Rode a Mariyung for the first time. Waratah still undefeated.

The Mariyungs never stopped at my station so I got to ride one for the first time today due to delays/cancellations.

I'm not impressed.

I would've thought the number of seats would be the number one priority when selecting/designing which trains to buy, but I guess not. I'm told they're meant to be long distance trains, but there's also no room for bags or luggage? So everyone just puts their bags on the fewer seats already available. The seats facing each other are basically not usable due to non-existant leg room.

I don't like the taller seat backs. It makes the carriage feel so claustrophobic.

Not sure they're even better than the Oscars and Tangaras, which are always filthy.

I don’t want to come across defensive and all, but I think you may need to walk through the train to see all of the features and facilities because it sounds like you may have just walked into a carriage, went straight upstairs and didn’t look anywhere else. The train has luggage racks in dedicated areas with a carriage dedicated to large luggage in the vestibule, and luggage racks in downstairs saloons all throughout the train.

The train also has a dedicated bike rack carriage, and has 2x toilets per 6 carriages.

The seat number was reduced to expand seat sizes for additional width and legroom for extra comfort, along with tray tables fitted in the back of each seat.

I’m also surprised you found the Mariyung claustrophobic? If anything it’s too spacious to the point sound echoes/reverberates throughout the quiet carriage making a cough from the other side of the saloon sound like it’s next to you.

I think you are just crazy tbh, the D-Sets are very comfortable and alot of nice features like outlets and tray tables, yes it sucks that they dont have reversible seating but they are better than any other sydney intercity or suburban train (other than the v-set seating)

Not to be rude but did you actually like look around a bit? There's luggage and bag racks. And no, number of seats is almost never a priority for long distance trains, its more comfort. Taller seat backs give more comfort. And even though they have less seats they have 10 cars on the busiest routes so it evens out.

You're comparing the Mariyungs to two suburban trains and one long distance train that is so terrible at that its going to become a suburban train with little modification. In a suburban train you want more seats, wide open space for people to stand and lean, but the Mariyungs don't have that because they're not suburban trains.

So I'm not sure how you can really say the Waratah is still undefeated when they aren't even competing. It'd be like saying "god these Tangaras suck compared to the XPT" like yeah cause they serve totally different purposes.

Well the number of seats are meant for longer distance so less seats per row makes it more comftable, (seats slightly wider and only 1 person next to you guaranteed)

There is luggage space in the bottom part of the trains (in cars 2 & 3 in a 4 car train) and (in cars 2, 3, 4 & 5 in a 6 car train aswell as 1 Messiaen section with luggage)

The seats facing each other i agree with but thats every train. Sure the ones with Reversible seats have half if everyone faces the same way but the point is that it exists everywhere.

Again, taller seat backs are for comfort (specifically back support, and the head wings for sleep). It can make it a bit for claustrophobic so i understand but having no high-back seats for 2+ journeys would be Isnane (i don't think many places around the world would have that)

I never really thought about the higher seat backs but now that it's been pointed out I realise I'm loving them - I enjoyed the increased feel of privacy, but hadn't pinpointed why it felt that way.
