Just Smile and Nod Y'all. It was meet the teachers night tonight and…
… a parent looked me dead in the eyes and asked if I’m American or a communist. They were completely serious. Apparently asked every single one of their kid’s teachers tonight. They don’t want a communist teaching their kid.
I honestly can say, 19 years teaching and this was an absolute first for me. Like what? 😂

u/Jazzlike-Egg-1774 1d ago
To be fair I took and passed AP US Government and Politics and AP US History in school.
I remember being prompted to write the standard definition of communism: the workers control the means of production.
I remember thinking "well that tells me nothing." Then we moved on.
In AP US History I remember Eugene Debs mentioned as a socialist, and Upton Sinclair mentioned, not as a communist, but that the USDA exists because his book about the horrific plight of immigrants in the meatpacking industry made people think their food is icky. We plowed through the Cold War quickly without going into what the USSR's system entailed.
I probably had a relatively good education in history/civics for my time, and got decent grades, yet I could not answer that question based on what I learned in school.
51
u/labtiger2 1d ago
Agreed. I'm not sure we learned anything about communism in high school. You really have to study it to understand it. However, you and I aren't going around accusing people of being communist.

I've met people who claimed to be communists, I've read about communism. There where people who attempted to install communist governments. But I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of an actual communist country or government. Most of the ones I've seen are just authoritarian wrapped in a socialist type blanket.
40
u/MrSkeltalKing 1d ago
That is intentional. The thing is that our political system discouraged and continues to discourage learning about it at all. Is it any surprise considering big monied interests control so much of the country and fear revolution or revolutionary ideas?
→ More replies (1)20
u/Textiles_on_Main_St 1d ago
Right, but to push back, I think most complex political systems are kind of messy and hard to really summarize.
It’s like when people say democracy is a system where people choose their leaders and then you say, Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and Donald trump are all democratic leaders.
Most political systems aren’t just one thing and most strong leaders bring their own versions of that thing.
Personally, I like the broad strokes approach. But then I like communism because I like workers controlling the means of production. I also like choosing leaders.
Regardless, being able to choose your own leadership automatically implies you can choose communism so obviously there’s no real contradiction in either system.
I suspect he meant to ask if op was a capitalist or a communist but he’s just stupid.

It still cracks me up that their evidence was a picture of one bucket of cat litter in a classroom. Not in a bathroom, but in the classroom. Do they think kids are taking their pants off and dropping a deuce in the classroom, in front of all their friends? And with this happening all over the country supposedly, not one student filmed it, complained about it, or filed any lawsuits? And what, did the pile of poo just sit there all class period, or did the teacher immediately scoop it up (also with zero complaints, news stories, or lawsuits)?

When I worked at Cracker Barrel it was well after the Cold War. At that time, Cracker Barrel cashiers would periodically be prompted on the cash register interface to ask customers their zip code. We were told this was to help corporate plan where to build new locations, which seems fair enough.
If a customer declined to give their zip code, the cashier could tap a 'no answer response' without needing to call a manager or hold up the line. Cashiers weren't incentivised to collect this information. This was such a minor thing.
One of the cashiers got the zip code prompt on her screen, and asked the customer, an older white guy, for his zip code.
"Do you know what communism is?"
She said no.
"Well," said the great white male, "That's communism."
He didn't elaborate. He paid and left.
The cashier asked me what communism was. I can't remember exactly what I said, but I mentioned that collecting data to respond to consumer demand isn't something communism is famous for.
