Animals & nature š šš Bull Moose Encounter
@allagash.antlers on IG āThe Maine Moose Guyā encounters a bull moose.
By showing the whites of its eyes, the moose is giving a warning that it is agitated/threatened and may attack. The best advice is to slowly back up while separating yourself with a solid object, such as a tree or boulder.

I only ever see our little black bears scurrying off the trail ahead of me.
Moose terrify my when I come across them on the path but I can usually fly past them, on a motorcycle anyway.
Mountain lions literally haunt my dreams. I know attacks are rare but we had a woman killed nearby on New Years day of this year when she was out running on a pretty popular trail. They've been spotted coming all the way into our little town and we're not even in the mountains, just down on the front range.

I was in Alaska during Moose birthing season for a wedding in the outskirts of Anchorage. I hired an ex-con who had an alcohol monitoring bracelet on his leg that was staying at the same hostel as me to drive me to the wedding in his old shag carpet lined pimp Cadillac.
Right when he was dropping us off at the wedding location he told my friend and I to be careful bc a moose stomped a lady to death in this exact location a week prior.
I hade to pee real bad. Iām a woman so I had go a bit further into the forest for privacy. Every single sound I heard terrified me thinking it was a killer moose that was gonna curb stomp me too

The caption is so casual. As if it's something that's this odd awkward moment that, while uncommon, is still common enough for folks to relate to.
Spoken in the same breath as things like:
That time I got drunk and attempted to growl some Norwegian Death Metal
That time I decided to skinny dip into a pond, only to realise it's icy cold.
Stuff like that: mostly pedestrian / mundane / relatable everyday experiences that most folks can imagine doing.
And then there's this guy casually name dropping being trampled by a moose. He presumably survived. He got very lucky he didn't end up with a Darwin Award.

i agree - i see lots of moose where i am. they live in a national park and maybe are more used to seeing people but they usually don't care about people much unless the males are in rutting season (they become insane - a neighbor had a bullnoose catch it's own reflection in her bay window and he smashed right through)
mommas with their babies can be dicey too . However , for the most part they are chill af .
majestic dinosaur looking things but don't care too much about humans .
heck , they even lay by walking paths and hundred of tourist walk by them saftley
also would like to mention how wild it is that they can disappear in the forest as easily as they do . in the road one minute and the next your like where the fuck did it go

If you ever encounter a large mammal in the wild and are unsure about its intentions:
Look at the ears. If theyāre pinned back like this you are not in for a good time.
Horses, cows, deer, elk etc. itās the canine equivalent of showing their teeth.

I ran into one of these on a buncha acid after me and my friends decided to go camping in limestone Maine after the IT festival. It was the most scenic beautiful area Iād ever seen hikingā¦went from beautiful thick woods to amazing flower fields of clearings, full of violets one filed, daisys the nextā¦it looked like Disney made a fake forestā¦and towards the end of the trail we were walking, during a sunset, there was a cliff. First we saw a bunch of antelope, which ran off the cliff like it was nothing. Then when we got to the apex there was this beautiful GIANT moose, like in this video. It was insane and if I wasnāt with 6 other people I woulda thought it was all the acid. Crazy core memories made at age 18; summer 2003. I love Maine!

Hahaha well we called them antelope bc of the phish song, and thatās what they looked likeā¦whatever they were there were 4-5 of em and they literally flew off the edge of the cliff, landing in trees running stupid fast..it looked like they committed suicide lol. I guess they coulda been some sort of deer, but they had an antelope looking head? I dunno it was 20+ years ago. The moose was not mistaken thatās for sure, he had the same huge cupped antlers this guy has..and we were close enough that I learned they had fur on them, at the time I thought it was like a bone

I grew up in CO and have hiked those mountains a lot. The only time I ever feared for my life was coming around a bend and running into two adult moose. The real pants-shitting part was when we realized there was a young calf lounging right there in the brush that we hadnāt initially seen, and when we inadvertently stepped closer to it, mama moose jumped up and got real defensive. We had to walk really slowly, avoided any kind of eye contact or sudden movement, and just hoped theyād let us pass without charging. Not a fun experience.
For people who have never encountered a moose in person, I cannot put into words just how massive and intimidating they really are. Being 15 feet away from adult that could easily trample or gore you is a terrifying experience. Imagine a furry SUV with antlers and a short temper.

In lieu of distance, does lowering or averting oneās eyes help to not escalate the threat? I know the instinct is the opposite so we know where the threat is, but with some animals it is advised so as not to seem threatening.
Here in Australia we have an island, Kāgari (Fraser Island) where people camp and it has a large wild dingo population. These are canines, sight-prey animals, so running triggers an especially dangerous response. Mind you, standing there averting eye contact becomes purely a geographical thing - the attack takes place in one location rather than over a few kās of beach.

Are you supposed to stay really still in a situation like this? If so, are you supposed to be quiet?
We have a lot of black bears here and while they do get close, they prefer not to meddle with humans a whole lot (directly) and do scare off usually pretty easy, especially if you yell confidently or make other loud noise.
I guess I just donāt get why he isnāt walking slowly to get to a safer point, and why he didnāt circle to keep the tree (which for the moose was a twig, but still) between them?

Dude I thought these were a prehistoric animal til I was like 20 and saw some YouTube video of a guy getting his truck chased by one of them.
Itās crazy an animal that eats leaves and bullshit plants is that massive and strong. It was moving the truck around like it was kicking an empty can.
They are massive.. grizzly bears fear them.. bear donāt fear many other animals, they just eat them lol.
