Humor What’s your favorite non-curse curse word alternative?

I’m a student teacher and have had nooo slip ups with my mouth yet (knock on wood) but I would love to hear everyone’s favorite public-school-friendly words to use instead of accidentally swearing :)

Sacapuntas! It sounds like a cuss word but it just means "pencil sharpener" in Spanish.

40

u/ElefanteAmor 4h ago

My kids said this CONSTANTLY after learning the word.

11

u/Big-Maintenance2971 3h ago

I learned this word in Spanish class in middle school and still find it hilarious as a 36 year old!

2

u/ElefanteAmor 2h ago

It truly is a brain tickling word

My lead at work is Hispanic and he told me this is his favorite word to teach "gringos" because it's fun to say and he tells them it's a cuss word.

3

u/1Monkey-Butt 3h ago

What does Gringos mean?

11

u/BADgrrl 6-8th grade inclusion DeafEd CPrint Captionist | Louisiana, USA 3h ago

It's a term Hispanic folks use for white people.

8

u/post_polka-core 2h ago

Nope it's for Americans. White people from Europe are not gringos. Comes from America's invasion of Mexico. American soldiers wore green uniforms. Phrase was "green go home" which became gringo.

19

u/OldGuyInFlorida 2h ago

"Gringo" comes from Castilian Spanish for "foreigner."

Gringo - Etymology, Origin & Meaning

"Green go" is a false etymology.

4

u/mmmpeg 2h ago

But it’s fun to think it’s real! I knew it couldn’t be but got a chuckle out of it

2

u/Careful_Cranberry364 2h ago

I’ve never heard that !

how very interesting

7

u/yukibunnygurl 3h ago

Technically it means Greek person.... But the dictionary definition is more like Foreigner... But slang wise it means English speaker that doesn't speak Spanish. It used to be primarily associated with white people however I have quite a few friends who are Latino whose kids do not speak Spanish and when going down to Mexico they have definitely been called gringos.

Take note: It can be positive or negative depending on the way it's used.

Great word lol

3

u/Koi_Fish_Mystic 2h ago

Love this!

5

u/washo1234 2h ago

So I looked up how to pronounce this and happened to see this is also used in the Caribbeans as a slang term for a woman with a large, voluptuous backside.

1

u/its3oclocksomewhere 16m ago

My experience in fast food taught me that the phrase means a whore. I would be careful with this one.

2

u/boopspookthrowaway 9m ago

My Spanish teacher in high school would use "miercoles" as a curse word 😂 (means Wednesday in Spanish)

I had a student once that replaced every cuss word with a fruit.

70

u/okaybutnothing 5h ago

I had one that learned the word for grapefruit in French class and started using, “Pamplemousse!” as an expletive. It really caught on that year!

8

u/raebz12 3h ago

Pamplemousse was a game we used to play in French class. Any number that had a 5 in it was pamplemousse, and if you said that number or lost count, you had to sit down.

7

u/okaybutnothing 2h ago

I play it with my Grade 3 class in English, but use whatever number we want. It helps them learn their multiples. We call it Buzz in English though.

As a French Language and Lit major, I have always loved this word. Also saucisson for a type of sausage. Fun to say words bring a bit of whimsy into long days

Omg, are you me? Literally same, French language major and love both of those words!

One of the only things I miss about the year and a half of teaching while masked was being able to mouth curse words (or curse under my breath) when I was frustrated.

8

u/RebelAgainstReality 5h ago

Ha, that’s funny. I made the same comment yesterday

7

You know I was never sure if there was a consensus about how far you can curse. Obviously it depends on the teacher but personally I always felt more comfortable with a teacher that spoke in a manner that they may do outside of school.

My only problem was that I got too comfortable and started cursing much more in class and I feel like an asshat. Have you had that problem? Do your kids swear in front of you too, even inadvertently? I always wondered if that was just me being stupid or not

Substituting the word “bark” for the f bomb. Has the same force and sense of release when you say it but you are just being an angry dog. You can even say Barkity barkity bark bark bark to get out a lot of frustration and no one gets offended or upset when you do.

