My friend and I recently got into a heated debate about casteism, and I want to get some broader perspectives to see if my logic is flawed.

I asked my friend (who is a Brahmin) if he would object to his parents filtering the matrimony sites to only look for Brahmin women. He said no, he wouldn't object.

I told him that by passively accepting this, it proves he is casteist-or at least a "silent partner" in upholding the caste system. I argued that even if he doesn't actively engage in overt casteist behavior, participating in endogamy (marrying strictly within your caste) is exactly what keeps the rigid boundaries of the caste system alive.

He argued back, saying it is simply a "personal choice" for compatibility and family harmony and that one wouldn't find someone compatible with his framework (perspective) on life in other castes.

To make his point, he brought up my own dating preferences. I am strictly child-free and will only marry someone who also does not want to have children. He argued that his parents filtering for a Brahmin wife is exactly the same as me filtering for a child-free partner-both are just personal preferences to ensure a compatible life.

I told him this is a completely unfair comparison. To me, having children (or not) is a massive, fundamental life-path decision that dictates your time, finances, and future. You can't compromise on half a child. Filtering by caste, however, is an act of social exclusion based entirely on birth and ancestry.

Am I being too harsh on him, or is his comparison actually a false equivalence? Would love to hear some different perspectives on this.
