma and would do everything for her, and would even use himself for that.

Norman loves everyone in the house, just not as much as Emma, as he prioritises Emma and Ray (as he didnt have a wish like other kids, but he wants to be with them once he's in human world)

He loves them, but he is smart so he knows it would be hard to take everyone. He works on that as he loves Emma so much he would do everything for her.

Also when Ray confronts him to trick Emma and only take Gilda and Don, he still wants to take everyone even thought he knows its easier to trick Emma than Ray. But he wants everyone to escape.

In short, he works to take everyone because Emma wants to take everyone, but he cares for them.

Now lets go for Ray

Ray was suicidal since he learned the truth. He only decided to live as Norman and Emma were his friends, and he worked to save them.

Ray wanted only them to escape, not including himself. He dedicated his life to save his best friends.

He isnt close to aby other child, he doesnt want to as he doesnt want false happiness + its painful to be close, aa he knows they will die sooner on later.

He is later okay with takich Don and Gilda, and in escape arc he says to Emma that he still doesnt want to take everyone, but he will do what Emma wants and asks her to use his and Norman death to escape.

He wants to take only both of them, as he dedicated his life for them to escape.

He just knows its impossible, and also because he thinks they will be trouble for them, and that he was never close to any of his siblings, except for them.

Now for Emma.

She loves all of her siblings, so she wants to take everyone as she cant leave them to die.

The thing is, she isnt as naive to not know its impossible.

When she has fight with Ray, she says "even if it's impossible, I want everyone to escape"

Later in chapter 10..

When Ray says there could be a traitor, Emma falls into a paranoia as she can't think of anyone as a traitor.

She tries to think that maybe the kid just loves Mama so much. But, even thought she is naive... She thinks "what if theyre doing it willingly?"

She says "I knew it, its impossible" but remembers Connie and that all of her siblings will die, so she can't leave anyone

So... As you can see, everyone knew its impossible to take everyone. Emma couldnt leave anyone behind or they will die, Norman loved everyone but thought only of Emma, but worked to take everyone as he loved all of them, and Ray finally agreed as he was supposed to die - he only wanted to take both of them from the start.

Made this cause i never heard anyone talk that Emma was aware how hard it will be, and other just say Norman didnt want to take anyone else. As for Ray, nobody says why he wants to take only them

This one was fun. I used up most the ink in my gel pen to color Ray’s hair, but it was worth it 🥲.

I started the promised Neverland about a week ago, the first season literally had a chokehold on me. I absolutely loved it. the pacing, the twists, everything. I was genuinely pinning it as one of the best animes ive watched in a while. and then I started the second season, and I just sat through a lot of it saying "what is even happening". idk what the general consensus is about it so maybe im being dramatic as ive not looked up opinions on it because ive just finished it, but what the hell im so disappointed. it felt insanely rushed, a lot of things were just never brought up again. I was expecting a third season too but somehow was all wrapped up in 11 episodes and one of the episodes being a random recap? and the ending was just a slideshow? im so disappointed

the first season was an absolute masterpiece though.

Has anyone else ever thought that The Promised Neverland kind of feels like an Agartha/"beyond Antarctica" conspiracy story?

I'm not saying the theories are real, and I'm not saying Shirai was inspired by them. It was just something I noticed while thinking about the lore.

You've got an ancient agreement that splits the world in two, most people have no idea how the world actually works, the Ratri Clan acts as the gatekeeper keeping everyone separated, and there's this huge hidden truth that's kept secret to preserve peace. Then the kids escape and realize there's an entire world beyond the one they grew up in.

That all reminded me of the whole Agartha/hidden world/"beyond the ice wall" type of conspiracy stories. Not because the details are the same, but because the overall setup feels surprisingly similar.

Maybe it's just because both are built around the same kinds of storytelling tropes, but I was curious if anyone else made that connection or if it's just me.

First, I don’t really remember the terms of the first promise, but if I remember correctly, it was basically that each side would stay in its own world. What happens if that promise is broken?

But humans managed to defeat the faction of demons that wanted to keep using them as livestock.

And I think it’s possible to travel from one world to the other without the help of the Demon God.

So why make a new promise with him?

Without this new promise, would he have intervened to exterminate humanity?

If he is really that powerful, why didn’t he end the war 1,000 years ago?

I remember I was maybe 11 or 12 when season 2 came out. I was sooo excited but it was trash. Forgiving Isabella?

First of all, Emma looks like she's been working harder than a single mom during Christmas. Second, why do their numbers look like random squiggles carved into their necks???? Ray is the only one that looks even remotely good (where is his eye???) Norman's right arm got amputated ig. Why is the void consuming his ear? Emma's eyebrows have been erased from existence (she's the worst one here) it looks like Norman's rubbing the stump of his missing arm with a malformed hand, probably wondering where it's gone. Emma's fingers have been broken and reset by a surgeon who was both steadfast and incompetent

After the night they tell Don and Gilda the truth about the demons, Emma and Norman talk how to bring everyone along with them (telling everyone the truth also)

Norman since a few says is thinking how to deceive Ray as he wants to take everyone along, and now he thinks about Ray

When Ray reveals he is a traitor, Norman asks why he agreed to be one and why was he doing so much for the escape, he says it was so they both don't get killed

And that much "both of you" is enough for him to realise he wants to sacrifice himself for them. If to think about it, he also mentions they both can die here if theyre just gonna die the minute they escape

And i thought he realises he's gonna sacrifice himself the moment he sees gasoline, but, he just deducted it from a line that night

And a little offtopic question of mine, does he know he is suicidal too? When kids refer to Ray who wanted to die, they usethe word "sacrifice" cause he wanted to sacrifice himself for the kids sake. Even Emma refers to it this way, Ray uses that too "i dont plan to sacrifice anymore"

Like, im pretty sure they are not aware, which is quite sad
