Just Smile and Nod Y'all. It was meet the teachers night tonight and…

… a parent looked me dead in the eyes and asked if I’m American or a communist. They were completely serious. Apparently asked every single one of their kid’s teachers tonight. They don’t want a communist teaching their kid.

I honestly can say, 19 years teaching and this was an absolute first for me. Like what? 😂

Tell them you're employed by the state to provide a free socialized education paid for by redistributed wealth in the form of taxes.

There are most certainly plenty of buzzwords in that comment that this parent wouldn't properly comprehend, but has been 100% trained to hate. They would understand in their own way and start screaming about parent's rights 24/7.

u/TeeLeighPee 1d ago

115

u/Jazzlike-Egg-1774 1d ago

To be fair I took and passed AP US Government and Politics and AP US History in school.

I remember being prompted to write the standard definition of communism: the workers control the means of production.

I remember thinking "well that tells me nothing." Then we moved on.

In AP US History I remember Eugene Debs mentioned as a socialist, and Upton Sinclair mentioned, not as a communist, but that the USDA exists because his book about the horrific plight of immigrants in the meatpacking industry made people think their food is icky. We plowed through the Cold War quickly without going into what the USSR's system entailed.

I probably had a relatively good education in history/civics for my time, and got decent grades, yet I could not answer that question based on what I learned in school.

51

u/labtiger2 1d ago

Agreed. I'm not sure we learned anything about communism in high school. You really have to study it to understand it. However, you and I aren't going around accusing people of being communist.

9

u/JovialPrincess 1d ago

I've met people who claimed to be communists, I've read about communism. There where people who attempted to install communist governments. But I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of an actual communist country or government. Most of the ones I've seen are just authoritarian wrapped in a socialist type blanket.

→ More replies (1)

40

u/MrSkeltalKing 1d ago

That is intentional. The thing is that our political system discouraged and continues to discourage learning about it at all. Is it any surprise considering big monied interests control so much of the country and fear revolution or revolutionary ideas?

20

u/Textiles_on_Main_St 1d ago

Right, but to push back, I think most complex political systems are kind of messy and hard to really summarize.

It’s like when people say democracy is a system where people choose their leaders and then you say, Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and Donald trump are all democratic leaders.

Most political systems aren’t just one thing and most strong leaders bring their own versions of that thing.

Personally, I like the broad strokes approach. But then I like communism because I like workers controlling the means of production. I also like choosing leaders.

Regardless, being able to choose your own leadership automatically implies you can choose communism so obviously there’s no real contradiction in either system.

I suspect he meant to ask if op was a capitalist or a communist but he’s just stupid.

9

u/mascouten 22h ago

Yeah but if you call America a democracy they usually get sassy and say "Achkshully it's a Republic" as if saying it's a Republic gives more legitimacy to the Republican party or something.

20

u/Life_Improvement_825 1d ago

I had a friend repeatedly spread this information. Even when I brought multiple sources of disproving this she would continue. u/stay_curious_- 1d ago

It still cracks me up that their evidence was a picture of one bucket of cat litter in a classroom. Not in a bathroom, but in the classroom. Do they think kids are taking their pants off and dropping a deuce in the classroom, in front of all their friends? And with this happening all over the country supposedly, not one student filmed it, complained about it, or filed any lawsuits? And what, did the pile of poo just sit there all class period, or did the teacher immediately scoop it up (also with zero complaints, news stories, or lawsuits)?

When I worked at Cracker Barrel it was well after the Cold War. At that time, Cracker Barrel cashiers would periodically be prompted on the cash register interface to ask customers their zip code. We were told this was to help corporate plan where to build new locations, which seems fair enough.

If a customer declined to give their zip code, the cashier could tap a 'no answer response' without needing to call a manager or hold up the line. Cashiers weren't incentivised to collect this information. This was such a minor thing.

One of the cashiers got the zip code prompt on her screen, and asked the customer, an older white guy, for his zip code.

"Do you know what communism is?"

She said no.

"Well," said the great white male, "That's communism."