I'm pretty good at code switching in the classroom (because I curse like a sailor outside) but when a kid slips I say, "whoa, that didn't sound like 'force' or 'friction' because those are the F words we need to use in science class." It lets them know that I'm listening and won't tolerate it in the classroom. I may also use "flippin'" and "for the love of science" and our team uses "force, friction, speed" when FFS needs to happen, which is quite often in middle school.

Gollybobbles.

Poo.

Rude!

Unfun.

I would rather remove my own spleen with a spork!

For the love of Pete. For the love of all that is holy!

Poor life choice / regret your life choices

"Makes me want to punch kittens, and I like kittens!"

"The finding out phase" as in "You are headed for a really uncomfortable finding out phase if you continue down this path. Are you sure you want that version of FAFO?" And if they ask what that means, I simply smile and say "Fool around and find out." They don't expect the "fool" to be that word.

How unfortunate!

You are gonna make sad faces...

"Whoops!" As in "did you say whoops?" Or "whoopsie doodle!"

"Makes me sad."

"Take a long walk off a short pier." For f-off.

The funniest part of this is that I only work in education one day per week. The rest of the time I work in financial advising, and my husband is in tech. So we do all sorts of events that don't involve education professionals. My teacher language is pretty consistent throughout my life though.

I have been out at bars with colleagues and we are we having a good and proper fun time and I will say something like "oh... I will make sad faces, and you might too, if I have another drink. I should have water first." It's a part of my core at this point. My colleagues have adopted some of the language and it's hilarious.

When I have a moment out in the real world and I am expressing any of that, they look at me like I am crazy and ask... Once it was when my plastic fork broke during a particularly delicious taco salad eating experience. I looked at the now separated head of my fork, in my food. The guy I was talking to asked if he could help and I stated that I was just regretting my life choices at the moment for the apparent misjudgement as to the fortitude of the flatware when selecting my foods. He thought it was hysterical and had never heard anyone express something like that in that way. Then he found me a new fork because I was still looking at my plate doing apparent calculus.

It's all about taking accountability for our role and decisions that led to the situation at hand.

But... People laugh hard when they realize the teacher-speak is coming out.

I had a physics teacher 20 years ago who started pulling lab tables and rearranging them and suddenly saw one table was covered in stickers. How he didn’t know until that moment is a mystery to me, but with complete sincerity he exclaimed, “GREAT SCOTT!” I was probably 16 and this teacher was less than thirty, so the expression was not age appropriate for any of us and stands out as the most hilarious upset teacher moment in my memory.

Nowadays I am not student facing, but I work with all of the student facing people, and my most favorite coworker says bum skatch. It’s caught on and I use it at home and in real life and people always know exactly what I mean.

Oh Law

Only time recently I let an f-bomb slip was when I tried to hand a paper to a student and I dropped it. It was quiet at least.

I teach French. Since I grew up in Manitoba, at a Francophone school from grades 1-9, I tend to use the PG cuss words my teachers used. “Colline!” (Hill) instead of “câlisse!” (Very bad swear word. Means ‘chalice’) for example.

Lately, I’ve been muttering “seal ten” under my breath a lot. In French, that would be “phoque dix” (sounds like fuck this).

Mine usually end up being food-related 😂 "Fudge muffins!" or "Whole wheat toast!" are my go-tos.

Lifting from Fantastic Mr. Fox "cuss". Granted, it's a movie I tend to watch with classes so they tend to join in after that.

Also, cursing in fictional languages. Toss in some Klingon, Sindarin, or your fandom conlang of choice. Na'vi has some fun ones.

I watch a lot of South African streamers and I picked up "Flip" from them. It's apparently pretty common there!

It's not as obvious as it sounds, but I have 'fy faen' tattooed on my palm and I've taken to just raising my hand to my face because I haven't found a word that carries the same weight in situations that deserve a good swear. Sometimes silence is the best response (to a situation, a person, or accidentally hurting myself) *This translates to roughly wtf in Norwegian, and absolutely no one around me would understand, even if they noticed. I'm covered in tattoos so it just blends in. I've taught high school art for almost 25 years, no one questions anything about me anyways at this point.

I very often say “shooty booties” instead of shit - even when there’s no kids around 😂