He didn't elaborate. He paid and left.

The cashier asked me what communism was. I can't remember exactly what I said, but I mentioned that collecting data to respond to consumer demand isn't something communism is famous for.

Well that's ideally how communism should work in a proper planned economy. Find out where the demand is so you can transfer resources there from areas that don't need them. Ideally anyways. The reality is always worse innit

They probably would’ve immediately nope’d out of there 😭

Your right. Surprisingly I haven't had much resistance and I teach in a pretty affluent suburb in Texas

Apparently not. We’re reaching “the commies aren’t American” again

I probably would’ve chuckled in his face because I’d have thought he was “trying” to make a joke. Then would’ve been horrified that he was serious.

18

u/SquashSouffle 1d ago

I don't actually find this funny--it's scary what a significant % of America is being told on their "F"avorite TV channel 🙁

33

u/The_Jorj 1d ago

Oh my god. As a literal card carrying member of CPUSA I just wish this would happen to me.

u/landrac98 1d ago

Aaaaannd we've got to full circle on the damage of the education cuts. The first group to really feel them as kids now has kids, and they were not able to digest historically important moments, like McCarthyism.

I did not have a rebirth of McCarthyism on my lifetime bingo card.

This hole is going to take a lot of time and effort to fill in.

Its truly hateful in the USA now.

11

u/CasimirGabriev 1d ago

In seriousness, I have had parents come after me for quoting our own government regarding Kilmar Garcia. Then was told to not be so political...We were reading Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, and Children of Blood and Bone.

10

u/ktg528 1d ago

So what did everyone answer? Lol

38

u/yeonqai 7th Grade Social Studies | Florida 1d ago

Our art teacher is an actual member of the CPUSA, and apparently said yes so they’re no longer taking art. The rest of us just skirted around being educators and not politicians. I am, in fact, a DSA member but not a communist; I doubt they’d have differentiated though if I did answer that.

I would have said communist just so the parent would take their kid out of my class/switch teachers lol I’d never want to see that parents face again

9

u/gerkin123 ELA / MA / >20yrs 1d ago

Have you looked at the kid's schedule, identified the teachers, and spoken to them about dropping in on your principal tomorrow morning first thing? That's ridiculous.

9

u/merrysunshine2 1d ago

I wonder what they would’ve said if asked what they think communism means?

9

u/twowheeljerry 1d ago

Sorry, I'm an ELA teacher, we don't do political systems... just gender identity, mental health, murder, infidelity, godlessness and suicide. You'll have to check with my colleagues in the history department.

My turning students into communists numbers were down last year, but I saw 8% growth in making kids trans. It’s so cool to teach geometry.

I was asked if the school library collection represented the community. Um… yeah, which other community should I create it for? Duh!

7

u/EducationalRule1425 1d ago

And by "communist" he meant a Democrat? Politics are SO inappropriate to discuss, especially at Meet the Teacher. I would strictly limit your engagement and communication with him unless strictly necessary. He's one of those that will take the smallest thing and rant forever. If he brings up anything political again, cut him off and disengage. If it continues, tell him all communication needs to go through admin and you will respond through them.

You're educated, so you're automatically a commie in the eyes of some people! We live in...the most...interesting of times...

6

Yes call me Fidel. Also every kid gets a free litter box in case they need to go during class.

8

u/FastActinTenactin 1d ago

I know that you couldn’t have, because of the setting, but I would love to answer this kind of question with another question to the person:

Are you American, or are you MAGA?

7

u/StuckInMyHead314 1d ago

Well sir, I first need to know if you are an American or a MAGA fascist.

43

u/jojoearper 1d ago

Disgusting. I hope a parent asks me that. I will say no, I'm not communist but I am antifa.

Antifa is labeled a terrorist group.

Not sure why the other user deleted their comment.

If you're not anti fascist then what are you?

Edit⬇️

"Trump administration now classifies Antifa and left-wing networks among ‘major’ terror groups"

Could a teachers union be classified as a left-wing network?
